BATTLETECH: The Shogun

  • Perhaps one #Battletech #Battlemech that frankly feels out of place, this #StarLeague era #Assaultmech fought for the #WolfsDragoons in the #ClanInvasion and #SuccessionWars across the Inner Sphere, despite the mech originally being from the #TerranHegemony.
Now nearly extinct, save for one #Clan variant, the Shogun may one day be entering the dustbin of history.
    Let's go over it here.
It's not bad. It's just middling.

Even if the mechs as a whole were nothing special, they were up to star League era par. Putting them ahead of technology during the later succession wars, often having better engines and heatsinks. More along the lines of constar mechs rather than house mechs.

Yes, Wolf's Dragoons were Clan... BUT... they were NOT the genetically enhanced breeds. For the most part, the members of Wolf's Dragoons were Freebirth warriors, with a sprinkling of Trueborns. And yes, the Dragoons fielded ALL Star League Era Mechs, including the tech that went into them. Add to this the fact that each, and every one of them were even more highly trained than was Inner Sphere standard, and you get a Merc Unit that surpasses expectations.

@@Alex-pj8nz : Ah, now we get into that whole, 'quality of life' thing. Clanners can expect a 'working life' of around 10 to 15 years, max, before they are rotated to Solahama units. They spend their entire lives centered around combat, and ONLY combat. IS pilots, have 'lives', other than combat. Yeah, if I took an IS kid, from birth, and trained him like a Clanner... He'd end up about as good in the end. But the poor boy would have no life outside of Combat. Plus, the brutal training methods of the Clans is considered 'torture' in the IS.

Hmm, plugged some numbers for SHG-2F (ie the one with the ER-PPC) to convert it to a possible SHG-2G Changes: 17 singles (17) > 15 doubles (30), 2 Tons more LRM ammo (4). The location of the DSH is LT/RT and then 1 in LA/RA. Nice crit padding, lots of ammo. Can fire at long range and use its Jump jets with no worry about heat (-2), and in close where the LRM/ER-PPC/SRM's all converge (Alpha), standing still it over heats by 3 or 4 if walking. If the range closes again, then SRM's and ER-PPC at close range it can once again fire these and jump with no heat issue (-4).
All in all, a 'minor' change to the SHG-2F in the grand scheme, but it becomes a bit of a lord of war... a shogun :p
[BTW - Its tricky to balance but the double Large laser package is interesting for the PPC version, and slapping in a HPPC+Capacitor is amusing too. However as its an assault mech and slow, I felt the 'SHG-2G' is a vastly better balanced mech with an ER-PPC for all ranges and paired long and short range and a most excellent Alpha.]

I like the Shogun :) Its kind of a bigger Crusader. I'm a little surprised that the Dragoons didn't pass on one of theirs to Blackwell INdustries to reverse engineer - its not like it uses anything particularly proprietary, afterall, and BI has shown itself to be quite versatile. Heck, they could improve on it a little by swapping out the PPC for a Large Laser, and add 2 tons of LRM ammunition - makes it easier to manage heat-wise while increasing its battlefield presence.
Though I should note, as a lifetime merc, when it comes to ammo-dependent weapons I rarely take a short unless the roll is 7+

I found out about the Shogun because of the 2015 Battletech Alpha Strike boxed sets. I like it because it was almost unique for being an #1 Jump-Capable, #2 Assault, #3 Missile Boat. That was rare then, and is still rare into the IlClan era.
Its lore is interesting. Its extinct as far as I know. It was one of those saved designs thanks to the Clans handing them over to the Wolf's Dragoons, but unlike the others it was never handed over to Blackwell Industries for mass-production.
Somehow its supposed to be an Urban Combat unit. Its better as a general battlefield unit with a well-rounded assortment of weapons for long, medium, and short-ranged combat. The upgraded Shogun C is an impressive unit with 24 streak Short range missile tubes, 40 long range missile tubes, and a powerful extended range particle projection cannon.

The Shogun is just a little off of being a good mech. Not enough ammo, too much heat. Switch the heat sinks to doubles, and strip out all of the extra heat sinks. Use the 7 tons to add 3 tons of LRM ammo, 1 ton of SRM ammo, and 3 medium lasers. Switch the ER PPC to a normal PPC. Now it can afford to use the LRM and PPC at will. Then it has a decent close ranged punch. Still has a heat problem, but it is manageable.

