      Since our knowledge of livespan of marine life is limited, we could only speculate about the cause(s) by watching what has changed recently. As the sea's are one connected body, it should not surprise that all we put into the water, can be found somewhere. E.G. a recent study showed that persistent UV-blocker, as used in sun cream, and known as harmful for those ecosystems, can even be detected in whitened corals now.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re correct-we’re still learning about marine life and there is a lot of guesswork. Thanks for watching and for your comment. It’s clear that what we put in the water affects ecosystems everywhere, and that study on sunscreen chemicals showing up in corals really drives it home. Appreciate the reminder!

    Thank you for the fascinating National Geographic introduction about coral sea life and its impact on the ecosystem and those who rely on it for their livelihoods and natural resources. I must say, Fabio is truly a culinary master. His passion for food is evident and resonates deeply, perhaps because food has a unique way of bringing people together in both social and personal gatherings.
    I’m eager to return to Tahiti someday. As someone of Polynesian descent from New Zealand, I find our cultures to be very similar in language and history. What wonderful comments you two are getting as you travel with the ocean, appreciating that it cares not a jot that you are there. The gains' being more subtle as you realise the folly.

    I would not worry yourselves or fret when you see coral bleaching events in areas that you were diving around the world ,as corals have shown that they have a real hardiness and ability to cope with such seemingly disastrous occurrences. As you know, Australia is boarded by the Great Barrier Reef in the northeast and west coasts. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) has been worked on by numerous scientists over the last 50 years. A renown scientist called Dr Peter Ridd has been studying the GBR for 40 years and published a number of papers on his research. He correctly counters all that the mainstream media puts out regarding the doom, gloom and ultimate death proposed for our GBR by governments and mainstream media outlets. And when you think about what he is saying he is factually correct that bleaching events are rare, localised and able to renew growth shortly afterwards. I'll put a link to one of his latest videos regarding such claims. The waters on the GBR range between 26º and 28°C and yet in places like Asia and Micronesia corals excel in their growth in 30° plus waters, so clearly, temperature alone is not the only cause. In addition Recent coral events in Australia has been followed by miraculous growth, reaching levels not seen in a long time. Clearly these events are cyclical and possibly more linked to rapid changes in temperature rather than just a 'rise' in temperature as many will posit.
    The link to Peter's recent post. I can't recommend his channel on YT. th-cam.com/video/gs93w1_27m4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUNZHIgcGV0ZXIgcmlkZA%3D%3D

      Thank you for the very knowledgeable explanation!! We are mere observers who were shocked by the difference we saw in the coral one year after our first observation. We truly hope that the coral will bounce back in the Magic Carpet and regain its health as you so eloquently describe in your comment. 😊😊😊

      We don’t. There will be different opinions in the comments. It important that we keep an open mind and respect each other while disagreeing. We are truly concerned about the environment and want to document what we see without bias and prejudice.
      It essential to be able to understand an opposing view by approach it with curiosity, thorough research and engage respectfully.

      Exactly. People love to think that the earth is a "constant". It isn't and never has been. Coral comes and goes. Hard corals die off and soft corals replace them. Unfortunately, the money is made from fear, not commonsense.
