This movie did parody right. It's more than just making jokes about something, you have to understand what you're doing and why. And this movie nailed it.
Yep, this one and the first couple movies in the Scary Movie franchise understood the concept of taking a bunch of sources of inspiration and blending them up into something new (like many parody / satire movies over the previous few decades had done). Granted, they had their fair share of moments that were just thrown in as quick gags on the side. But they used something as a core story for everything else to be built around. And then they were followed up by a trend of "Movie Movies" which often failed to do much more than loosely stitch together a bunch of separate skits (and sometimes some of the skits wouldn't even be in the same theme that they'd specified in the title).

Another fun fact, according to the director's commentary in the blu ray, they had to reshoot the "Cruel Intentions" scene between Chris Evans and Mia multiple times. The reason was that every time she sat on him and he kept getting erect to the point that it was noticeable. The director would stop the scene, and Chris would leave the room to handle it. Then, they'd try to reshoot the scene only for it to get back up. The cast laughed at how fast his recovery time was.

This didn't get a lot of attention upon its release, if I recall correctly. Owned a copy on VHS back in the day. And just so you know, yes; the father is played by Randy Quaid who was Russell Case in Independence Day like you said. This was one of the last movies I saw him in, aside from his small role in Brokeback Mountain. He has since went insane, last I heard. Read a story how he sold an owned home, then was arrested for trespassing with his wife for still occupying the residence after the sale finalized. Both reportedly trashed a few hotel rooms they stayed in before seeking asylum in Canada after claiming Heath Ledger and David Carradine were murdered. Although I was never a major fan of his work, his chilling acting in Hard Rain really stuck out to me. He remains an Oscar nominee for Supporting Acting in The Last Detail. His brother Dennis Quaid has completely severed ties, last I heard. If Randy didn't go off the deep end and did more roles akin to Hard Rain, I definitely feel he could've been a powerhouse in Hollywood. Yet alas...
I remember hearing about Quaid too. Didn't watch too many American films growing up, so I only knew him from the Disney movie Home on the Range lmao. His story is so bizarre. Last I remember he was living in a car with his wife (gf?) and was making the most bizarre rants via video.
@@hardlyliving Absolute perfect example of a fall from grace celebrity. It's as if Randy became equally deranged to the many characters he portrayed. And a couple of the tiny jokes parodied Risky Business and Lucas. 80s movies that are pretty obscure at this point (dang I’m old…)
@@BabySis_xoxo As we’ll as Rudy (made original comment before finishing video 😁) And I loved Lucas, because what is normal?
10 things I hate about you.
How could they have parodied mean girls when it came out AFTER this movie was released?
They couldn't have referenced Mean Girls. It came out 2 1/2 years after this movie.
I love the background adlibs!! Especially the party scene with the water 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mellow you killed me when you had your eyes closed because I knew what was coming I knew as soon as you started hearing the noises you weren't going to be in that blissful happy place anymore and I was right 🤣🤣🤣
This is a movie that . You really should have easily seen about 20 other teen movies to get the specific references.. all of John Hughes 80s out put, Varsity Blues, American Beauty, American Pie, She's All That, Cruel Intentions, Never Been Kissed, Ten Things I Hate About You, Bring It On, Rudy, Can't Hardly Wait. And I'm sure I still missed a good dozen more. Lol
One of my favorite comedies of all time 🤣🤣🤣 I remember when Captain American came out and I was like "Jake Wiler is Captain America!!!" Haha
10 Things I Hate About You was a movie referenced a lot in this movie. I love this movie. It is hilarious and thank you for reacting to it. It is a rarer one to see. :D
You should spend a month reacting to some of the movies this parodied.
"She's All That", "10 Things I Hate About You", "Can't Hardly Wait" and "American Pie" are the the main ones if I remember correctly.
American Beauty was one of them too
@@myar3380 yeah.... but not plot wise. Just like the Breakfast Club scene, and the two Bring It On scenes
@@christophermcbride2522 ohhhh I see what you mean
I thought there was a mean girl reference with the mean girls in pink trio
@@Melanie-jy2nw this movie came out in 2001. "Mean Girls" was 2004. I never saw "Mean Girls". I was 14 at that time.
Fun fact: the actress playing the foreign nudist played the yellow ranger in Lost Galaxy. If I had a nickel for every former yellow ranger that has done nudity, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but weird that it has happened twice.
Lol who was the other???? 😂😂
@@_Aqua_Kay Emma Lahana from Dino Thunder.
The scene with the “beautiful” bag with that weird guy filming them in the beginning is a parody of American Beauty. Amazing film! I recommend you to watch it!!
Agreed shame Kevin Spacey tainted everything he was a part of.
Loved this! The whole dynamic between Jake and his sister (and the bet kinda) is from Cruel intentions with Reese Witherspoon .
