The closer you are to stock height and geometry, the better! For me as an adventurer, not a rock crawler, there's no need to ever go beyond 32's and a 2" lift. Just bought a 1997 Wrangler TJ Sahara Edition with >165,000 for my first ever vehicle! Only rust spot is on the hood, and it’s just a small bubble the size of a US quarter. Runs smoothly and the heat is great! Only real problems and downsides are a hole in the driver’s seat, the back window having a lot of scratches, a missing sun visor, and an issue with driver’s side door not opening from the outside. I also have to make sure the front passenger seatbelt makes an audible click, otherwise it wants to unfasten while driving.
Ethan, congrats on buying your first vehicle ever! That's awesome! The first vehicle I ever bought was a 97 TJ as well and I fell in love with it on day 1. How is yours treating you?
I am hoping to get my first car which is a 1997 Jeep Wrangler. It has 150,000 miles, it needs a new oil pump, and the driver seat is ripped but I don’t mind it really. The price is listed at $5,000 which is a good deal also depending too if there are other things wrong with it. I hope I can get it because it is my dream car. 😊

01 tj thing was a tank switch out the clutch to a upgraded one after five years, and to many rocks hit the radiator so replaced that, 33 inch tires on it, soft top wish i had the hard top. Hit 90 in 3rd gear. lol Ran that SOB like i stole it. Best dam jeep ever. Did my own oil changes every 3000 miles, Treater her good, until i sold her. All hwy miles. 4.0 with an Upgraded air filter and exhaust. and two inch bump lift. If your going to get one first time you have to replace the windshield look for a replacement with gorilla glass if you can, Never had a problem with the track bar. Buddy took it to a Tank course on a FOB, it did really good without all the hoopla.
400k! I'm almost there with my 2004. Yeah issues are coming up over the mileage, ac giving out, oil leaks, glady no rust much ( southern NM weather). Last year I had to change out the CPU. Still going strong. 🥺
I got a 97 Sahara ,it was fantastic, had it 21 years and would last 100 years more except they do-nothing for the Chassis frame Corrosion that gets in internally and causes structural failure.
My ‘05 is stock, experienced the death wobble years ago, fixed that and it has returned as expected. Replaced rear seal and it still leaks, when making trips of 20 miles or more, I take back roads, doesn’t feel as slow that way. The worst thing I deal with is my hard top leaks above the rear and side doors
I gotta 1999 Jeep TJ 4.0L 6 Cylinder but it’s automatic so could I still overheat from a clutch fan cuz my car overheats in the summer when I leave the car running with the A.C on for a minute
I've got an 04' rubicon with 6" lift, clayton control arms and front trackbar, teraflex shocks, bumpers front and rear, warn winch, on 35x14.5-15 pitbull rockers. I wheel it every chance I get, that thing amazes me every time I'm out.
He said the 4cly jeeps are underpowered but he doesn't realize the 2.5 came stock with 4.10 gears. My 2.5 keeps up with my friends yj with the 4.0 thanks to this gearing
Taken a 2.5 liter off road on many occasions. Climbed everything and kept up with all the big advanced Jeep rigs out there. Say it does quite well for off roading and rock crawling.
Sahara models came with Dana 44 rear and 35 front...Still have my 2k TJ to this day though I would like to put a front dana 44 and a 4 inch lift and 33's or 35's ....I keep putting it off though due to my playtoy 47 willys already lifted on 33's haha
@@rongray8416 My 2000 has a 3.5" lift with 33's. I think I am going to go up to 4.5" with 35's in the near future. I would love a 44 for the front as well. I also upgraded my gears to Yukon 4.56 gear ratio. Drives great with 33's.
Blower motor switch failure is NOT related to a bad blower motor resistor. The resistor fails due to poor design. The 12V power goes through the blower motor (30Amp motor), then through the resistor, then through the fan speed control switch, then through the blend switch (floor/dash/defroster selector), and finally to ground. That's 30+Amps going through small wires into small switches, which overheat and melt and shown in the photo in your video. That's 30+ amps, because as the motor wears out it draws more amps and the fuse/circuit breakers don't blow until well past what the switches and connectors can handle. The only TRUE fix is a rewire of the circuit from the resistor all the way to ground using relays to bypass sending 30+A through the switches. And that only works if you have a NEW blower motor or 40A+ relays. I personally went through 5 resistors trying to fix this. It got so bad the parts store was trying to refuse replacing the blown resistors under the lifetime warranty! Once I rewired the circuit and put in a new blower motor, no issues and its been YEARS.
