Seawind REBUILT Our CATAMARAN STEERING Under WARRANTY
While sailing 12,000 miles our new Seawind 1600 catamaran’s steering system was failing one part at a time putting us in potentially dangerous situations. After discussion and research Seawind agreed to refit the steering under warranty while we were in remote French Polynesia, hopefully freeing us to answer the call of adventure once more.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. I'm really glad that Seawind is taking care of you. Some of the other manufacturers are not taking care of there customers at all and they are posting content about it on TH-cam which is raising awareness to people in the sailing community and prospective buyers like me. I'd rather go with a Seawind because of this than some of the other brands that are dropping the ball and besides that, I really like the looks of the Seawind much better than those other boats that the customers are not being taking care of by the manufacturers. Good on you for posting content like this to inform us all about what's going on and how they are taking care of you. It says a lot about Seawind and I appreciate it.

Don't overlook the fact that it was Seawind's under designed and under powered system that failed, but kudos to Seawind for fixing their problem - eventually.
Finally the fittings look like an offshore boat. Previously they reminded me of my Nacra F18, which I also had to swap parts of the steering on every once in a while ;-)

You’ve really earned this upgraded steering system/autopilot , It’s reassuring to see much beefier fittings and mechanisms , the inner engineer in me that loves to over engineer things is screaming “why didn’t they do this in the first place” 🤣😂 but that’s very easy to say with “Hines sight “ 🤣😃🍻
Excellent comment Dave!! On a performance cruiser the manufacturer walk a tight rope between weight and strength. For example the T3 autopilot is much stronger but much heavier and uses a lot more power. The new gear box is much heavier and so on….
The good news is that they used the events in the field to improve the boat.

Navigating the intricacies of a boat's steering system has been more stressful than I ever imagined! But it's great to see that you both are handling it with such positive spirits. Maintaining the boat is crucial, of course, but the joy you both radiate while out on the ocean-with the wind in your faces and smiles all around truly captures what it's all about. Terrific video. I really hope this solves the issues. It's been too long. Lawyers tell people who want RVs to never buy a new one, get one that's at least a year old, owned by someone smart who's taken care of it, fixed problems. So to me, Wanderlust is worth more than a brand new one. And if you ever have to hand steer a long passage and I can hop a plane....

We’re feeling good about this fix finally sticking, but having you on board would definitely make the miles a lot more fun. You’re dead right about buying something that’s been through the wringer. I am so happy to hear you all are fixed up. I only sailed 1/2 day on ocean by hand once and it was too much time at the wheel. I can't imagine what you all have gone thru with broken autopilot for so long. Cheers on Seawind and great job Harbors Unknown for enduring.

For a long time I wondered why seawind was not solving the issues. It’s bad advertisement for them. But now it’s clear that they did take action. And it should restore somewhat faith in them.
The Huge beef up in the new system should work.

Other blue water boats we are looking at seem to build beefier from the get go as well as redundancy. Now comes the testing to see if these changes last as designed. Certainly new boat design gremlins but SeaWind is working those things out and calls them out when they understand the issues. Awesome.

I don't mean to sound negative and kudos for perceiving everything in a positive light but I hope they offered you something for the hardship and inconvenience. Leopard ("The Broker") sent me a secondary autopilot and is installing it for the ongoing trouble I had with my standard unit due to the shipbuilders garbage installation. A thoughtful sentiment which may save me hardship in future and an appropriate response to the issue.
It’s great that the broker from Leopard took care of you with that secondary autopilot. Having that backup is definitely a smart move. Seawind did the same for us-they installed a second autopilot too. We haven’t had the chance to wire it up yet, but that’s on our to-do list when we get to New Zealand.
It’s all about being ready for whatever the ocean throws at us, right? Here’s to both our boats staying out of trouble from here on. Thanks for the good vibes-looking forward to catching up on the water! 😊😊💪💪

We've done about 2500 miles since the install and everything has been working! Knock on wood. Previously we saw issues after 1300 miles so we believe everything should be good. It was definitely frustrating but we remind ourselves these are first world problems and we are very fortunate to live the life we do. Thank you for watching and commenting!
B-O-A-T, Bring on another thousand, luckily Seawind came to the party and stumped up the repairs of the steering system. Hauling out is ALWAYS a worry, been to many boat yards, all have their challenges, wind, current, depth etc. All part of the fun.

