(Edited for mistake - not sure how I got Jeremy instead of James Earl Jones lmao) James Earl Jones had the best voice casting for a father& king lion, but James Woods is the best villain casting in all of Disney history (in my opinion!)
My favourite detail is that even though Hercules is trying to find where he came from, he never forgets the parents that raised him! Not only did he set them up for life during the Zero to Hero sequence, the cape he wears is the one his mortal mother gave him for his journey!
Also when the movie ends they're the first ones who reach him and introduces Meg to them. In a time where all Disney heroes were orphans, Hercules had not two but four loving parents! Idc if the movie is not mythologically accurate, I just love how wholesome the characters are~
It's also a really nice touch for his character too. Family is everything to him. He loves his adopted parents, but he loves his biological father too after meeting him. His entire goal isn't to be glorified, it's to find his way home. And having that, even in the background, shows how important family is to him. He stayed in touch and used a lot of his earnings to give them everything they probably dreamed of, because the money isn't what mattered to him. He says it later when he's upset how it's all just signs of how great he is, but the only thing that mattered to him was reuniting with his family even if it means becoming a god.
The biggest lie Disney has ever told: Zeus is a caring father and faithful husband and Hera is a kind mother and wife. Also, we desperately need more villains like Hades.

Honestly, even as someone obsessed with Greek Mythology, I love this movie. I like the silly references to the mythos you can find in this movie and the cartoon series. And the song "I won't say I'm in love" is one of my all time favorite Disney songs.
The way Rip torn (Zeus) delivers the line “my boy, my little Hercules” is so powerful i can hear the fathers love in it. And that is something really special and talented to be able to deliver in a line.
I think Hercules wearing Scar was a reference to the myth of the Nemean Lion but more for the animator for Hercules Andreas Deja, who also animated Scar, Jafar in Aladdin, Lilo in lilo and stitch, and Gaston in Beauty and the Beast
The Muses were all stars in their own right when they were cast: - Lilias White (Calliope, the eldest Muse who possessed a great voice and was Goddess of Epic poetry and Eloquence...the tallest one with her hair up) - Tony Award-winning actress-singer in musicals like The Life (which won her the Tony), Dreamgirls, Hadestown, Cats, and Chicago. - LaChanze (Terpsichore, the Goddess of Choral Song and Dancing, in crop top and mini skirt) - won the Tony for Best Actress as Celie in The Color Purple, and did shows like the original cast of Once On This Island (as Ti Moune), Dreamgirls, The Wiz, and Ragtime. - Roz Ryan (Thalia, The Goddess of Comedy and Bucolic Poetry...the funny one) - mainly a stage actress with voice-over work in cartoons. - Vaneese Y. Thomas (Clio, the Goddess of History) - An R&B singer with several albums to her name, she also did voice work for the animated film Anastasia. - Cheryl Freeman (Melpomene, the Goddess of Tragedy...who kind of has the long Beyonce hair) -Another stage actress, but best known for her role in the original 1990s Broadway production of 'The Who's Tommy' as The Acid Queen (a role played by the late Tina Turner in the 1970s film version by director Ken Russell, which also starred members of The Who...Roger Daltry, Pete Townsend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon.). There are 9 muses in all...this film only used 5 of them, as the other Muses were more geared toward other arts than drama, music, dance, and song.
And they did some reference filming of all of them to use for the animation! They actually dressed up as the Muses and were filmed doing some choreography and their personality/idiosyncratic movements while singing, so they had actual personality as their animated selves. So they contributed more than people think they did! :)
Danny devito is definitely singing. And the muses they actually had the women perform so they could accurately animate their movements as well as their clothing. “I won’t say I’m in love” is my favorite song. And I have to say Hades is the best part of the movie. James Woods is so good. And you can tell he loves the role so much. To the point he came back for any iteration Hades was used for. He’s such a used car salesman douche. Also also, love that they really had us believing that Zeus and Hera were good and loving parents, and Hades was the bad guy when it was the POLAR OPPOSITE. 😂 Hera literally ruined Hercules life in the mythology. And Zeus literally fucked anything and had mad illegitimate children. Hercules being one of them. Hera isn’t even his mom 😂😂 While Hades was a devoted husband and really stayed out of the shit. And just did his job in the underworld which was just monstrous amounts of paperwork. The most he did wrong was kidnap his life, but they ended up actually being a legitimately happy marriage compared to Zeus and Hera.