Pretty much all jeeps suck at highway speeds .Their short wheelbase attributes to that .Jeeps are quite simply meant for backroad and offroad use. If I plan a trip I plan it just like I was riding my Harley . When you're driving long distance Highways suck, time goes slower and The view sucks. So therefore I mix it up with a little Highway mostly back roads and alternative routes which make the trip more enjoyable and you get to see more. whereas on the highways you really see nothing of Interest.
@@VoodooDewey69 My '05 TJ Rocky Mtn 4.0 with a 2" lift on 32" ko2's is excellent on road and especially off road. It's when people foolishly move up to 33's and up who don't re-gear that give TJ's this bs negative feedback.
I found this video very helpful. I’ve never been a Jeep guy. Looking at a 2002 SE with the 2.5. I wanted to learn about potential issues that I will likely need to diagnose and repair. This was a great heads up. Don’t plan on off-roading a bunch. So it will remain mostly stock. Thank you for the informative video that touched on a lot of things! Going to pull the trigger on this little guy to keep my 2017 Ram with a Cummins out of the salt. I’ll soak it with some fluid film and run it as a daily driver.
Brother what you said you would like to do at the end of the video, buy a 4 cylinder jeep and upgrade the axles and motor.. Well upgrading the trans and transfer case would be required on that swap. The 4 cylinders came with transmission that was never going to hold up behind a v8
Bought my first car with my dad today. Such a steal. 2000 Jeep Wrangler sport. Manual with 4.0 and everything, only 60k Miles!! It’s definitely a project, as the motor seized, and needs a bit of other work. But it will be ready by the time I get my permit. $5,000!!!!! That’s it. What a steal
I've had my 2001 Sport (4.0/5 SPD) since 2005. Still only have just over 61k miles on it. Original soft top, and all stock. Just put a new set of factory original Good Year tires on last fall. Rust is the enemy... I've had to repair driver side fender & repaint. Slight frame rust... but Ohio winters. It was my daily driver for 5 years - VERY short commute. It's been garaged for 13 years now... only used as a flat tow behind our motorhome.
I want to buy one so bad. Question is the TJ a Rubicon? And the TJ I want to buy owner says after replacing thermostat and water pump is still overheating can this just be a burping the system issue.?
I'm looking to buy a project off of another guy. A 97 2.4L TJ. It is supposed to be rebuilt but I take as much info as I can. Here in New-Brunswick Canada, we have DMV inspection that has been passed on it so this means that rust and steering, brakes and supensions are good. However i'm concerned cause he told me that the U-Joint in front needs fixing in order for the 4x4 to be operational. I owned a jeep back a few years and the u-joint is not an issue I know they usually break due to normal wear.. But would you guys change it on a project ? Cause I'd do it, and this indicates that it may have been rough handled 🤔... Any ideas guys ?
2006 4.0 straight inline torque ,Dana 44 was last of the mohicans like the caterpillar engines & truck engines , the intake exhaust manifold must use the twins , separate 3 & 3 123. 456 the best other is rigid exhaust for off road,, bumps so it won't break, , elimate clutch fan it stresses the engine, bigger battery act like is a V8 on fans cooling n exhaust system catalytic converters ,, heat is the problem n will solve gasket leaks n wear n tear , cool air intake system will help by having ac vent hook on filter tube, heat soak use hood scoop & small electric fan hiding under scoop for rain water dirt to breath,,
Aidan they do not which is why they have a tendency to rust from the inside out. Some people will actually drill holes in them frame themselves so the water can drain. Hope that helps Aidan
The wrench noise is hella annoying. Just my .02 . Thank you though for making this video. I think I learned alot as I'm about to buy a used TJ when I can find one that hasn't been abused.
I already own a 2005 TJ Unlimited. Sounds like he just reading off a script had some good information but Jeep TJ's do not have rack and pinions steering
I already have a basic knowledge of it. So, I spend 5 hours of research with more of a fine eye on the issues of these trucks. The video in total takes about 8-10 hours to make. If I have been spitting out garbage, I wouldn’t have had so many people validate the issues. Hope you have a better day!
I am looking at buying a used 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ with 197,000+ miles on in. Can I have some thoughts on this? My dad is not very supportive about it and I wanna have a good reason why he shouldn’t be worried.
Well, if the car wasn’t completely taken care of and maintained, issues may pop up. Issues will pop up less frequent if it was maintained well, jt it is high ish miles from 98, so things will break. However, if you are willing to get your hands dirty, you wont have any issues
I live in California and I have never seen rust on a Jeep like that. Your examples have to be from the rust belt. BTW, thanks for the video. It was very informative.