I have to say. It just blows my mind that a brand like Seawind would undersize such a critical system as the steering. I am glad they put a face in front of the issue and owned up to it but your guys lives could and to some extent were put in unnecessary danger because of this undersized steering. What can I say the more I watch these modern designs the more I like my 40 year old boat :) they are lucky to have such patient and understanding customers as yourselves...
Hey, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. We totally get where you’re coming from-steering is critical, no doubt about it. In the early stages of any new model, there’s always a balance to strike between weight, efficiency, and robustness. The goal is to make these boats as fast and agile as possible while ensuring they can withstand the rigors of the sea. Sometimes, that balance needs fine-tuning 😀😀🤣 and Seawind has been proactive in addressing those needs.
You’re right; things could have gone south, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received. These experiences remind us why it’s so important to know your boat inside and out. Honestly, the best boat is the one you own outright, the one you’re completely familiar with, and the one that’s proven to be a trusted companion on many adventures. It sounds like you have one and that’s how we feel about Wanderlust.

Good for Seawind. They earned a lot of respect doing this. Have you followed the Leopard 46 “Liger” and the absolute NIGHTMARE of Warrenty Warranty issues that they have had with MAJOR construction problems. Leopard will barely give them the time of day. Wow Buyer beware. I would stay away from both Leopard and Lagoon. Problems problems. At least Seawinds stands behind their products. Big feather in there cap.
Thank you for recognizing that!! It’s interesting how few understand that building a boat is not at all like building a car on an assembly line. New hulls will have issues and only companies that stay in touch and work with customers can understand and fix problems as they appear. There is no such a thing as model without problems of some sorts, unless the boat stays at the dock most of the time. Crossing oceans you get banged around at high speeds, catamarans feel torsion and pressure in rigging much more than monohulls and the stress on structures is real.
In our case the dagger style rudder was subject of forces that were not clearly understood until a few boats did some serious blue water sailing.
Seawind worked with us and addressed the issue, that’s all we can say. 😊😊😊
of the first 11 with the "old" system do you know where you fell in terms of the refit sequence? So you've done a few thousand miles since?
We were the third boat to get refitted. We were slotted for second but it was logistically impossible. 😊😊 thank a to watching 😊😊

And regarding the design of the rudders? Maybe they create too much effort which causes everything to break including transom mountings; If yes, there'll be always something ( the weak link) wich will break
You’re spot on with the weakest link theory-it’s a reality in engineering that we can’t ignore. Every system has that one point where the stress can tip things over the edge. But I’m happy to say that after thousands of hard miles, both us and other boats with similar setups are holding strong without any issues.
As for the rudder design, you’re right-it does create higher loads, which can push the limits of everything connected to it. But so far, it looks like we’ve found a balance, and the system’s been solid. Thanks for your insight-it’s always good to keep these things in mind when pushing a boat to its limits. I’ve seen several boats from sea wind have issues and Seawind, with the boats I know about, come to the party with a resolution. It’s a small size and it’s anecdotal. But I’m seeing more problems with a major South African builder and a French builder and they both feel like they fight the owners or try to silence them over issues.
Seawind does work to come up with a solution. We’ve heard through the grapevine many other manufacturers don’t so we feel quite fortunate. 😊

As fast as the early hull number, you are correct, we took a risk because we don’t mind being the leaders of the pack!! “Unless you are are the leader of the pack on the dog sled, all you see is the ass if the dog in front of you” 🤣🤣🤣
@@HarborsUnknown Having to do as much hand steering as you did especially across the pacific I for one would have been seriously pissed off. Like someone is gonna pay for screwing over my crossing. Cheap production boats are just that. Cheap and untested, you pay to be their lab rat. If you hadnt had crew on the pacific crossing you would have been destroyed physically over their negligence. Seawind will not get my business in the future. That first design looked like a 12 year old building his first go kart.

