I have the exact same KitchenAid range. I don't want to try and pry those bezels off and risk breaking them. Instead I think I'll use a Dremel or electric hot knife to make the hole bigger on the safety cover
I chose to stick the cover to the stove, and found it useful to have the full area on the safety cover to stick to the stove. Your solution would make that harder… but let us know how it goes! If you take the prying off slowly I don’t think the risk of breaking is high, but I understand your concern.

When removing adhesive, use a hairdryer on heat setting to ease removal.
