    It's so interesting to hear people say the entrance tunnel is scary. I grew up going through that tunnel to get to the elevators on my walk to preschool and being a little kid I never thought anything of it. I felt like it was an adventure and a welcome alternative to walking up the huge hill on 187th st

      Graffiti is very scary! It shows that lawlessness rules! Also, you are trapped there (there are no midway exits). BTW, when there was graffiti on the train, I had to wonder whether the tampering could also indicate that the trains had been mechanically compromised!

    I've been through 191st street on the 1 train a couple times when I visited New York in the late 2010s. It's pretty neat how deep it is being under a hill and how Broadway is at the bottom of the hill. To me, the 1 train is the simplest train route in the subway. Nearly a straight line, all local 24/7, using R62As, & mostly in Manhattan with the top 3 stations in the Bronx. I love the simplicity of it.

    242nd is definitely my favorite stop on the 1 train. A really peaceful station with the og wood floors and right across from Van Cortland and a short bike ride to Yonkers

    I find the geological and topographic features of upper Manhattan and the Bronx to be very interesting. I think before urbanization, these areas were practically the southern extension of the Catskill mountain range. Rocks and boulders visible today in these areas are the exact same as.in the Catskills. Even the Bronx has a waterfall on the Bronx river! A common feature throughout the Catskills. Also, I heard there are ancient fault lines in the bedrock of Manhattan and especially in the Bronx where tunnels could not be dug, which is why you see elevated train lines in these areas today. Inwood park at the northern tip of Manhattan is like a magical place that connects you to the past, to the time of the Lenape Indians.

    My thoughts: probably a good chance of surviving a nuclear explosion if you're in the 191st st station at that depth. Pretty cool how it was created in a hill. Carving away at the bedrock when the tunnel was created over 100 years is certainly an engineering feat.

    OMG I have always hated that train station! I worked at a facility in the area and the first few times when I got out of work I would seriously get a freaking panic attack because I'm claustrophobic! It would be so packed with the teens getting out of school and taking the train! The elevators would be completely PACKED! I would pray it didn't get stuck or the kids wouldn't fight!! I started taking a cab to work! I never even knew about the Broadway entrance! I only thought the St.Nicholas entrance existed!

    That tunnel is remarkably clean compared to when I was there last May. When I went through it there was only about a 2-3 foot wide section of pavement that wasn't covered in trash and in a few spots you had to step over trash/people lying there to go through. Definitely not a great entrance to the station

  • @langleywallingford260
    @langleywallingford260 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Dyckman St station is, ironically, elevated, because the ground goes precipitously down underneath Fort George Hill, which is an extension of St. Nicholas Avenue and which the 1 train runs underneath. The track bed remains even. It's nothing like the F and G trains rising uphill between Carroll St (underground) and Smith - 9th Streets (the highest station). Broadway, near Fairview AVE, sits in a valley between two cliffs. St. Nicholas Ave is the east cliff and Fort Washington Ave is the west cliff. The 190th St A train station has a very similar design to this station and can be accessed by tunnel from Bennett Ave (one block west of Broadway) or by elevator from Fort Washington Ave just south of Margaret Corbin Circle (which is actually one long block north of 190th, the equivalent of about two and a half city blocks). I'm sure there's a video on that station too and I think I've seen it but I just don't remember it that well, but I'll look for it. Thanks for the amazing videos!