Some of the movies they spoofed were: Never Been Kissed, Bring It On, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions, American Beauty, Can't Hardly Wait, Pretty In Pink, Grease
She’s All That too
Varsity blues. They did the whip cream bit first
@@seanmurphy6136 And Reggie Ray was played by the same actor from Varsity Blues.
American pie too don't forget that
This didn't get a lot of attention upon its release, if I recall correctly.
Aside from NATM and ID, the Christmas Vacation films come to mind as well. I must reiterate that his acting in Hard Rain was pretty much flawless, however.
Randy Quaid is awesome--then, now, and forever.
@@porflepopnecker4376 He's ranting nonsense on Twitter like an absolute loon. And I'm not going to entertain the idea of giving such a deranged freak any such attention.
He also did a very good, nuanced and moving performance in a Rom Com called By Bye Love, with Paul Reiser
Fun fact, the foreign exchange student was a Power Ranger just two years before she did this movie.
Another power rangers fun fact: Janey's actress, chyler leigh (who's best known for the cbs/cw supergirl show) has a brother who also played a power ranger 3 years prior to the film.)
the fact that they got chris evans to do this ridiculous movie is fucking hilarious
I mean he wasn't the star he is now when this movie came out. It's one of his first roles lol.
Before becoming Captain America, Chris Evans starred in this, the first two Fantastic Four movies, Street Kings and The Losers. The two big cameos are Melissa Joan Hart and Molly Ringwald
*The Captain America origins story*
Yup he fell in love with Lexi Grey
The cast in this movie, when you look at it now, was incredible!
So if you see this movie more than once, you start pausing at scenes like 3:33 and reading ("Hamsters or Gerbils: Which is Right For You?"), and really any other scene where you can find something in the background. Then you realize how brilliant this movie actually is. There are so many great jokes that go unnoticed, it makes this movie that much more rewatchable
This was the first rated R movie I saw. Lol I was 11. Vhs from Blockbuster. My dad didn't care enough to check what it was rated before we got it. Thankfully I watched it before my mom knew that I had it. 😂good times
I can't take Chris Evans seriously as Captain America because of this movie.
I've always loved this movie and no clue why my mom ever let me watch this when I was younger If she had known what went on in this movie there's no way in hell haha. So many great references and cameos. In my opinion it's one of the best parody movies out there. Raunchy, dumb, but extremely fun.
Saw this in theaters with my wife on our very first date. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm a huge fan of compilation spoof movies. I always wished I had friends who shared my passion, and we could make a party game out of recognizing which movies/references they cover, and why the various cast are otherwise famous. 💜🤣
Same...i feel alone...ha ha
Spoof movies released these days get review bombed by the medias and hate flooded, mob bullied to death on social medias by superhero fanboys and the like (basically the same idiots that give avengers and spiderman spiderverse a higher score than Godfather 2 on imdb) which cause them to tank at the box office, and movie studios to move away from producing them. These fanboys want to wipe these movies from existence and brainwash everyone to think marvel dad jokes is the only "humor" we need, and that marvel cringe jokes is actually an evolution of comedy into a more mature state
The old guy who plays the principal is George Wyner, who also played Colonel Sandurz in Spaceballs.
I was 30 (Gen-X) when this came out and knew the movies it spoofed and the songs. Im thrilled that Millennials and Gen-Z love it too! It's a classic!
I put this right up there with Airplane, Scary Movie, and Blazing Saddles as one of the best parody movies.
I have to respectfully disagree.
Bag Boy is from American Beauty. The stalker if from Pretty in Pink, The cheerleaders are from Bring It On and the main guys sister is parodying Cruel Intentions. All really good movies.
I was a pre teen when these type of movies came out. My humor was definitely affected. Disaster Movie was my favorite
The Bring It On scene will always make me laugh.
This movie is so hilarious, it's my favorite parody movie that's for sure. 😂🧡 Your reaction is priceless! 😂🧡
Chris evans arguing how he'll get the girl should've just said " i'm captain america. Enough said".
Me: hell, yeah you are!!!
"Cellular" is another younger Chris Evans movie that's worth watching, really enjoyable. Highly recommend.
I friggin loved this movie back in the day.
I can't even count how many times I've seen it.
Every time my friends were over for beers and weed, I'd throw it on.
this movie was just UNHINGED from beginning to end... yet i knew every movie they were taking from.... it is impressive how they got all of that cohesively in a movie
7:52 - It's a reference of the film American Beauty.
11:41 - It's a reference of the character Duckie Dale from Pretty in Pink.
18:33 - It's a reference to the film 10 Things I Hate About You.
Ed Lauter's parody of Jon Voight in Varsity Blues will always be one of the best parts of this movie. RIP to The Coach.
Man, me and my siblings quote this movie all the time XD
And I appreciate it so much more these days.
I'm not gonna say it's a FANTASTIC parody movie, but it has its charm, for me anyway.
