I have hundreds of playlists based on weekly music charts in my iTunes. I have an old iPhone that I transfer them onto. Charts from local radio stations here in Vancouver as well as from the RPM charts which are Canada wide. Like Billboard. From the late 50s until 2000.

I also have stuck with iTunes. When tagging, I drop the second number in the "Year" field e.g. I change "1967" to "167". That leaves a space to put a final number in for the year to get the chronology correct. So "Sgt Pepper" becomes "1671" and "Magical Mystery Tour" "1672". Works fine after 2000 (as I don't imagine I'll around for 2100!) as well. I also make the "Genre" field "Studio Album" or "Bonus Track" or "Live Album". That way you can quickly narrow searches down to just albums, bonus tracks or both. Bonus tracks are where all the curating fun is as you collect and add all the non-album tracks for an artist and assign them to a particular album etc.

I have a very, very large music CD collection and yes Andrew, I still use iTunes. Apple seems proud that they are no longer backing the software and moved on to Apple Music. It's interesting that if I were still a Windows user, iTunes is still supported. I will no longer go back to Windows; but good for them that iTunes is still supported. Great video and nice to see someone else that finds iTunes still necessary.

This is a great series Andrew, looking forward to part two. I also use I-Tunes to rip my CD's and for downloads to play on my PC and my notebook. (downsized from my bulky laptop to a more handy sized notebook for when I'm on the move) And my personal music player is my I-Pod, yes I am that one guy who still uses an I-Pod. You are quite right, I find I can do so much with my I-Tunes Library, with playlists and how I want to present my collection. I even have it on file on my Brennan JB7 player, but that is due for an upgrade in the near future. My digital library is great for me as I can take it anywhere, my ripped CD's of the BOTR 50th anniversary set sound fantastic on it. But my real love format wise will always be vinyl. There's something about putting that needle on the record and sitting back that I love.

Oh yes, loosing personal digital data is the most unwanted effect of hardware/software crashes. I would gladly pay those 100 quid for a professional restoration if, in my case, I were asked to. The price I was told was much-MUCH higher.... Happened to me twice, but fortunately that affected only the audio/video collection that I was able to restore (not such a pleasant process though). After that, I decided to 3x backup everything. Your scheme looks very impressive and quite reliable.
These days, I am moving my data to SSD drives. They are not cheap but do offer a higher speed of data transfer without mechanical units involved, which is always the weak spot in regular hard drives. The drawback of SSD is their limited number of read/write cycle (approx. 10,000), but honestly I will not be able to reach that number 🙂 After all, I am ready to regularly backup my data again, like once in 2-3 years I hope to add a new set of drives, so that I always have a fresh and a few old sets.
Thank you for your videos and take care!

Great video Andrew - I used to use iTunes a lot when I was on Windows, but then moved over to using Plex as my local music server when I moved to Mac as Apple Music app just isn’t as good as the old iTunes app. Just an FYI as well, I believe they are phasing out iTunes on windows too and trying to get people to replace with a new Apple Music app for Windows so just be careful when updating.
Great points about using the sort titles - so annoying when you have two albums from the same year and can’t get them in the correct order! Or when you have singles mixed in with albums and want them in proper release date. Looking forward to the next episode 👍🏻

Love this video Andrew!!! Although I was distracted by your Housemartins album behind you-absolutely love that band! I. know this is probably a stupid question, but, what do you feel is the difference from let's say the Red Album ripped lossless and playing a Hi-Res Lossless version from Apple Music? Is the audio quality the same, and is it just for the collectability of the disc, or is there a different sound, even when played through a high quality hi-fi set up? Thanks and thanks for all that you do.

    • @AndrewDixonMusic

Thank you! Technically there is a difference between hi Res lossless and CD, as hi Res will have a lot more info. Whether your equipment and ears will allow you to pin point the differences is for you to decide, but yes, in theory the hi Res is better.

Hi Andrew. Have you ever thought / tried about ripping some of your vinyl collection? I know if you want to listen to vinyl you want the ritual of putting the record down on the tuntable and actually listen to it on vinyl. I've done this for certain records as sometimes the mix / mastering would be different on vinyl then say a CD and or download. :)

Hi Andrew, how are you connecting iTunes to your amp? From what I can gather, Airplay can be lossy and Bluetooth, I believe, is definitely lossy. If hires audio files/formats are a primary consideration (which I presume they are given the resolution of the rips), then a wired connection might be the best way of delivering the full spectrum of sound?

I keep on stumbling onto years old videos, so it's nice to see this one is only a day old. lol.
I'd like to see you talk about Music Media Helper, I already use EAC (in the form of DBPowertools) and MakeMKV to rip my DVDs/BluRays, but are you ripping audio as individual tracks (presumably from a music DVD playing like a CD but with music videos/other visuals) or are you having to cut them out of the larger video file? I'd love to rip the songs from a bunch of Disney films as you never get all the good ones on the CDs.
That's a neat idea adding the date on the "Album Sort" field, I'll have to try that with my CDs, as I'm currently going through re-ripping all of my CDs in Lossless (DBPowertools rips it as ALAC and FLAC at the same time on my current settings).

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

DVD and Blu Ray discs can be ripped to individual tracks if that's how they've been configured on the disc. If they haven't then it can be necessary to split the songs "manually" after ripping.

Hi, I'm sure I can cover some of that. First of all, do you have your laptop connected to a decent system to play the files on if you download them, rather than playing through laptop speakers?

Just play the disc instead of spending hours transferring them. They are meant to be played after all!