@@stillistix9704 I think the most important thing is to look for rust on the frame because if there is bad rust and rot stay away. Check both the outer and inner frame rails. Also check the floor boards for rust as well when you’re looking at the inside. Simply pull back the carpets and look and feel for wetness. The 2.4 was a good motor. How many miles? Do you have a pic you can send me on Instagram?
Don't think so i have a buddy with a 98 sahara and D35. D44 was on the Rubicons and an option in later years. I have a 2006 TJ sport that came with a rear D44 from the factory.
A lot of misinformation in this video. Most photos are of the 2 door Unlimited built only from 2004 to 2006. It has a longer wheelbase and is the holy grail of Jeep Wranglers. Bought my 04 Unlimited new. It's not depreciating at all. Even with 163000 miles, I can sell it close to the original sticker price. Jeep Wranglers hold their value very well. Stay away from the 2007 thru 2012 with the 3.6 minivan motors. Long time Jeep guy. I have built a Cherokee XJ, YJ, TJ, and my never for sale LJ. Do your own research and learn. This video has several questionable issues.
The 4.0 inline the best n transmission 4x4 drive,,. Dana 44 The problem is heat need tow radiator 3 metal hoses find, aftermarket parts suspension etc fans extra hood scoop, fins on larger oil pan , extension on valve pan after market off road rock rollers, for heat transmission pan cooling fins , fins on axle covers,, need the best cooling fluids oils sae high mileage 5-20 half & half 10-40 bestline additive n transmission coolant green ,plus cooling additive in spring & summer,. These will last long time, I would not go far n beyond on for large wheeling axles will break transmission n motor with force heat ,, needs bottom plates ,
If you can't pronounce Dana correctly, I can't trust a thing you say. Even if it is a voice-over, you gotta check that. If you aren't thorough with checking the video before you put it out, what else have you neglected?
I miss say something and I am wrong on everything? You must really hate people with accents, foreigners, and speech impediments. Be okay with people being different, thanks.
@@AutoMotivate nope. no rust, that happens to all vehicles in the midwest, not a TJ jeep specifically. Blower in the AC works just fine. Leaks!?! are you kidding?!! that happens to all old vehicles. Of course it has no leaks. You keep replacing seals lol
I have the exact silver LJ Rubicon shown early in the video. love it!!
I have 3004 LJ had it for 14 yrs
I casually called my jeep a truck the other day. She still won’t talk to me
She probably flipped you off too! 😎
I gotta 1999 Jeep TJ 4.0L 6 Cylinder but it’s automatic so could I still overheat from a clutch fan cuz my car overheats in the summer when I leave the car running with the A.C on for a minute
rust is definitely not a problem in Australia with the TJ and heater resistor is 2 screws and 1 plug very very easy fix and easy to get to
I've got an 04' rubicon with 6" lift, clayton control arms and front trackbar, teraflex shocks, bumpers front and rear, warn winch, on 35x14.5-15 pitbull rockers. I wheel it every chance I get, that thing amazes me every time I'm out.
'04 not 04'
He said the 4cly jeeps are underpowered but he doesn't realize the 2.5 came stock with 4.10 gears. My 2.5 keeps up with my friends yj with the 4.0 thanks to this gearing
I just bought a 1997 wrangler with the 2.5 4cyl myself and was waiting to hear something good.
Yeah only for offroading, on road they can reach the same speeds no problem
Taken a 2.5 liter off road on many occasions. Climbed everything and kept up with all the big advanced Jeep rigs out there. Say it does quite well for off roading and rock crawling.
Some of the TJ's (Non Rubicon and Non LJ) came with a Dana 44 rear axle. (Mine did and it is a Sport).
Thank you for letting me know, I’ll be sure to edit the video. Apparently all the special edition Jeeps came with the D44, too.
I appreciate it!
So did my '05 Rocky Mtn.
I had stock Tj non rubicon with Dana 44 rear end
And the fan resistor blows in every car I work in a 10 franchise dealership in aus I sell a dozen a week for many cars
The Dana 35 will rock 40" Maxis Treps...I know because I've done it.
