Good video and a respectable list of mods. Here are my top 5 if you are going offroad: 1) Recovery/Safety gear (First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, HiLift Jack, Winch, D-Rings/Hooks, recovery straps/ropes) 2) Armor (front and rear bumpers, skids and side armor) 3) Communication (CB Radio) 4) Axles (gearing and lockers) 5) Lift and Tires Scott
my list(since i only have ever in my life owned 1 jeep....and shes my baby....my 05 got the following): 1. 3" lift 2. Sony head unit w/Sirrusxm 3. K&N air intake 4. rims/tires from 31" to 33" 5. grab handles
I’d suggest a different list/order of first upgrades depending on where you live/wheel. Wheeling in the woods is a lot different then wheeling in Moab. 1) Safety first - recovery equipment/med kit/ fire extinguisher. 2) Lift/Tires 3) Bumpers (where else u gonna mount your big spare?) 4) Winch 5) Gears/Lockers And if you’re a city crawler then you need: 1) Cheapest tallest lift you can find on the smallest axels. 2) 24”+ rims with low profile tires. 3) a high-lift jack mounted on the hood. 4) lots of lights - point them everywhere! 5) shiny exhaust tip bra! 😁😁
I’ve been looking for a simple video like this! Saves me a lot of time when my friends are thinking of buying one. No need to explain so much anymore :D
1. Winch (agreed) 2. Lockers front and rear and depending on tire size, consider upgrades, at the very least some chromoly axle shaft 3. 4 inch lift or so, 4. 33" tires minimum (recommended on the baby dana 30 and 35) 5. Lights, lights and more lights.
Good vid! I actually enjoy a lot of your content!!! I just bought my first jeep recently (98 TJ) and LOVE IT. It did come with some things done like a small lift, stroker motor, and a slip yoke eliminator, but it was still rolling on stock axles, open diffs, and 31" street tires. To be quite honest, those Michelins surprised the hell out of me, which is why I would honestly say that a portable compressor would be in my top 5 first mods. The ability to air down tires, no matter what kind, will give you heaps of grip. Of course, I did end up getting a set of 33" MTs but they weren't ABSOLUTELY necessary. I agree with a winch 100%. I didn't get one right away, but I did buy a come-along and some straps the day I got the jeep. Good thing, too, since I got stuck in a mud hole THE FIRST NIGHT!!! Having a winch is like having a front locker, only cheaper (and useful in MANY other ways). Last but not least, I would recommend a sway bar disconnect kit!!!!! Hopefully someone found these tips handy!!!
1. Tow points, front and rear. 2. Skids, especially rock sliders. 3. Winch bumper and winch. 4. Lift. 5. Slip Yoke Eliminator for your NP231. 4 and 5 should be done together.
Sure. Rough country sells an inexpensive kit. You can install if you’re handy it get a mechanic to do it for nominal cost. Works with stock shocks or 2 1/2” lift (which you might consider if your shocks have faded and sagged…likely for a car this old). It’s a manual sway disconnect setup but works well if you carry a small sledge to get the Lynch pins back in once you’re finished on the trail Stock TJ ride isn’t great, and budget replacement suspension (RC or similar) won’t be an improvement so you’ll want to rely on the sway bar disconnects to improve front end articulation when you’re wheeling. Made all the difference, and just used ‘em last weekend. Totally worth it
I have had a Jeep TJ series like yours since 2004. It has been nothing but good to me. As for mods, I think you are spot on. LED headlights weren't a huge thing in 04 as they are now, but last year I did decide to upgrade and I am happy I did. Keep these videos coming.. they are very informative and entertaining at the same time. You do a great job at this.
on the bit about the head unit. i got a blutooth head unit from walmart for like $25 about 6 months ago. it has been amazing. took me less than an hour to install and has improved my day to day commute.
I guess it depends on how you use it. I use mine to make a living recovering people on the beach, on the roads, and in the woods. I have a 13k winch and bumper for obvious reasons. A cheap amazon bumper and $300 winch. A couple thousand cycles and still going. From motorhomes to high lift equipment. I have a tube skeleton with roof rack to carry equipment as well as junk left behind on the beach. Obviously I have a hitch front and rear. Also have a second winch on a receiver plate for the back, Second battery in the back. 31x10.50 Goodyear tires. A little bigger, but don't require a lift. Lift doesn't serve a purpose. A few extra lights for night recovery rounds out the list. I did put in a cheap $30 stereo simply for the USB charging port. It won't play anything, but it charges great. Player after a week. Including the tires, I have less than $2000 in mods.
I own a 1997 jeep tj Sahara edition and I’m putting on a new light bar, roof rack, 2 inch lift kit with mud tires and army jerry cans a shovel and axe mount for the hood and a spare tire to go on my roof
