Just built a slat fence in my garden using your methods. Thank you for the detailed explanations! My neighbors think I'm some sort of handy-dude now! :)
How did you secure the posts to the ground? I love this idea. I'm trying to come up with something that would give provide privacy from my neighbors on one side who hate my dog. I think this would be perfect, but I don't have existing posts to attach it to. I bought some 4X6 trellises, but they were expensive, and I don't know how well they'll hold up.
@@novelist99 I used Simpson Strong Tie EZ Bases to secure new posts to existing concrete. It's not as sturdy as I had hoped because I didnt have anything else to anchor them to on the sides. But its still standing 2 years later!
YOU SIR, JUST MADE MY DREAM COME TRUE!!! I wanted a privacy screen railing that was simple. You gave me that. AND MORE! i I HAVE A HOBBIT HOUSE. IT NEEDS SOME FROU FROU. So, i can do my art work and paint roses on a panel of wood, WHICH I CAN SLIP IN AND OUT OF THE SLOTS IN THE POST AND MAKE THE MIDDLE PANEL OF WOOD OUT OF PLYWOOD SO IT CAN HOLD A MURAL. I don't know if i am describing this correctly so that you can understand what you did for me with your simple construction idea. But now, if need be, i can refresh my art work every year or easily change the motif with another panel with a differant design on it. i have been thinking for weeks how to construct an 'optional' private deck railing. AND YOU JUST HANDED ME A MIRACLE!!! IT MUST BE TOUGH BEING A GENIUS!!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH.
I love the simplicity of the design and ease of construction. It’s beautiful and brilliant. I love your channel. I’m going to try this myself. I have a redbud tree that blocks the view of my backyard during the growing season but I’m at the mercy of the parking lot behind my house in the winter. This is a perfect solution. Thanks!!
Like your idea, sharing it with my hubby. We want to make a privacy screen for our daughter, and this looks like a good design choice . Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!! I've watched so many videos about privacy fences. Really simple and functional. I'm thinking to modify it slightly to accept another slat on the inside that would alternate with the gap, creating airflow, but more privacy. If you have any thoughts about that I would like to hear about them.
My husband and I did this project and we love it. Gives us and our neighbor more privacy. We also did natural light wood against black rails. Thank you for sharing your DIY!
Such a fantastic design. Definitely attainable for a novice like myself. I've been looking for a way to extend the height of our fences to keep two kittens safe and this looks absolutely perfect. Thank you so much for such a detailed yet short tutorial. Much appreciated. New subbie here.
I love this idea. I have urban deer and I was looking for a pretty idea to block their view during growing season but also something flexible if I need to have access more than a tiny gate will allow! Oh, how I wish lumber weren't so crazy expensive in this economy right now.
Amazing curious with the way the economy is now with lumber .. if you're able to list the supplies would be great also a lil info on how you installed to the concrete ty
Things are definitely more expensive now than when I made the video. It's been a while since I put this together, and I'd pretty much have to make a supply list by watching the video and seeing what's available (and reasonable) in the stores. None of the frames went into concrete - just the wooden posts or the frame of the house.
dude, your channel has exploded! I think you had like 1000 subs the last time I checked in. Nice work! Hopefully making some decent revenue by this point!
This might look good in your mind's eye, but think twice before trying it in the real world. A neighbor built one of these in Western North Carolina using 2x10 (or thereabouts) southern yellow pine lumber as slats. I haven't measured the length of the slats, but they are in the 12 ft. range. Within a few weeks they were warping in all sorts of interesting, if unsightly and embarrassing, ways. The cups, bows, and crowns in the slats increased over the first few months and have persisted in dynamic motion since then, in some cases threatening to escape the containment channels. It would probably make a very cool super slo-mo video, but if that's not what you have in mind choose a different style of fence unless your slats are impervious to warping.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Differences in climate might account for different results. The Carolinas get about the same rainfall as you in BC, but our summers are steamy, not dry. A new development on the neighbor's fence. Last week (2nd winter) one of the vertical channel posts split lengthwise, possibly due to ice buildup in the channels, spilling the adjacent sections of slats. BTW, I enjoy your channel. My success with propagation via cuttings has improved significantly thanks to your videos.
This is genius!! My patio doesn’t have wooden beams like this. I have alumawood. Will I be able to screw the channels into the alumawood and not damage it?
I've never worked with alumawood, but from what I can see, some sources recommend you avoid drilling holes in it if you can. I might look at or research whether construction adhesive would be a good alternative.
This look incredible. I love this and it does look like a simple enough project even for someone who is a novice. I would like to hope that you can answer if a side board needs to be attached if attaching to your house? Then add the channel you would slide your boards into?
With more difficulty! I did a project or two on this channel where I screwed into metal posts. Pre-drill a pilot hole and use a self-tapping screw would be my starting point, but I'm no expert. Happily, the rails probably only need 3 or 4 attachment points each.
Can I ask what are the dimensions for the slats? I saw 1x2 and 2x3 for the channel, but am not sure about the slats. It looks like cedar. My back porch has the posts just like this and it is perfect for what I need. Thanks!
As I recall they're around a 1x5, but really that was just the most convenient size at the hardware store at the time, and you could build the side rails to fit whichever size you end up using.
is that pressure treated? I totally want to replicate this design, but am worried about using non-treated wood, we get a fair bit of rain and my deck is very exposed
Thanks Jordyn. We're about an hour east of Vancouver BC on Nicomen Island (just technically an island, we're connected to everything by roads and bridges). The views, depending on the direction I have the camera pointing are: Sumas Mountain, Nicomen Mountain and Dewdney Peak.
We just used a long screw through the back of the railing and into the frame of the house. It compressed the vinyl siding a little, but we stopped when it was fairy even and not too tight.