Granted, Hera's got reason to be frustrated considering how promiscuous Zeus is and she's meant to be the Goddess of Marriage (if i remember correctly). SO she's in a rotten position, which while it doesn't excuse her lashing out to children, is deserving of *some* sympathy. But when you've got something colossal like Typhon consisting of two snake tails for legs, hundreds of firebreathing beast heads, wings so wide that the shadows they cast make it night, and a beard/mane of even more firebreathing snakes, and also the father of most monsters in Greek myth and biggest threat to the entire pantheon just by himself, and THAT'S THE THING WITH A SOLID MARRIAGE... the idea of divinities starts to lose its lustre. Reject Olympus, become monster.

James Woods had so much fun playing Hades he had a standing offer for decades to Disney to voice the role for any adaptations at scale (i.e. the minimum he can be paid as a SAG member). He voices Hades for the tv show and even some random episodes of House of Mouse.😊
The fact that he was a huge name, but continued reprising his role for the much lower-budget Hercules TV show and bit parts in other Disney tie-ins speaks to how much he loved the character. And he’s basically responsible for the version of Hades we ended up with; he was not written like that in the original script.

I'm glad they made it that Hercules stays with Meg and choose to stay on earth Megs and Hercules love is literally the definition of true love. Ok, I ALWAYS hate when characters don't explain things. However, Zeus not explaining to hercules what a hero is is one of the few times that it makes sense. You can't just tell someone "Saving people just because you have to isn't what a hero does, Save them because you WANT to" because telling someone to want something just isnt how it works. You can't just tell someone to care about something and that just means they magically will. James Woods loved playing this character. The role of Hades wasn’t supposed to be this way. He was supposed to be slow and menacing before Woods impressed the crew with his quick responses. Woods even offered to refund his salary and do the film for free when they were going to be over budget. He also said he’d reprise the role whenever he was needed. The scene when he ate the worms Woods ate watermelon to get the slurping sound.
I agree with the editor that Michael Bolton's version was the best version of 'Go the Distance'. That man put his whole back and chest into singing that song. Gives me chills to this day.
Me too, man. in fact, the Song Go the Distance and the quote from this movie was also similar: *Go the Distance (Hercules) - Going the Distance (Rocky)* *"For a True Hero is never measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart/But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part, for a hero's strength is measured by his heart" (Hercules) - Back on the beat, back to the start, trust in your heart, That's the measure of a Man." (Rocky)*
Fun Fact: When this Disney film made a premiere in Greece (the birth place of Greek Mythology) it was met with bad reaction, because the people didn't like how the film was more of a comedic, loving, coming of age story instead of the dramatic, epic, and tragic story they knew for thousands of years.
There actually was a story of Twisted Tales variety where Meg has to prove herself worthy of Hercules to become a god and has to help the man who abandoned her.
This film and Clash of the Titans got me into greek mythology as a kid! If u watch Clash of the Titans make sure u watch the original from the 80s. Its a lot of fun! The effects from the late great Ray Harryhausen are amazing! And it has one of the most tense scenes in film history...Medusa!
14:42 fun fact in the german dub she says „ohh how adorable two skunks on their way to Disneyland“ which is so much better 😂😂 how did they not have that line in the original, they also had a line where Hades called Meg his „chicken mcnugget (meg. nugget)“ which is way better than the original or during Hercules' and Meg's first meet she deadass calls it a climax-perfection😂
Fun fact, the flowery-looking pink lady with blonde hair is Persephone. Hades's wife- Clash Of The Titans and Wrath Of The Titans are VERY good movies. Definitely recommend them. It's funny, in the actual mythology, regular people weren't scared of Heracles at all. He protected them. Also, Hades was considered one of the nicer and fairer of the deities.
"Go to distance" is like third best song after "Zero to Hero" and "I won't say I'm in love". Also I love this movie for Hades and Meg are the best and sassiest characters ever.
This movie is almost all my guy friends favorite from Disney 😂 They really enjoyed that Hercules had that drive to succeed and he made it HAPPEN. They were really inspired by that!
Hercules probably has the biggest opening banger since The Lion King. I think my biggest memory from when this came out is how big a deal everyone made about Paul Schafer being in it and being himself.
2:13 Speaking of Hercules and milk... That's where the terms Milky Way and Galaxy come into play. Galaxy comes from the Greek "Galaxias" meaning milky way. It comes from a story about when Hera tried to breastfeed Heracles... and the little bastard bit down. Hard. So hard that she sprayed milk everywhere in the sky, and that is how the ancient Greeks explained what the Milky Way was, and why it has those names. Also the words lactose and galactose share similar milky etymologies.
