    I fell in love with this thing the second I heard of it. It's just such a simple, miniaturized version of the CRB that it actually somehow works.
    I like that in-universe it's not meant to be cutting edge and even has utility purposes beyond just being a mech. Makes it feel a lot more fleshed out and like it has a place in the universe instead of just being "this is a very good mech and it goes pew pew" like a lot of Clan designs

Son Hoa is also interesting because it became independent in the Dark Age and is selling everything to anbody who will buy in the middle of Steiner space. I love it.

  • @Chromevod
    @Chromevod 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I like it. It feels more closely related to its 50-ton cousin than its 100-ton patriarch. Both the energy weapon loadout and easy to maintain quirk makes it similarly as attractive as the regular crab. With the speed and maneuverability, it seems like it would work either as a scout or a screening unit for its larger relatives as well.

      It's a perfect low budget garrison mech, leave lances of them at whatever outpost they'll be operating from to train and master the local terrain while helping develop the facilities, then when it comes time to defend the planet the Lance can function as the scouts and local liaisons to the properly armed regular units that arrive to execute the main battles. That takes advantage of how flexible and easy to integrate they are without creating a situation where their utility functions are never used and their modest combat potential is overtaxed because they're being used as front line mechs.

  • @tenchraven
    @tenchraven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Of all the Dark Age/Republic era mechs, this is probably my favorite. Small, cheap, a less able version could have been made in 3025 (DHS is the only LosTech you really need) and the fact the lore includes rings for slinging loads and the claws can grab pallets makes this a wonderfully complete mech in an setting where a lot of designs don't seem realistically thought out. Militia, mercs and guerillas all like it. As far as how to make it "more aggressive", in it's era ClanTech (🤢) is available, and you've got the sinking to manage CERMLs. Even with a markup for that them, it is pretty cheap as it becomes the crab that eats bugs.

  • @Chris_Sizemore
    @Chris_Sizemore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So a 75 ton crab to finish the cycle? Standard 300 Vlar engine to give it the standard 4/6 movement and keep it cheap. Endo Steel frame because we need some weight savings. 10 double heat sinks because its cheap and super efficient. 2 light PPCs in the claws. 2 more medium pulse lasers in the torso. Triple Strength Myomer, enough small pulse lasers to make an elemental cry. Call it the Crab Boil, because it runs hot! Pilots entire goal is to close to keep the TS Myomer burning and get into melee. Even without a weapon mod this drops two 15 damage punches on the melee table. That is a 1/3rd chance to heat shot a mech every round. Use all the extra weight to pile on armor.

      Made probably too many variants of it, too. The original version had a LAC/2 and LPPC, while the second version had a bit better of a loadout (in-universe, I wrote it up as the designers originally not having any actual Mechwarriors on the design team lol)

Half will be used to replace aging bug mechs in the recon lances. Half will be used for home base defense, which makes them heavy loaders that can become fast defense 'mechs that can quickly move to meet attackers and fight until the hanger kings and heavy armor arrive. I feel like this design might've benefitted from a variant that included a flamer or machine gun. Twin medium lasers will cut up lights and vehicles like seabed carrion, but something to dissuade infantry could round out the package.
    Still, an appreciable design and a lovely addition to the crab mech family.

      I don't know, the art looks like the arms can reach low enough to slice through infantry en masse. Mind you, that's a fluff thing, not something that would be represented in tabletop.

      I'd consider it a side or diagonal grade. You lose 12 KPH, an entertainment system built in (the things you learn on Sarna), jump finesse, and some scouting utility, but you get cargo tech utility, an actual ejection system, armor, twice the cooling, better firepower, and you shed 5 tons.

    Having no ammo dependancy, especially in a post HPG network era would be a HUGE advantage.
    Also consider that this is a post succession wars era design as well, I bet a lot of generals fear the idea of all their fancy toys becoming lostech once again and would love something like the Hermit Crab that's easily understood and reproducible. I'd stake my reputation on it, in 250 years when the Illclan blows over and we get another war of succession this design will become the new flea.