Bro the info on the i4's is backwards. The 4 bangers are good off road however suck at highways speeds
Pretty much all jeeps suck at highway speeds .Their short wheelbase attributes to that .Jeeps are quite simply meant for backroad and offroad use. If I plan a trip I plan it just like I was riding my Harley
Getting an 06 2.4 for around 10k this week. No rust at all and no issues with around 120k miles. Looking forward to getting it
U ain’t getting shit 😂
How’s it going now, 8 months later, I’m about to get one I think
Knew he was a rookie when he said put a V8 in a TJ.. Every hardcore jeeper knows the only way to go turbo diesel
How's the new addition to you auto family Richard? Are you liking the Jeep so far?
Did you get it?
Did you end up buying it? How has it been
2004 Jeep TJ since new. I love this Jeep especially topless 😊 in the ol’ Rio Grande Valley and South Padre. It will probably outlast me.
I’d advise staying away from the Donna axels. Dana’s however, are usually pretty good.
Brother what you said you would like to do at the end of the video, buy a 4 cylinder jeep and upgrade the axles and motor.. Well upgrading the trans and transfer case would be required on that swap. The 4 cylinders came with transmission that was never going to hold up behind a v8
Yes sir my 97 is a conversion from 2.5 to 4.0 .The computer and wiring harness also have to be swaped out.
Yes, I know that there is more to it. Depending what you trow in there, may also have to get custom driveshafts aswell.
@@AutoMotivate 👍Great video
The transmission on the four cylinders definitely wouldn't hold it but the transfer case probably would. The np231 is pretty stout
I was just given my father in laws 97 he bought new. I'm pretty pumped about it but it needs a roof thankfully garage kept.
My TJ is not a car, its a JEEP silly, lol
😂
Incredibly informative video!! Much appreciation for your time, Kind Sir🙏🙏🙏
I want to buy one so bad. Question is the TJ a Rubicon? And the TJ I want to buy owner says after replacing thermostat and water pump is still overheating can this just be a burping the system issue.?
Thanks for the video 🤟
Thank you friend 🙏
Have a 2018 hard top. Would love an older tj or yj. Can't lift the doors off any more, that's what happens when you get old
I'm looking to buy a project off of another guy.
Brake caliper slides, sticking calipers are my problems so far.
Really one of the best videos I’ve seen,,,
🙏
P0462 check engine light fix. Replaced sending unit and PCM still no good. Any ideas?
THANKS SUCH GOOD TIPS AND ADVICE ESPECIALLY “THE DEATH WOBBLE” FREAKED ME OUT! Thanks
I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ I want to change the Dana 35 rear end to a queen 88 rear end do I have to do the front too
I'm no mechanic but as long as you have the same gear ratio front and rear it should be ok. But id ask a real mechanic to be sure.
2006 4.0 straight inline torque ,Dana 44 was last of the mohicans like the caterpillar engines & truck engines , the intake exhaust manifold must use the twins , separate 3 & 3 123. 456 the best other is rigid exhaust for off road,, bumps so it won't break, , elimate clutch fan it stresses the engine, bigger battery act like is a V8 on fans cooling n exhaust system catalytic converters ,, heat is the problem n will solve gasket leaks n wear n tear , cool air intake system will help by having ac vent hook on filter tube, heat soak use hood scoop & small electric fan hiding under scoop for rain water dirt to breath,,
Nice and concise. 👍️
Very informative. Thank you
My 2001 wrangler sport 4.0 has none of these problems.
Hey can someone tell me if the Jeep Tj’s have drain holes in the frame not the floors but the frame idk
Aidan they do not which is why they have a tendency to rust from the inside out. Some people will actually drill holes in them frame themselves so the water can drain.
Hope that helps Aidan
@@vigilantemotors Also, many use Eastwood's TJ interior frame spray when drilling holes into their frames adding to its longevity.
@@JeepTJWheelin Yes, that stuff is like gold and works really well!
very entertaining and informative video, thank you am
The wrench noise is hella annoying. Just my .02 . Thank you though for making this video. I think I learned alot as I'm about to buy a used TJ when I can find one that hasn't been abused.
You have the 4 cyl wrong. It's terrible on the street. It's great for trails. It has 4.10 axle gears vs 3.07,3.55 or 3.73 the 6 cyl gets.
Buying a Jeep Wrangler 99 for 1500 does it worth it ??
Yes lmao
Do it?
I already own a 2005 TJ Unlimited. Sounds like he just reading off a script had some good information but Jeep TJ's do not have rack and pinions steering
I am reading off some sort of script, but it’s one I created after 5 ish hours of research.
Thank you for letting me know!
@@AutoMotivate That does explain it. Only 5 hours to research this subject.
Should I get a jeep tj 01 manual with 175k miles ?