1A. Sugar-momma/daddy. 1. Tuffy security products. 2. In-coil supplemental airbags and anti-rust undercarriage fluid. 3. Winch, and home-fabbed anti-sway bar disconnects. 4. Armor with 2" receivers. 5. Siped mudders. 31x10.5s or similarly-narrow 33s can fit TJs/LJs without a suspension lift. Trxus MTs and Duratracs used to be somewhat affordable. 6. External racks. 7. Dana44 rear axle with OxLocker or ARB.
Besides normal equipment like a shovel, booster cables and snow chains; for a real Jeep that’s stock (not the plastic ones) the best modifications furthering the Jeep’s already good off road ability could be listed: ~ M/t tires plus spare (235 or 33” is fine unless you plan to rock crawl) $400-700 ~ Hilift jack 48” all cast (keep inside not out, it is iron after all) $120-140 ~ Recovery straps x2 (3300 working lb rating/10000lb max load rating or greater) $15-25 each ~ Strong, reliable battery $120-150 ~ Winch (8-12k lb is sufficient) $800-1200 (Prices are approximate and in Canadian dollars) Useful extras could be: ~ Part time locking differential (front > rear) or posi ~ Suspension lift 1-6”
My top’ must do list .. would be oversized tires -re-Gear / lift suspension/intake /62mm throttle/ throttle spacer low end torque /headers/ exhaust/roller rocker arm . Then last winch 😅
1. Rack (with stuff like jerry cans, etc) this also helps when you go through tight walls as it buffers from scratching your car 2. Winch 3. Suspension 4. Light bar 5. Tires
Nice! I bought a TJ Rubicon a few months ago and already have the 1st 4 mods, including EXACTLY the same headlights (just installed 2 days ago) and the same tires installed shortly after purchase. It came with a winch and good floor mats. Gonna have to get a stereo.
1. budget boost, new shocks, and slightly oversize AT tires 2. updated radio 3. up armor the bottom with skid plate protection and heavy duty diff covers 4. underseat lockable storage drawer 5. Mounting points on dash (magnetic, velcro) for phone or a dedicated tablet to augment infotainment, diagnostics, and navigation and other mountable items you want tucked away securely on dash or A pillar 6. steering stabilizer on track bar 7. air compressor (portable or installed) and air down valves to adjust tire pressure on the fly 8. CB radio 9. common tools like tire iron, wrench, hammer, socket set, etc in driver side door 10. fire extinguisher and other gear attachable to roll bar (first aid kit, emergency blanket, utility knife, paracord, sleeping bag), plus repair items (tire kit, battery jump start kit)
I agree you should have a winch but try not to put it on the stock bumper because even with the winch plate it may twist the metal. If you get a winch try to get the upgraded bumper first just to be on the safeside
You seem to have put some money into that jeep maybe if you want it to be around awhile you might consider doing something about all that rust like getting that frame undercoated even if it has surface rust you can still get Woolwax or fluid film on that frame to slow it down
I just bought my first Jeep Wrangler. It has some mods. But can you please tell me what kind and dimensions of tires and wheels you have on this jeep. Thanks so much.
Dude you gotta rip out that carpet. First thing I did to my 97 TJ and it the easiest free mod you can do. I have the same floor mats and they look nice without the carpet. It also makes it easier to access drain plugs and make sure rust doesn’t catch up on you and super easy to clean. I had a 98 Cherokee where the floors were getting a little squishy. But the carpet must go!
Good video but being an oldie i agree with some of your mods but not others 😊. 1 Tyres yes, but just colour code original steel wheels. 2 Buy a softtop or hardtop. 3 Blue tooth radio yes. 4 replace suspension arms and steering.
i currently am 16 and own a jeep that’s stock just like u used to. i am looking to upgrade to a winch and tires and a lift, but it’s so expensive. if you don’t mind me asking, how long did it take u to get the money you needed to do all of this? love the jeep btw
On the off-chance you see this comment, how have those headlights held up? If they’re still going strong, how many years of use have you gotten from them?
All mods were good, BUT, the winch. I have aluminum 4 fishing rods mounted on my 05 wrangler X. I use them a lot, but the winch would be great. I’m 70, so for a jack, I depend on AAA, I have been very rough on my body,so allow me that comfort
16-17, hell , I buried my truck at 38 and walked out with my wife and a 4 year old in the middle of the night in the middle of the woods, age don’t change that ;)
Man, it is so hard to find full rollup window doors for my '99 TJ - I have the half doors with the sliding windows for now but I REALLY want the full doors and I can only find used ones on Ebay! - and everyone wants WAY TOO MUCH - anyone know where I can get OEM rollup window hard top doors?
Lift, tires, tank of gas, tank of gas, tank of gas. These all the only 5 mods you need.
This hits different…
I know this is a old comment but it's fire 😂
Absolute facts
This aged well

