If they did a really advanced fighting and combat system with weapon, specials, combo, etc upgrades along the way, they could keep it interesting. Beat em ups get boring, I get it, but if they added a lot of other engaging systems into it, they could make a modern beat em up great

They really only suffer compared to Sega's best, but everything looks bad when thrown up against the Streets of Rage series until we started getting God of War, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, and Bayonetta .

The PS1 could have done so many arcade-perfect ports of beat 'em ups. It's too bad the industry was so worried about mediocre 3D experiences at the time.
Yikes most of these look terrible! No wonder I have a complete library for both snes and megadrive and only 10 games for the play station. Wicked video though. Saved me some time and money

Yeah! The game started it's development as Streets of Rage 4, but Sega did not want it. The Game always felt like Streets of Rage in 3D to me.
The game also caught my eye. As for the best, check out Urban Chaos (Pc version only)

Wow, the running animation on that last game. And the Xena game looked pretty cool.
Xena was an amazing game. You could say the Chakram mechanic was kind of like a pioneer to the God of War axe.
Him slamming his head in the table was hilarious.
I loved Captain Commando in the arcades, playing with my 3 friends. All four fighting, smashing the buttons for hours.
I also like it a lot, the Super Nintendo version was disappointing, but this one from PS1 is very good.
