    As a dutchie who used to work in a zoo you need a big restaurant near the entrance with a big terrace.. the souvenir shop and restaurant both makes good revenue for the zoo.. also I love the bike parking :p

    I'm from the US. And when I went to my city zoo as a kid there was a white tiger habitat and it broke my heart. It sat in the middle of path ways and was so small it had enough room to walk a few paces and lay down. That was it. And all that was separating the tiger from us was a chain link fence.

    As a child, I have been to Blijdorp a million times. I always loved the entrance area with the African penguins and flamingoes. The old buildings of Blijdorp are stunning, and I am happy they repurposed them for smaller animals.
    I don't like Artis as a zoo. They had a habitat with a camel, a long horn cow or buffalo and a donkey in one habitat, which seemed entire out of place. Artis hasnt adopted their old habitats as nicely as Blijdorp has, thought I do like one building that was converted into a kind of green house

    The closest zoo to my hometown (where I often went as a child) has kept the old gorilla enclosures and converted them into enclosures for smaller animals. But in such a way that you can still recognize the old ones. Some animals have also been given two of these cells as enclosures - this was adapted to their size. And near the old gorilla enclosures is now the new enclosure, which is really impressive (it has an indoor area through which you can walk over a bridge and an outdoor area). It is the Rostock Zoo - with multiple awards for "best zoo in Europe" (2020, for the third time)

    Congratulations on this video which shows such a promising start to the zoo!
    When we see certain "historical creators" on Planet Zoo who seem a little tired, it's a real pleasure to see an "elder" who has not given up on his passion, nor on the excellence acquired with his long experience, and above all who continues to like to transmit to his visitors. I am very grateful to you!

    It made me immediately think of the huge Leipziger Zoo. Have been there a few times over the years and have seen how much they are changing, how much larger the newer enclosures are and, of course, Gondwanaland. The huge tropical house. And I can for sure say, you captured the vibe perfectly.

    The original Los Angeles zoo (called the Griffith Park zoo) was built in the early 20th century and the pictures of it that still exist are incredibly bleak. There's the kind of barred cages I thought only existed in old cartoons. The "improved" enclosures were still just tiny rectangles of unforgiving concrete.
    It was closed down and replaced by the current Los Angeles Zoo in the 1960s and it's absolutely worlds apart from the first one. They've been continually expanding and upgrading it and improving the habitats as our understanding of animals' needs increases, and it's been a key facility in the conservation of the California condor. The old zoo is now a picnic area and hiking trail, where you can wander around the old enclosures.

    The first zoo I’ve been to is Blijdorp in Rotterdam and it’s still my favorite to this day, I love their old buildings (which weren’t very animal friendly back in the day) that they’ve changed so that the animals can thrive in them. I’d love to see this in this zoo as well!! ❤

    Regarding personal experience with zoos and realizing when habitats weren't the best for animals, I've had this thought recently as I went to my local zoo, Denver Zoo, recently and noticed this old Feline House was in the process of being taken down because it was really sad and unethical, built in the 60's, but it did make me think because as a kid it was one of my favorite parts of the zoo when I had no real grasp of the animal's true welfare, I just enjoyed it because of the animals like a Fossa (not a Feline, but goes to show the age of the building) they had. I look back on it now fondly still as it had a unique, honestly very pretty classical design but I am glad it's being torn down and the zoo is focusing so much on conservation and animal welfare, especially as Denver Zoo does have a history of being a trailblazer in that regard in the US with it's Bear Mountain exhibit.
    Some exhibits, especially the uniquely shaped and designed Feline House from the Denver Zoo might make good inspiration!

      @@RudiRennkamel Burger's is really fun! Afaik it's the oldest zoo in the Netherlands that really tried their best to actually care about animal welfare and conservation and made large, (semi-)natural looking and feeling habitats instead of just cramming in as many exotic animals as possible to make money. Although (old) Emmen zoo also claims that

    In Cologne Zoo ( that is also a city zoo ) there are many small habitats. There is a Gorilla and chimpanzee dome that isn't even that small, but they have nowhere to go where the guests can't see them and it feels very sad😢.

    you should visit wildlands adventure zoo emmen (located in the province Drenthe) sometime. i absolutely love the theming, the zoo is spilt into climate like tropicel, a more colder climate and a sort of african climate. there are also rides like a rollercoaster, a boat ride, a safari and a 4d experience (unfortunetly its in dutch). i sometimes go just to see the theming and its great for insperation and hope you visit it sometime 10/10 from me.
    (I hope it is readable because I have dyslexia and English is not my first language)