It is not one of the most unfortunate designs, but it is clearly improvable. The LRMs on your arms are not a problem, because with the quirk you have, you're really going to use them to get close and then they work perfectly well for you to hit. The ERPPC is already more questionable, it does allow its use at any distance, although the scarce ammunition of SRM is over (the replacement PPC is already much more questionable).
Honestly a Large Laser in the central torso would be more advisable (or two in the case of clans with double heatsinks) from the moment it could continue to be used until if it loses both torsos, remaining a threat until it is completely destroyed.

You could do more with the CRD in many of its variants, for less weight and money, especially the 2R model, which has no heat issues, and the 5M, which is the best confluence of CRD maneuverability and payload delivery of the classic Era, even if the flamer and machine guns could best be swapped for more ammo.

Seems like if you just upgraded to double heat sinks, you could make the mech much more effective. Up them to doubles, drop 5 of them, and you could fire all your long range weapons(even if you use the ERPPC version) without getting too hot while gaining 5 tons of space. Add a couple tons of LRM ammo for long range fights, then add a trio of medium lasers for some extra up close punch. You could even go with ER versions of the med lasers and 12 sinks would still be enough to let it fire all it's close range weapons without building up too much heat as long as it's not also jumping continually.

It seems okay to me, you jump and potshkt with the PPC while closing distance and only use the lrms when you have a good hit chance, or vice versa if you care more about heat than ammo. Punches are fine with LRM arms since you wont be firing those in melee and theres a good chance you would have used the ammo by that time anyways. Torso SRM6s are a fine weapon and compliment a PPC well to exploit the armor breaches it can make

Hmm. I don't know how someone could "rescue" this Mech, when it would be in MW5.
Maybe refit the PPC with a Large Pulse Laser or 3 ER Med Laser, so the missing Tons can be reused für Heatsinks., also make them double would be a wise decission.
But it would still be a Missile Boat with not enough Ammo for the Main Weapons.
Another Possibility would be switching the Arms with something more usefull, maybe omni Technology would be the solution for the Arms... but than it wouldn't be a Shogun anymore right? :D
When I'm at this theme, weren't there any "Bastard Mechs" like Pirates would use them in Battletech? You know, some kind of Mixed Tech Mashines, basing on something but have Parts from some other Mechs? Would be interesting to know about them too. ^^

So, in the first image, it doesn't have the two srm racks. It has a singular toob that looks like a gauss weapon. Am I reading that image right?
Obvious upgrade would be to use double heat sinks but let's go crazy: replace both srm missile racks with one gauss rifle, two tons of ammunition, and a Case for it. I want to change one of missile systems inside a fist into something else but I'm having trouble choosing; two pulse medium lasers or three to four pulse small lasers. Dump the SRMs, upgrade the LRMs to clan LRM20s and maybe a third LRM20 with more ammo, and upgrade to DHS and you'd have a decent long range fire support mech. • @Cbabilon675
    @Cbabilon675 ปีที่แล้ว

Me personally when I have played BattleTech in the past I actually rebuilt a lot of the 20 toners in the 25 toners for the simple fact is Clan Weaponry with blast through the armor with no problem. As far as I'm concerned if they can survive a direct hit from a clan Erp PC to the center torso and still function then they were all right with me. Hence why I believe that the wasp, stinger, and even the Locust should have been 25 tons, and no less. Not to mention they're a lot more fun to build.

Why would ANYONE do this? Can’t fire it’s PPC sustainably, and can’t fire it’s LRM systems sustainably. It’s slow. What is the point?
Design fixes: personally, I think this is a good candidate for AC systems. Stick two rapid firing AC/5s (even 10s, weight permitting) on the arms, and put LRMs in the torso; 10s or even 5s. I’d not put the LRMs on the arms and build the mech around that because we already have a catapult at home.
However, with its jump capability, such a loadout does make it possible to hop into a rear arc and put AC holes into the rear armour of a mech that thinks it caught it out.
But to be honest, there are better candidates out there for this. Shame really, I actually think it’s quite cool looking, aesthetically. But it isn’t an LRM boat with that ammo loadout (SRMs? Why? Why are you that close to the enemy?) and it cannot fire that PPC often enough for there to be any real point fitting it to the bloody thing in the first place.
If I could, I’d punch the designers, right in the face.

Off the production line this mech seems mediocre like you said but...If i had this mech in Mechwarrior 5 i could make it into a brawling monster. Aside from the torso energy mount over a ballistic one its built just like an Orion with 10 extra tons you can dedicate to more tons of ammo/heatsinks and a bigger engine/supercharger. Or just say screw it and give the 10 tons to hardened armor. that being said i like giving attention to bad mechs but there are certainly better options for heavily armored SRM platforms. at least ones with slightly better quirks anyways.
