Introducing the all-new Rivet Counter HO Scale SD38-2. Built by EMD from November of 1972 through June of 1979, the SD38-2 was essentially the six-axle version of the smaller GP38-2 that featured numerous electronic upgrades. Designed for slow, heavy-haul freight operations, EMD hoped that the higher tractive effort and electrical upgrades in -2 line would attract more buyers than the predecessor SD38, which only sold 53 units to North American railroads.
Unfortunately, the newer model fared only marginally better with a total of 90 units being sold worldwide. Although sales were less than anticipated, the SD38-2 proved to be a reliable workhorse with many of these locomotives remaining in hump yard or local service today.
Our Rivet Counter series SD38-2 is the definitive HO Scale model of EMD’s unique non-turbocharged six-axle locomotive. Our model combines smooth operating performance with unparalleled railroad, road number, and era-specific details. Not to mention, Rivet Counter models come equipped with industry-leading LED lighting features right out of the box.
Today, we’re taking a closer look at two pre-production samples: Southern Pacific Railroad and Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway.
In addition, we're also offering the following roadnames in this run:
    • BC Hydro
    • Frisco
    • Louisville & Nashville
    • Yankeetown Docks
We plan to offer many more versions in the near future, but for now, these first-run roadnames would be right at home on just about any layout, handling heavy switching and drag road duty, just like their 1:1 counterparts. Delivery for our first run is expected in summer of 2022.

Very logical model to produce as it can use the same mechanism as your SD40-2. As far as doing a four axle unit (I read below that you are announcing on in late January 2022) a good choice would be the EMD GP30. Variations in cabs (or no cabs), low and hi short hoods, Blomberg or AAR B trucks (and different journals on the Blomberg trucks), etc.

Can’t wait to buy one of these locomotives! Especially BC Hydro since they were the predecessor to the SRY Rail Link of the lower mainland that I also live in! Hope to get these soon but it’ll most likely be a hassle trying to find one that fits my needs, especially since starting out I have DC and DC operation is now becoming obsolete

With Scale Trains serious and accurate attention to detail in their rivet counter series is impressive, there is one flaw that is noticeable to those with discerning protypical eyes. The brake cylinders in the pre-production models in this video show the engine brakes in the set position (indicated by the brake cylinder piston extended), while the brake rigging are shown to be in the release position (brake shoes are clear of the drivers). For many this may not be a problem for them, but for some who want to pay premium $$$ for one of these units it can be.

I know these are pre-production models, but is the omission of the walkway tread directly out from the nose on the front "porch" intentional, or just yet to be tooled/installed? I haven't been around enough of them to know if they were actually slick on that part of the deck or not.