Another Disney Classic i grew up loving as a Kid ^^ i even had a Spanish Version of the movie on VHS with the English one. While i didn't understand spanish but i did love "I won't say i'm in love" Spanish ver. Anywho, Hades was not just a Great Villain that we need more but Him along with Phil were my Favorites.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time, so it was a pleasure watching you get the nostalgia I watch this movie too often to get nostalgic haha
One of the many great classics. Other good unique ones are "road to eldoado", "quest to chamelot" and "swan". Plus the other classics like cinderella, snow white, shrek, sleeping beauty, the rescuers and there's another one but can't remember the name (cover is a cartoon mouse I think with a red outfit on. Has a long name). Oh and DUMBO, aristocrats, princess & the frog, mulan, one about a black horse, all dogs go to heaven, over hedge, anastasia and many more lol. Xx
19:06 Fun fact: they incorporated elements of Superman’s story in this: From zero to hero, “Pa & Ma Kent” adopting him, him moving to the big city, his whole “sweetheart” persona, Lois Lane x Clark’s dynamic with Herc x Meg, meeting his biological father Joe-El (Zeus) in the fortress of Solitude, him giving up his powers, his little hair curl… As a Greek mythology & DC fan, this makes me happy. It’s funny that Hades is always portrayed as the “villain” in media when in Greek Mythology, he’s more of an introvert that likes to stay at home in the Underworld minding his own business and being a loyal husband to his wife Persephone. Zeus on the other hand… Also yes, watch Clash of Titans!
Yes Go the distance from the movie is iconic and phenomenal but I also love the Michael Bolton version more (not that its better but personally its got some extra oomph to it)
i love this movie so much! every song is just a hit and i just love how it's not that accurate but they do play a whole lot on their references. very good pacing on the development on their characters, really good moral lesson, and hades is just hella fun. the songs and hades are probably my favorite things in this movie.
I was about 12 when I saw this movie, and I had never really heard gospel before. The Muses' songs awoke something in me that changed my life, and even now I still get so emotional when I hear those songs. I've heard a lot of people complain about the plot and the jokes/references, but it will always be one of my favorite Disney movies because of how profoundly the music affected me.

This is one of my favorites. I like every song with "I Can't Go the Distance" and "Won't Say I'm in Love" as two of my all-time faves. 100% of the time, if I hear the word jeepers... "Jeepers, mister; you're really strong!" Pops in my head.
James Woods kills it in this movie. Only other voice actor that comes as close as Robin Williams in Aladdin to stealing the entire show And "Zero to Hero" is the best song in the movie
I remember seeing this film in the theatres with my younger brother - I was 7, he was 4 - and that scene of Pain and Panic falling down the stairs at the beginning made him laugh so hard he actually fell/rolled into the aisle 😂
If this was BillyBinges he would've been like labrugeeus, SPELLING BEE TIME! Then went on to spell, lugubrious, incorrectly & then say stay in school 😂 Awesome reaction Mello. Also we need those Karate Kid reactions too. All of them including Jaden Smith.

Hercules is one of my favorite Disney movies. A lot of people hate on it, for whatever reason, but I love it. This and Tarzan. The soundtracks alone….omg. Speaking of Tarzan, you should react.
Truly one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Had an old TV with a built-in VCR that would rewind and play again. Probably subconsciously have this and many other classic Disney memorized lol
The live-action Hercules movie actually was announced by Disney, reportedly aiming to be the Z-gen's version of social commentary like the cartoon was to the '90s generation. Although with the current writers' strike going on, there is no telling on when it will be complete.
New favorite Mell quote... "I mean, I didn't wanna have your back get broken that way though." haaahahahahahahaha (deep inward breath) hahahahahaha! Kids asked why you laughing so hard Dad? (cough cough) Ummm erm I.. (ahem, clears throat) I thought of something that happened earlier, now shush and watch the rest.
The soundtrack is by far my favorite part of this movie. I had to pause to go watch the entirety of One Last Hope because that one song has always been so inspirational to me. Easily one of the most underrated Disney classics (but what else would you expect from those responsible for turning Treasure Island into a sci-fi cult hit?)
When Hades says "Relax, it's only halftime" it is right when the movie is halfway through.

Woods even offered to refund his salary and do the film for free when they were going to be over budget. He also said he’d reprise the role whenever he was needed. The scene when he ate the worms Woods ate watermelon to get the slurping sound.
I haven't seen this movie in so long. I forgot how amazing it was. So nostalgic, made me so emotional.