You got my like because of the rubber joke 😂
Jeep JK owner here! Always loved the TJ's though. Those are all excellent mods for the Jeep Wrangler platform in general. 100% agree
My brother has a JKU! I love my TJ it’s been amazing to me. Thanks for watching!
My OCD kicked in as soon as I noticed you did not have a matching spare wheel and tire.
David J Kunter agreed i've always wondered why folks ignore their spare when they lift their tires. why have it towed when you can drive?
David J Kunter bruh it was the first thing i saw
I just bought a Jeep with a smaller spare... but that’ll be my first mod.
Sun rot is the enemy of tires. Put a cover on it too.
*Quietly covers the spare on my tailgate*
That’s crazy how customisable they’re. Sick Jeep man!
1. Dana 60 axles with diff lockers 5-13 gears, long arm lift

my list(since i only have ever in my life owned 1 jeep....and shes my baby....my 05 got the following):
1. 3" lift
2. Sony head unit w/Sirrusxm

I’d suggest a different list/order of first upgrades depending on where you live/wheel.
Wheeling in the woods is a lot different then wheeling in Moab.
1) Safety first - recovery equipment/med kit/ fire extinguisher.

2) 24”+ rims with low profile tires.
3) a high-lift jack mounted on the hood.
4) lots of lights - point them everywhere!
5) shiny exhaust tip bra!
😁😁
Low profile tires are gay on imports and unthinkable on a Jeep. That kind of stuff gets tires slashed here..
awesome vid. Got the Stereo face, LED headlights, New soft top, replaced the HVAC board and next is some engine upgrades. Thanks

Kevin fix the wifi yesh man thx!
I bought mine new in ‘98 (Sahara)…only thing I’ve changed is the radio (no longer need a tape player 🤣).
I learned from an off road recovery tow company that a simple come along hand operated winch is the best piece of equipment to have when off roading.
It is certainly useful but the best thing to have is driving skill then tires. Come-along or similar would be 3rd for sure though!!
1. Tow points, front and rear. 2. Skids, especially rock sliders. 3. Winch bumper and winch. 4. Lift. 5. Slip Yoke Eliminator for your NP231. 4 and 5 should be done together.
A matching spare is a nice touch too ;)
Sway bar disconnect. Cheap, easy, and allows a better ride without upgrading suspension
Can you explain this a little bit?
Sure. Rough country sells an inexpensive kit. You can install if you’re handy it get a mechanic to do it for nominal cost. I'd go Line-X interior instead of floormats, but that's just my preference. Lot more expensive, of course!
Yeah, I Line-X'd the interior of mine first thing. Made it super quiet, and the interior is pretty much indestructable.
i put turf instead of my floor mats

I haven't had a tj but on my YJ I'd say lift, new tires, snorkel, winch, and lightbar
