    I trained as a tank loader and gunning on the M60a1 with the 105 mm gun and was in the 3/11 th ACR in Bad Hersfeldt Germany from 1980 to 1983 , needles to say we did ALOT of gunnery. With a good crew you could put out a tremendous amount of very accurate fire power . We called it suction loading . With a round in the breach and one more already being held ,when the fire command " GUNNER SABO TANK " was heard and the gunner said " IDENTIFIED " I'd use the tip of the SABO round to place the weapon on fire and yell " UP " when the cannon was fired it would recoil and spit out the caseing , which was a very violent act , I used the tip of the new Sabo round to nock the fired case down , set the new round on the now open breach and let the guns own movement slam home the new round , then immediately grab the next round ( from the sweet spot ) then use the tip of the Sabo round to put the cannon on fire 🔥 and yelling " UP ! We carried mostly SABA rounds . With about a 3rd being HEAT rounds plus 6 white phosphorus. The SABO rounds were relatively light and the heat rounds were harder to load . It was a good workout . We would have destroyed ALOT of russian tanks in the Fulda gap , that's fer sure . Personally though I would have rather faught on my feet . I always felt that we should have had more infantry support . Being Cavalry we had scout squads 3 platoons per troop 6 ITV,s and 4 deuce mortars . Our Squadron had alot of tanks with a full tank company , M 109 gun howitzers, engineers and ADA added not to mention 3 Cavalry troops . Alot of firepower !

    One WW2 British tank ace was killed during a hang fire incident, in a Firefly. The cartridge went off as it was being removed from the breech, hitting him in the chest. Fortunately, he'd ordered his crew out of the tank and was dealing with the predicament alone.

      When I was stationed in Korea, I had the privilege of crewing on an M60A3 (I was a scout assigned to a tank Battalion). I was allowed to load and fire a few training rounds on a pre-Qualification table, Table 7. The old M60 had a huge turret and loading was pretty easy with the 105mm rounds. As Scouts, we also acted as spotters on the tank crew Table 8 (crew qualification). We would confirm whether or not the crew had hit a target or missed, and radio it in to the observation tower and Battalion Master Gunner. On occasion the crew would have a misfire and was instructed to rotate the round 180 degrees. To which we would promptly yell on the radio, "pointy end first!", (at least when the Colonel wasn't around, lol).

    Since they weren't using the ballistic computer, it was a little weird that dropping their lead wasn't a step in the fire mission. I had it drilled into me over and over; the second you pull the trigger, drop your lead so the computer can calculate the solution for the next target.

      You guys used the same ammunition as Us in the M 60 as1 and a3 . The 105 mm Sabo , Heat and WP or smoke . About 3/ 4 being SABO the rest HEAT minus the 6 WP ( they were for anti ATGM, s ) but our main adversary would be T 72, T 62 and T55,s so we mostly trained with Sabo. Our battle positions were in draws from the Fulda Valley about 1 terrain feature west of the Iron curtain , just below the military crest on the west sides , we planned on shooting up the russians as they advanced westward in the valley. Our scouts screened us to our rear but I always felt we needed more infantry . I'm sure the Bundesweir would be deployed with us but we never trained with them . I ended up as a driver and that was very challenging driving in that terrain. , ESPECIALLY IN WINTER . I never once threw track though , thats probably why they kept me as driver .

    So there's no extractor or ejector? And did the loader REALLY have to use a block of wood to get the round into the breech? Slamming it home without putting your fingers in harm's way wouldn't work?

    • @minuteman4199
      @minuteman4199 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a semi automatic breach. You have to open it manually to load the first time, then when you fire it the breach block opens the empty ejects and it stays open until you load the next round, slamming the next round into the breach trips it closed. You make a fist to push the round in and the breach block pushes it out of the way as it slams shut. Using the piece of wood is just a modern "we don't want to be responsible for any missing fingers" thing.