This is definitely a classic! I definitely had the Muses plate growing up! But seriously Zeus is for the streets and Hera is his sister 😅
I agree with the editor that Michael Bolton's version was the best version of 'Go the Distance'. That man put his whole back and chest into singing that song. Gives me chills to this day.
If he had to have a grand finale to his Hair phase, this was it.
Me too, man. in fact, the Song Go the Distance and the quote from this movie was also similar:
*Go the Distance (Hercules) - Going the Distance (Rocky)*
*"For a True Hero is never measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart/But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part, for a hero's strength is measured by his heart" (Hercules) - Back on the beat, back to the start, trust in your heart, That's the measure of a Man." (Rocky)*
When I heard the muses, I immediately thought of the Weather Girls (it's raining men)
Fun Fact: When this Disney film made a premiere in Greece (the birth place of Greek Mythology) it was met with bad reaction, because the people didn't like how the film was more of a comedic, loving, coming of age story instead of the dramatic, epic, and tragic story they knew for thousands of years.
My boy 💪🏽 lol
You didn’t expect to go to church watching this movie 🤣🙏🏼
Soundtrack is unbeatable 🔥
I love your child-like soul that takes us all on this nostalgic ride. Great channel!
I appreciate how the Zeus statue came to life and spoke, because that's how the Greeks really viewed their colossal idols and temples.
Disney hired the art designer from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to design the titans. Yeah, The Wall has animated segments.
Hercules didn't become a god, he restored the godhood he was born with. So no, Meg couldn't also become a god and live on Olympus with him.
Eeeyy!! It's Shady
"She gotta stop hogging that eye."
😂😂
Mellow: What is your favorite part of this movie?
Me: Meg-
Bless my soul
Mell was on a roll
Reactor of the week in every youtube tracking poll
14:42 fun fact in the german dub she says „ohh how adorable two skunks on their way to Disneyland“ which is so much better 😂😂 how did they not have that line in the original, they also had a line where Hades called Meg his „chicken mcnugget (meg. nugget)“ which is way better than the original or during Hercules' and Meg's first meet she deadass calls it a climax-perfection😂
Fun fact, the flowery-looking pink lady with blonde hair is Persephone. Hades's wife-
Clash Of The Titans and Wrath Of The Titans are VERY good movies.
It’s about time. What are thoseeeeee?!
As a little kid the keep your goo goo eyes part did it for me on repeat 😂pre internet
Hercules probably has the biggest opening banger since The Lion King. I think my biggest memory from when this came out is how big a deal everyone made about Paul Schafer being in it and being himself.
I love the play on words they engage in here with having the "Gospel of Hercules" sang in gospel style
Alright Mell I see you lol kicking up my childhood nostalgia bringing up the masterpiece collection clip ❤
I loved that jingle.
Gospel music and Greek mythology combined is a great combination. It'll be interesting seeing who they get for the Muses for the live action.
19:23 Aww, he even sent money to his foster family. That’s sweet of him.
Esmeralda, Meg, and Jane awakened a lot of things in me when I first watched their respective Disney movies films.
MHMMMM ;)
and Shego yeah?
@@salliejones6002 yeah I suppose Shego. I wasn’t a big Disney Channel kid, I was mostly into Disney Animation films and Pixar.
Dont forget Kida
This is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time, so it was a pleasure watching you get the nostalgia
I watch this movie too often to get nostalgic haha
One of the many great classics. Other good unique ones are "road to eldoado", "quest to chamelot" and "swan". Plus the other classics like cinderella, snow white, shrek, sleeping beauty, the rescuers and there's another one but can't remember the name (cover is a cartoon mouse I think with a red outfit on. Has a long name). Oh and DUMBO, aristocrats, princess & the frog, mulan, one about a black horse, all dogs go to heaven, over hedge, anastasia and many more lol. Xx
Good news, he has reacts for Princess and the Frog, Shrek 1 & 2.
The Production Designer of this was the legend, Gerald Scarfe, who is probably most well known for doing the artwork for Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Fun fact Hades was going to be a more serious villain but his voice actor changed it to more of a snake oil salesman kinda vibe
19:06 Fun fact: they incorporated elements of Superman’s story in this:
From zero to hero, “Pa & Ma Kent” adopting him, him moving to the big city, his whole “sweetheart” persona, Lois Lane x Clark’s dynamic with Herc x Meg, meeting his biological father Joe-El (Zeus) in the fortress of Solitude, him giving up his powers, his little hair curl…
As a Greek mythology & DC fan, this makes me happy.