Yeah, hand steering across the Pacific wasn’t exactly a dream, but that’s the thing about sailing-it’s not just about the good times; it’s about dealing with the crap that gets thrown at you. We didn’t see our crossing as screwed up; it was more like a gritty reminder of why we do this in the first place.
Sure, the design had its flaws, but those kinds of challenges are what push you to your limits and show you what you’re really made of. And hey, every boat, no matter the brand, goes through its teething pains. We’d rather be out there figuring it out than sitting safe on shore.
So, yeah, it was tough, but that’s what makes the story worth telling. Appreciate your take on it-keeps things real.

Lagoon did similar stuff to keep those people quiet too or at least tried. Whatever floats your boat, hope you have safe travels from here on out. Rudder load can be huge if sailors do not know how to sail properly. This system was made for sailors who know how to keep rudder at 0 when sailing. Most newer sailors use the rudder to point which adds a lot of pressure on the system. When sailing having rudders up would be an easy way to teach sailors how to use the wind and sails so the boat doesn't slide it's port around. This new system will help a lot but the rudders are now the weakest link. I would have a spare rudder. Rudders do break. Again learn how to sail correctly on a catamaran which is different than a monohull a bit.

Sounds like the "Engineers" designed the steering for "Marina Queens" that are good for day sailors. Scary stuff to cross oceans with though that boat flies!!!
😊😊 she does move quite briskly and that was part of the engineering miscalculation. The pressure on those rudders becomes suddenly exponential when you are sailing in the teens. We love it!!!

What iff they didn't have a big crew to hand sreer.
It would have been tough and we would have gone back to Galapagos. But you make a good point. The year we crossed there were a number of boats who lost autopilot. From Joshua Slocum to Vito Dumas, solo sailors have crossed the oceans without autopilot, balancing sails and lashing the tiller. If that is not achievable, at night you hove to and go to bed. Wake up rested and start again.

Having sharp rocks at the entrance to the boat lift slip doesnt make the job any easier ... Posts with floating tyres round would be far kinder esp to grp boats.

Has no one ever suggested that sort of addition.. I see so many docks jetties and warfs for leisure and light working boats and they are all made like industrial stuff with no shielding.. Imagine a carbon hull getting gouged and dragged against raw cast concrete or rocks like these.
It's bad enough if they use old slings..

They are awesome!! Building new catamarans with a new design is not like building a Honda. They are going on uncharted territory of boat building, we as owners chose to take a bit of a risk when buy early hulls but it was comforting to know that they were behind us every step of the way!! So what is the warranty on a seawind
It’s 5 years on the hull. The rest depends on the manufacturer of the part; typically 1-2 years.
So would you buy a second boat from Seawind after your experience thus far?
Definitely!
If boat builders around the world would do their proper development with testing on the water as it is been done by any car developer, then such issues wouldn’t happened. Instead boat builders use their buyers to do such testing in the field, knowing that this can bring the customer in serious dangerous conditions.
😊😊😊 Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from, and I love that you care so much about safety-it’s something we all think about out here. It’d be awesome if boat builders could do the same kind of testing that car companies do, but boats are a different game. Each one’s almost a custom job, made to take on the wild stuff the ocean throws at us.