Very much my pleasure Tiffany. Sounds like a great project - and I wish you best of luck with it!
Wow, beautiful job and terrific privacy screen!
Nice job! We can’t afford lumber here in the US 😂
Right!

😂😂
Right it's getting too costly 🤣
Exactly. So we have to order those privacy screens from Amazon. To create ours.
You made my day this is something I want to do that takes away from the ordinary dog eared fencing. Thank you for sharing this design.
Ooooo! Great design and I love the black against the natural wood - looks very sharp and gives vital privacy.

Easiest privacy screen/fence video out!! Thanks

What a wonderful idea! It looks great!
I am definitely installing this in my yard next spring. Thank you!!!
Happy to hear it. You're welcome
Wow, that looks very nice and wood fit just about any design theme.😊
Absolutely ingenious, I love it, thank you for sharing

Omg you made that look super easy. I'm going to make an attempt to do this over the weekend thanks for showing this.
My pleasure and best luck with your project!

Wow, great idea! I love it. I’m off to Lowes! 😊
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing… this is exactly what I need .
Lovely idea! Seems simple enough 😁
That simple enough. Thanks for posting
I LOVE your privacy screen. I’ve been looking around at different ideas and I think I might be able to adapt your design to fit under my deck. :-)
that is what I was thinking. I want to cover the space but still be able to access it on occasion. Did you do it? I would love to see pics if you did.
Thanks for sharing,I was just looking for something like that
Super cute!!!
An amazing idea congrats 🥳 for your new space enjoy
Love the way that looks!
Thank you for sharing this idea! My hubby’s honey do list just got longer 😅
Well done!
Looks good and easy to do. Thanks.
This I exactly what I was looking for

You're so right - my jaw almost hit the floor at the hardware store the other day.
Nice job with the design and execution. The finished project looks great!
Nice Patio! Wish I had one.

Could you do this without the spacers to have complete privacy?
I suppose you could!
Great idea; nice! 👍

Thanks Morgan. This spring was very good for gardening channels I think. BTW, I love what you're doing with drought tolerant plants!
Love the design and ease of project. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t have any house posts in my patio area. Can this be setup without posts support?
This might look good in your mind's eye, but think twice before trying it in the real world. Thanks for the warning Michael. I haven't had any problem with warping yet, but something to look out for.

Have the horizontal boards warped out of plumb at all after 3y?
No, they're still pretty good. These were treated boards and they're kept relatively dry
very nice!
Very nice

I assemble the channel and then attached it directly to the house with no additional side board. I guess it depends on the construction of your house.
Nicely done sir, how about termites don't you have a problem with termites there? Don't they eat rose's roots as well?
Not really. They're far more common in warmer climates
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you!
Looks beautiful! So how is this done when you have iron posts? Any suggestions? Thanks

Beautiful!! How did you attach the channel to the siding of the house?
I put long screws through to the frame, and then just tightened until it was snug against the siding.
Great !!!!!
Muy bien resuelto
Gracias
Thanks
My pleasure.
Love this!!!!
Thanks Jami
Brilliant!!
Hello,
Planning on doing this, this weekend, do I screw right into the siding?
I went through the siding and into the stud behind it. Your situation may vary, but that's what I did.
Great Job! what size screws did you use?
Love this look! We want to install with zero spacing (board on board) do you have any thoughts on problems this could create? Thanks
Hi Sandra. Not really - should work fine.
Nice! have you experience any warping
No. The boards are treated and also under the cover of the house - they've held up beautifully so far
For the side panels, the tiny bottom piece, holds the weight of all the boards?
So far so good!
I've heard good feedback about the Woodglut plans.

I want to do this at my apartment. I’m on the bottom level and they didn’t put rails around the patio
Good Job ! Love it !

Yes, the boards were treated.
Where do you live? Gorgeous property and views!

I see. I’m in Oregon. Thank you! I’ll have to visit that area next time I’m in BC!
thanks this is simple and what i need #perfect
How did you install the black rail on the post of the house ? So that it sticks?
I used screws.
What kind of board and size did you use?
Treated decking boards. They were just what's available at the local building center, and were roughly 1 x 5
Hello excellent design i just have a question where did you get the panels what dimensions are they?
Thanks Kathie. I bought all the lumber at Home Depot.
Thanks for letting me know
What kind of rail is that? When I type in Black rail Google just shows me a picture of a bird!
I show how I assembled it in the video. It's a DIY project.
👍
How do you install the rail on the siding of the house?
We just used a long screw through the back of the railing and into the frame of the house. It compressed the vinyl siding a little, but we stopped when it was fairy even and not too tight.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you!
Do you have any dogs on the property?
Just one - she makes a very small cameo in the video at around 3:35
Very good presentation! For the slats, what kind of wood did you use and their dimensions (mostly concerned about the thickness). Thanks!
I just checked and it's just over 1" (maybe 1 1/16th or 27mm), so I guess the nominal size would be 5/4.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks so much!
Did you use nails to hold all the boards or how did they stay in place
They're loose stacked in the end slots with spacers. No need for nails or other fasteners.
Hi great video! Question did you use pressure treated wood for the screen planks or did you varnish them? Also what type of wood did you use? Thanks!
ever hear back?
How did you use to attached to the siding of the house?
Through the backing of the rail using longer screws - straight through the siding and into the frame of the house beneath it.
👌👌👏👏