It’s funny that Hades is always portrayed as the “villain” in media when in Greek Mythology, he’s more of an introvert that likes to stay at home in the Underworld minding his own business and being a loyal husband to his wife Persephone. Zeus on the other hand…
Also yes, watch Clash of Titans!
What looked like Scar was actually the Nemean Lion Hercules defeated as one of his 12 labors. Guess they made it look like Scar as some easter egg.
Just wanted to say how much I like your channel and your content. You make me laugh so much 😂 ❤
Yes Go the distance from the movie is iconic and phenomenal but I also love the Michael Bolton version more (not that its better but personally its got some extra oomph to it)
i love this movie so much! every song is just a hit and i just love how it's not that accurate but they do play a whole lot on their references. very good pacing on the development on their characters, really good moral lesson, and hades is just hella fun. the songs and hades are probably my favorite things in this movie.
Love it!.. my nieces favorite Disney film! Trying to convince her to dress as mega again just as she did as a kid lol
James Woods as Hades was perfection
I was about 12 when I saw this movie, and I had never really heard gospel before. The Muses' songs awoke something in me that changed my life, and even now I still get so emotional when I hear those songs. I've heard a lot of people complain about the plot and the jokes/references, but it will always be one of my favorite Disney movies because of how profoundly the music affected me.
Do you listen to gospel now?
@@earlonaweary9155 sometimes! It's hard for me to get into sometimes because I'm not a Christian. But I love artists who came from the traditional gospel scene, Sister Rosetta Tharpe being the all time greatest. 🔥
@KateBerger That's awesome! Oh wow, that's so cool you know about her! You don't have to be a Christian to listen to gospel. Listen away! Jesus is for everyone 🙏🏽🙂
BEST Disney! And it's so rewatchable, there are so many little visual gags that you can watch it a dozen times and still spot new jokes 😁
Mannn idk why it brings me so much joy seeing this lol but I seen this movie about 50 times and you made it feel like the first lol MEEELLLLOOOOOOOOOOO
You are knocking out the Disney renaissance era- aka my childhood!🙏🏽
Hercules is in my top 5 favorite, maybe top 3, Disney animated films. It is so underrated in my opinion. The music is top tier and the comedy... OMG! HILARIOUS! I just love it so much.
Sidenotes:
Danny did indeed actually sing the song.
The editor notes are everything! lol
This is one of my favorites. I like every song with "I Can't Go the Distance" and "Won't Say I'm in Love" as two of my all-time faves.
100% of the time, if I hear the word jeepers... "Jeepers, mister; you're really strong!" Pops in my head.
Man you tryna make me cry or something with that sudden hit of nostalgia 😭… I feel so old bro
Which part?
@@TheMarvelousMthe beginning, that’s how Disney movies started when you watched them in cassette
@@gryffindorimar ahhhh. I gotta be real, I like to look up old VHS intros.
I had this soundtrack on cassette as a kid. This movie has the best music!
Hades was one of my favorite villains. The music was also totally awesome.
Meg making Mello want to act up 😂😂
James Woods kills it in this movie. Only other voice actor that comes as close as Robin Williams in Aladdin to stealing the entire show
And "Zero to Hero" is the best song in the movie
Thanks Mel one of my favorite Disney movies of all time
"Damn, she fine."
***Malcolm X/ Denzel insert***
🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌
Bro Mel and billy always ALWAYS make me laugh my ass off😂😂😂
I remember seeing this film in the theatres with my younger brother - I was 7, he was 4 - and that scene of Pain and Panic falling down the stairs at the beginning made him laugh so hard he actually fell/rolled into the aisle 😂
This is one of my favorite disney's movies❤
I'm sorry, but that "Feature Presentation" intro gave me serious goosebumps! I miss the VHS days...
Same, it just had a vibe to it.
Yo, did anybody catch that Mel said the exact same line as Billy Binges when meg asked herc his name?! Im weak!😂
Susan Egan was in a tv show called Niki she acts just like Meg I loved it.
All I hear when Devito sings is
“You gotta pay the troll toll”
This is my favorite Disney movie ever since I was a child I always watched this. Great job Mell keep up the great work I wish you so many blessings 👍👍.
I *STILL* have that "fine china" 😅
Fun fact cerberes the 3 headed dogs names translates to spot so hades named his dog spot
Y’all better not tease with that seven universe reference 😂 I would die to see those reactions 🙏🏾😍
3:44 that’s what she said moment missed
This movie and goofy movie was my daughter's favorites, they had the best soundtracks.