Great video, thank you - this is my dream car, hope to have one soon
the comment on the D44 is irrelevant as this video does not cover 2007-2018 which is the model years for the jk, this video is for the tj (1996-2006)
Jeep cherokee was a xj jeep wrangler was a tj from 97-06
Very helpful - thanks!
DUDE... It's pronounced DAY-na, NOT DAH-na.
What country do you live in?
It’s definitely not the end of the world 😂 mistakes happen. But thank you for correcting me!
I live in Florida, USA
I live in California and I have never seen rust on a Jeep like that. Your examples have to be from the rust belt. BTW, thanks for the video. It was very informative.
The 4 cylinders have the crappy AX5 transmission, the I6 has the great AX15, he left that out.
I've honestly never seen the 4 cyclinder even for sale I question if they are even real :P
I almost threw up when you said “Jeep Cherokee TJ” 🤦♂️🤦♂️🙄
How is the fuel consumption on this?
Horrible... 13mpg is my average. And that's driving gingerly!
I get 14mpg
at 1:22 you are talking about rust on the floor pan. why are you using a xj as a example cant you find a yj for a example misleading
I just sold my 97 TJ after 26 years. Lost interest in it last 3 years
What about an 09 ?
Could you have at least given some Pros about the car? It makes me feel like the tj a piece of junk.
Jonathan are you still looking for some answers on this. I have owned 3 different TJ's, 2 JK's and now a JL and a TJ in the garage so if you have any questions hit me up I will gladly help
@@vigilantemotors Hi, can you help me? I’m going to buy a Tj 2.4 2005, what do you think about it? No off road.
Im italian and here is very difficult to own a 4l..
Do anyone know if the 1998 Sahara edition came with a Dana 44?
Don't think so i have a buddy with a 98 sahara and D35. D44 was on the Rubicons and an option in later years. I have a 2006 TJ sport that came with a rear D44 from the factory.
@@dnewty Same with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn, stout rig!
suggesting a V8 swap in a TJ which was meant to be a 4 popper isn't going to work, due to CO2 emissions regulations ... NO WAY
🤔 people do it all the time! Would love to do it myself!
@@AutoMotivate good luck at passing the vehicle registration, at least here in Europe!
Dana not Donna
My mistake, thank you
TJ 2,4 daily driving ..from France
The 4.0 inline the best n transmission 4x4 drive,,. Dana 44 The problem is heat need tow radiator 3 metal hoses find, aftermarket parts suspension etc fans extra hood scoop, fins on larger oil pan , extension on valve pan after market off road rock rollers, for heat transmission pan cooling fins , fins on axle covers,, need the best cooling fluids oils sae high mileage 5-20 half & half 10-40 bestline additive n transmission coolant green ,plus cooling additive in spring & summer,. These will last long time, I would not go far n beyond on for large wheeling axles will break transmission n motor with force heat ,, needs bottom plates ,
Valdrá la pena un modelo 2002 con 190 mil millas?
Depends on the condition and what you're paying for it. Also, I would highly recommend the 4.0 I6 over the squirrel powered 2.5L.
All cars have issues, except for land cruiser, thos things are invincible.
😂
Donna 35?
Awesome thanks
Winch not "wrench"
After I uploaded the video, I realized that mistake.
Diesel swaps are interesting
If Jesus comes back, he will come back.. ON A JEEP Wrangler. Working mans car.
I drive a TJ and Jesus rides with me, his helper too.
Wus is bulin undab da paint
nice summary but guy, you need to speak more clearly to maximize the value of your vids.
Looking at a 2004 Tj X with 145k miles, for $2k, manual, is it a good idea?
No need for background music
If you can't pronounce Dana correctly, I can't trust a thing you say. Even if it is a voice-over, you gotta check that. If you aren't thorough with checking the video before you put it out, what else have you neglected?
I miss say something and I am wrong on everything? You must really hate people with accents, foreigners, and speech impediments. Be okay with people being different, thanks.

Terrible video title. Most of these issues are not TJ specific.
I mean, I’ve had many people validate the issues
@@AutoMotivate nope. no rust, that happens to all vehicles in the midwest, not a TJ jeep specifically.
Blower in the AC works just fine.
Leaks!?! are you kidding?!! that happens to all old vehicles.
I guess you have been focusing on the negatives.
The death wobble is not because it is a jeep, it is because people lift them inadequately, it can happen to any solid axle lifted car. A friend has a Chevy truck with death wobble.
cracked exhaust? mine is fine and I have many friends with TJs and have not heard about a cracked manifold
I guess you have some validity but greatly uneducated about the jeeps.
