  • In this video, Cheston Farley so beautifully demonstrates how to perform a yearly inspection on a fire extinguisher at BYU-Idaho. Isn't his voice angelic?

    I'm ashamed of how long it took me to understand these annual inspections were for extinguishers in businesses and commercial buildings.

    • @alvagood2693
      @alvagood2693 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the gauge is not a threaded type gauge and only retained by a wire clip then all it takes is to turn the gauge in any direction which can possibly cause it to then lose pressure.

      This is only the annual. Every 6 years you WILL need a professional to replace the media inside the tank. Every 12 years a cylinder test is required.

    • @marclee2453
      @marclee2453 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It has to be performed by someone permitted annually. You can't perform maintenance on your own and after watching this video it is now crystal clear why that is the case. In a millisecond he should have pulled that extinguisher from service.

    Did you check the date of manufacture or last hydro/6 year date? Did you actually blow out the hose? Was the label lined up with the gauge? Did you document the date of the extinguisher and serial number? As a licensed fire extinguisher tech I would not have passed this fire extinguisher.

    I would not have passed this extinguisher. The gauge should be aligned with the nameplate right in the middle just like when it is new. Whoever rebuilt this extinguisher might have used the wrong o ring and that’s why it’s off.

    Question for the professionals with a hydro test. I understand it is every 12 years off manufacturers date but let’s say a new 2008 fx that wasn’t 6 year maintenanced u til 2017 for some reason. Would you still do the hydro test in 2020 or 6 years after the first 6 year maintenance in 2023?

    • @marclee2453
      @marclee2453 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. There is no wavering on 12 year hydro test

    • @charlesk1140
      @charlesk1140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you would still have to do the Hydrotest in 2020. Usually what I do for customers in cases like this is if its within two years I will go ahead and hydrotest it so they dont have to pay twice. For example if the FE was new in 2008 and nothing was done to it until 2019 (assuming the FE is in good condition) then I would go ahead and perform the hydrotest on it(1 year early). If I only did the 6yr then the customer would then have to pay AGAIN for the recharge and hydrotest the next year. By going ahead and doing the hydrotest on it in 19 it saves the customer from basically having to pay twice in back to back years for the recharge. Also, doing this would also change the 12 year hydrotest cycle for the FE. The new test dates would now be the 6yr maint. test would now be due in 2025 and the 12yr hydrotest now due in 2031.

    There is no requirement to 'fluff' the extinguisher. The powder inside has been specifically designed to not pack down, even after many years of being in service. Additionally, flipping a pressurized vessel upside-down can be dangerous if it slips and falls, not to mention hitting it with anything. Manufacturers have released many statements saying the practice of fluffing the extinguishers is not recommended.

    Zip Tie?! I believe you mean “Tamper Seal”... Even if you understand it isn’t an actual zip tie, you should be careful not to cause confusion to anyone watching this video that is unfamiliar with fire extinguisher service & Safety.

    • @alvagood2693
      @alvagood2693 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had a customer that would install zip ties rather than contact us to service the unit so they could save money. OSHA cited them for each extinguisher they had put zip ties on. Prior to OSHA, the local AHJ had contacted us as to why we were using zip ties instead of tamper seals. Myself and the AHJ met with the district manager of the company. I informed the district manager that I was obligated to remove our tags from the zip tie units. I had a hand held digital scale attached to the pull pin and the scale registered 27 pounds of pull before the zip tie broke. The district manager authorized our firm to correctly service every store in her district. Two days later the main office authorized us to provide service in everyone of their stores in the state and to be the ones to provide new Class K extinguishers rather than the stores provide them due to gauge damage from being shipped horizontal instead of vertical.

  • @jayhouse345

    Great video. You only missed two things. 1st, NFPA 10 - 7.3.2.2 says the tamper seal shall be removed by operating the pull pin. You removed the tamper by hand then operated the pull pin. 2nd, you forgot to weigh it.
    Other than that great video.

    False information, each particle is pressurized preventing packing. inverting, pounding on the bottom can cause the chemical to enter the pressure gauge to the point of preventing the internal pressure to correctly be indicated at the gauge thus showing full pressure in the extinguisher, or no pressure at all. Manufacturers of extinguishers have issued bulletins about this practice.

    So many mistakes done by the technician. NO ONE should only visually inspect the tank and the hose, turn it up side down for a minute, throw a new tag on and claim it passed. Why didn't you discharge it? Why didn't you wash the tank? Why didn't you use an air gun, pressure clean the inside of the tank and inspect the inside with a light? Why did you not inspect the o-ring's?
    Please, no one just do what this guy did and think that the tank is passed with safety. This must of been a joke video!