@@HarborsUnknown just one additional comment: we are talking here about mass production boats. Not single hand crafted versions. I am a automotive supply chain expert. It start with having manufacturing peocess in place which dont allow failors or using supplier parts out of specs (which of corse would need to have a boat supplier to define specs and testing procedures, which again is not the standard today and barely to find at boat builders development or Q departments. I have seen many Cat and Monohull production facilities. There is much to improve. Doesnt matter what company. You name it
I hear you, and you’re right-there’s always room for improvement in boat building. Just to clarify, though, the Seawind 1600 isn’t mass-produced; they only build about two hulls a year until recently and up to three this year. That means each one gets a lot of hands-on attention. It’s not perfect, but for what they’re working with, Seawind is putting out a solid product. Thanks for your insights-appreciate the perspective!
Great episode and thanks for taking us through the steering saga. For future reference, the seizing of the ss316 lock nut is very common if lube is not used and the nut is tightened too fast. It's called galling, the friction actually melts the surface of the threads and when you stop turning it welds the nut and screw together. Use Lanotech or lithium grease to prevent it and use a torque wrench for correct tightening specs. See you in an anchorage somewhere...

It's good to see Seawind come to the party and looked after you. Its even better to hear they are retrofitting at least some of their other 1600's. Other manufactures (even very popular ones) do not enough to nothing once the boat is delivered.

OMG cannot believe boat designers, boat makers, sellers, the entire industry charges high, high prices to the consumer who ends up paying for to be part of the different experiments … And, this is done on the ocean in that life threatening environment! I just had to vent as I think what is happening is criminal abuse of the consumer.

Thank you for watching!! We actually love Seawind, boats are technically difficult products to design and test. When we buy an early design we go in with the knowledge that there may be some issues.
The difference with Seawind is that they are behind their products 💯 %!!
Every time we take to the ocean we take a risk regard the boat we are on, look at what happened with Bayesian 😢😢😢

We really don’t know, we are not engineers but we have to trust Gurit, a company has engineered various components for America’s Cup boats, including steering systems. Only time will tell!! 🤣🤣😊😊🙏🙏

If you’re looking for something that can handle whatever the ocean throws at you, Kraken’s got you covered. But hey, whatever you choose, it’s all about getting out there and living the adventure. @@HarborsUnknown, I agree. I like the Kraken because of its smooth ride through the water. Catamarans glide over the waves, and most modern monohulls skip over them (making them noisy in rough weather), but the Kraken cuts through them due to its weight and hull shape. Not to mention, I can upgrade things like dual autopilots, fuel filtering, etc.

He was being upfront about the root of the issue was how the system was designed undersized, rather than how the parts were manufactured. Ultimately accepting full responsibility!! Seawind, terrible initial design, terrible quality control (pre-delivery)
However they do try to sort out the many problems with their product (especially for you tubers)
Beefing up a steering problem should not have to be addressed after delivery, this could have been a more dangerous design flaw, ie rough seas
I would never ever even contemplate purchasing any Seawind product
Pile of junk, they need to get their act together, big time

I hear you, and I appreciate your concern, but I’ve got to say-Seawind’s construction is far from a pile of junk. Yeah, we had some early issues, but once we got past that, the boat has proven to be solid and reliable. They’ve built a strong, well-crafted vessel that’s taken us through some serious conditions. And when things did need tweaking, Seawind didn’t just walk away-they made sure we were taken care of. In our experience, they stand behind their boats and their customers. Thanks for the good vibes, and here’s to smoother sailing ahead!
If the rudders had been tradition geometry then the system would have been fine it is the use of cassette rudders & their geometry that causes the very high loadings especially with a fast boat!
Thanks for your insight-you’re absolutely right. The dagger-style rudder design offers benefits, like shallow water navigation, reduced drag, and better performance, (especially upwind), and ease of inspection to name a few.
But it also introduces unique challenges as you correctly point out. I believe that the engineers didn’t fully anticipate the exponentially higher forces that come with this type of geometry. If the rudders had been of traditional geometry, the system likely would have handled things just fine. Thanks for pointing that out and for contributing to the conversation!
