  • UPDATE: The car met it's end when it hit a Kangaroo - so there will be no follow up video
Engine flush - good or bad?
In this video we look at engine oil flushes and why they are unnecessary with today's modern cars. Throughout the entire process we'll take a listen to the sound the engine is making, along with taking samples through a coffee filter to catch any contaminates.

Thin oil is all the rave. So is ring failure. As my engines age, I increase viscosity. No smoke or oil usage with 3000 mile changes. Syn oil is very clean. Gas cleaner keeps gas blowby to a minimum. No prob unless 0w20 oil is used. 5w30 is my minimum now! 10w40 in my older v8 and generators in summer. 10w30 winter small engines syn blend works fine. I go 50/50 syn, syn blend these days in older gens that state conv oil only. Yes they are old, like 4000 hours! Lol. Works for me with 100 hour oil changes max!

I bought a brand new Dodge Dakota and I received coupons for 12 oil changes. First time I hit 3000 miles, I went to the dealership to get my oil changed. The asshole mechanic recommended an engine oil flush with a vehicle with barely 3K miles. The cost was $800. I said no. He kept pushing it. He wouldn't take no for an answer. I just said "give me my keys" and left. I gave away the truck after over 200K miles. I assumed that the mechanic didn't want to honor the free oil change. That dealership went out of business.

Like your video. I have a hybrid and I disagree that you do not need to flush if you do regular oil changes. I use 10000 mile semisynthetic oil and premium filter, change every 3000 and it still burns oil and creates lot of sludge. Hybrid toyota oil scraper piston rings block very easily and oil sludge begins. Other modern toyota engines have that problem too, like RAV4.
Your engine should work more efficiently now.

"premium oil filter" but semisintetic oil... Dude, learn the basics, you are doing it wrong.... And it burns oil because your shity oil cant handdle the high temperatures and the TBN scks... It creates lots of sludge because it doesnt have any detergents or are minimum. And because you don´t flush the engine, when you put a new oil inmediatly contaminates itself.... Go to the mechanic school and learn the basics please.

Not a good idea. Putting in a flush can loosen up pieces of solid material. If you leave in the old filter, the material can bypass the filter and block up an oil passage. That's why I say, unless you have an extremely severe case, just accelerate the oil change interval. It ran before you flushed it. Right?

I have an 04 Honda Civic w/135k miles and underneath its valve covers it looks almost brand new. Lot of engines are neglected and people assume gold is good, gold is OK on a high mileage engine, not great but OK and not a deal breaker. Nice thing about ATF is that it cleans @ a slowe rate. Unlike engine flushes; which do a great job at cleaning but they too strong. You will clean out too much gunk and deposits too soon. You run the risk of clogging up screen/filter. The last thing you want is oil not getting to where it needs to go because something clogged it.
I'll leave a link how to clean/flush with all ATF.

It's not a real science on this scenario, older ,high mileage engines tend to be owned by people with limited finances, you recommend this and it doesn't work the customer will be wondering why you spent 'their money on parts and labour ,interaction with the customer is the most important way to do it I wouldn't do this with a new customer, only customers I've dealt with for many years, saying so,some cars come back to me after 40.000 kms, having been looked after by another mechanic, it's like playing with dice to mate some people happy, still learning after 44 years.

I disagree with you in regards to your point about the the flushing product
The 10 minutes is actually for those who use it regularly but for first time you should have left it for 30 minutes specially if the car milage is high like the one you applied your testing on it

...that engine might have looked clean to you because there's no obvious sludge. But what you are looking at is varnish. The valve train including the springs, is simply coated with the stuff that was caused by oil breakdown when it went too long without a change. It's not as bad as sludge, but it is a sign of infrequent changes, the true cause of engine damage in this engine, if any. Since this video lacks a satisfactory ending we may never know.

It's a great idea and I have kept an engine alive with flushing. Also using transmission fluid in the oil before I change it helps when the engine is burning oil. The rings are dirty. Thus these treatment work. Oh BTW way beyond 230K miles and it is still running! Oil consumption has been under control the oil was Not Syn but Regular motor oil changed every 3,333 miles. Totally disagree
Flush when needed. It is bath for the engine. Or just quit taking baths...... LOL

the reason he did not remove the crank case after the flush is it is like ERG cleaners they dont work or if they do there is no differance.
the safest way is to do a oil and filter change run in for about 20 miles at 3000 -3500 rpm let it cool to about 40c do oil and filter again that will do the same job.
i do this 3 times i use cheap oil and filter for this but on the last i use good oil and filter at least you will not blow a seal doing this and it will if you are doing on a diesil force regen of your DPF

Add 250 ml of Oil Flush to 4 liters of old engine oil. Let the engine run for 60 minutes at 1500 rpm. Periodically increase the speed to 3500 rpm. Drain the old oil, fill in the new oil and replace the oil filter.