Such an underrated movie, so happy to see someone react to it. Chris Evans is a good captain America, but this role… chef’s kiss
one of my favorite parody movie and honestly i think i was like 12 when i saw it 😩 it’s just too epic for me
This and Superhero Movie are the best spoofs! Reminds me of all the older Leslie Nielsen movies from back in the day ❤
I dunno why but I must congratulate you Mellverse for not saying "shit, damn or that's whack" when the girl fell through the ceiling and the toilet sprayed literal shit everywhere 🤣 🤮 I know that's fucked up
A lot of people think Captain America when they see Chris Evans. I always see him as Jake, with that smirk looking at himself.
It is sad to know that this generation has missed seeing gems like: Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Varsity Blues, American Beauty, Cruel Intentions, Never Been Kissed, Risky Business, Grease... Among many other works of art from youth films .
Take the time and watch all those movies, I'm sure you'll love a lot of them.
Sixteen candles sucks

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FAMILY?!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!! LOOOOOOVE this movie!!!! Wish more reactors would watch this, it's so crazy hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The actor playing the football player that keeps getting the concussions is basically playing the same character he played in Varsity Blues which is the movie that inspired the football scenes.
This movie is a classic, it parody's so many films:
10 Things i Hate About You
Cruel Intentions
She's All That
Varsity Blues
16 Candles
The Breakfast Club
American Pie
Never Been Kissed
Can't Hardly Wait
Bring it On
And im sure there is more i missed lol
You laughing made me laugh harder! You should see “She’s all that” lol
that movie was a hidden treasure. so many great actors and hot women. More movie references than maybe any satire movie and Good charlotte as the prom band. Everything in this movie hit the bell man.
Movies refference in this movie:
10 things I hate about you.
Never been kissed.
Can hardly wait.
Breakfast club.
Cruel intentions.
American Pie.
Mean Girls.
American Beauty.
Rudy (I guess).
Bring it on!
Pretty in pink.
She's all that.
Watching Mel try to make his final statements id hilarious 😂. He's clearly sweating and having a hard time opening his mouth. Go back a watch it. 😅
7:55 that's a parody of American Beauty, which came out in 2000 and it's one I highly recommend seeing, even though parts of it with Kevin Spacey are super uncomfortable to watch now.
Chris Evans first movie. Wild to think how far he's come since this
There are so many movies referenced in this one lol. And so many guest cameos. Good Charlotte playing the prom, Mr.T, Molly Ringwald, the dad from Ferris Beuller and so many more
Even among the main characters. I love that the brother from Bring It On plays the brother in this too.
Yea but I never understood why he didn't play his dad in this one,it just didn't make sense to have him in it and not play his dad, what a waste!!!
"He just told her the whole sequel"
🤣
This movie is such a guilty pleasure for me 2000s nostalgic and to be silly 🥰
One of the funniest movies ever made.
I still laugh at it like the first time in 2001 lol.
Much love from Brazil!
The floating bag and the weirdo with the camera is referencing American Beauty with Kevin Spacey.
I was 6 when this came out and my mom would let me and my brother watch these kind of movies/shows but NOT American Pie. 🤦♀️ I secretly watched it anyway. 😆
I remember watching this movie for the first time back in 2015 at age 14 and didn't get any joke yet. Now it's just twice as hilarious 😂😂
The move they are parodying at 07:50 is called "American Beauty", and I would recommend it too. Good react choice.
The bag was from American beauty, the old reporter was never been kissed, the rest were She’s All That, Can’t Hardly Wait, 10 Things I Hate About You, Varsity Blues, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, American Pie, Bring It On, The Breakfast Club, Cruel Intentions, Jerry Maguire, Risky Business, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Lucas or rudy, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, waiting or road trip, a team, Grease, Sixteen Candles & The Karate Kid,
This is 100% the best spoof movie they made outside of the Scary Movie series.
yep it's great, AND it's filled with super hot women.
The movie they are parodying is "American Beauty" with Wes and his Bag.
The kid with the hat who loves and stalks Janie is from "Pretty In Pink".....Duckie is his name.
Seeing this movie and "Fired Up" makes me always so sad Eric Christian Olsen hasn't done many comedies. Guy has insane timing and delivery.
He did the dumb and dumber prequel and he did a great job,he is perfect as a young Jim Carrey, the guy nailed it
And he does a lot of comedy on NCIS LA and does a great job on their
I love all the gestures she makes and the expressions on her face during the opening scene. For that alone I'm surprised she hasn't been commissioned for more successful comedies.
Holy shit this was the funniest reaction you’ve ever done.
21:10 Holy Cow thats the actor who played Chuck/God from supernatural
Most people know Chris Evans as Captain America. I know him as this dude...
Same lol
This was THE movie that made me fantasize about moving to America one day when I was like 10. The vibrant lifestyle was something I really craved
This is the hardest I’ve laughed at a reaction video in a while. Thank you for this one 😂😂