    Artis zoo is the city zoo of all time. a 10 minute walk from the city centre of amsterdam. its very compact there is barely any space between the attractions. Multiple entrances. in artis the streets completly surrounds it. Making it very smart for the park to have multiple entrance points. and the lion habitat is just sad, very small (I think around 50 square metres for 4 lions. but they cant expand it too. I also noticed there were lots of houses, more than most zoos (I don't know if this is only artis but I still noticed it). they have an insect house, a reptile house, a research house, and 1 or 2 more

    I had hoped the next project would be a city zoo - really excited to see your take on the concept!
    With London Zoo as my main point of reference, something they’ve done many times recently has been converting areas that previously held many species (all the big cats, or dozens of apes and monkeys) to only house one species (lions, and gorillas) - if you know what the areas used to look like, you can still see the bones of the separate enclosures, but they’ve been linked together into one larger space. Could be an interesting concept to explore somewhere to put across the idea of an older zoo changing with the times

    If you want some classic architecture, related to zoo's specifically, i would suggest you look up some pictures of Rotterdam Zoo, especially in the past and its classic entrance. Or just Syboldt van Ravenstein.
    What about having a Windmill themed area based around the Barnyard Animals, maybe including the Mute Swan in it as well. Maybe it can even be the area being the classical theme and the modern section of the zoo.

    WOW! I honestly haven't watched the video yet but I'm very excited about it!! Thank you Rudi for still creating these wonderful projects despite Planet Zoo getting to the end of its life as a game.
    I used to go to the Buenos Aires zoo, a very old zoo (IIRC it was founded at the end of the 19th century) and it still looked kinda old. Those visits really marked my childhood and I can still recall those days, like what we would do before going to the zoo, the path we would follow in the zoo, the animals, the sitting areas, and what we did after going to the zoo. These memories carry lots of nostalgia too...
    The zoo was shut down as a zoo in 2016 and now kinda works as an ecopark. It still is a very important place in terms of its architecture and you can find some photos on Google. The Elephant shelter is pretty iconic...

    You seriously live close to me, Rudi. I'm German as well, but my favourite zoo around here is a Dutch one. GAIA ZOO in Kerkrade. Less than an hour away from me and that's something living in the Eifel 😂.
    I love this new project of yours.
    First habitat i noticed is no good for the animals was the old Bear cage in Hellental. 😢 so small. Thank the gods they don't have bears anymore. And i always think the habitat of the sea lions in Cologne is too small

    My favorite zoo is Odense Zoo, they’ve done an amazing job at converting the old inconsiderate habitats to fit way more suitable species. My mother experienced the old zoo, back then it was connected to a theme park so you could visit both. She would tell me what each habitat used to house. There’s a rly small but tall building that houses giraffes, I can’t even imagine them in there, since it’s so small, but now it has a medium sized family of monkeys in there :) they look way happier and they’ve made tons of climbing in there.
    One of the coolest things they have today, is that they have pathways with little platforms around trees leading all the way to the entrance, where red pandas can walk over, and get super close to guests. There’s no fence or anything since the pandas can’t climb over edges well, since they climb face down first, it’s the coolest thing they have, and I haven’t seen anything like it in any other zoo :)

    • @RudiRennkamel
      @RudiRennkamel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @PrimalGamer2656
    @PrimalGamer2656 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Really cool so far, as for a suggestion, I love the idea of the lar gibbon being around the entrance, as from what I’ve seen it’s a very European thing to have a primate area near the front entrance. As for the suggestion I think somewhere around the gibbon it would be really neat to have some “old world” primates house or section like the siamang lemurs and maybe chimps as I think it would be cool to maybe have the smaller monkeys and apes have more old school habitats while say the more bigger apes getting a more modern transition . Overall keep up the good work

    Rudi, you truly amazing😊 Really great work and a great end project of Planet Zoo. This Game deserve this. My first Zoo I visit was Hagenbeck in Hamburg. I liked the Zoo because of the "Eismeer" and because of lots of greenery where you can came down or eat something. So very friendly for families. But the best Zoo I was ever was Hannover. Its really friendly for wheelchair users and has a boattour. But in all of Zoos I was there were mostly lions, icebears and Co which has not much space and I was in lot of zoos😉😊 Im exited to see the next Episode😁

    One of my earliest memories of a zoo was actually at Shepreth zoo, the one Planet Zoo has hosted stuff with! I remember going across their waterside bridge and seeing memorial stones for all their dearly departed animals. I think some memorials would help it look like it has history!

    I've been to 2 zoos (the only ones close to me) where they had a polar bears, half of the enclosure was ground and half was water. No efforts to keep it cool in the summer, fortunately we have long winters so they did get snow but summer time is pitiful for them.

  • @ItsFoxcry
    @ItsFoxcry 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Things that I've seen at zoos...
    To start with some negatives; Marwell Zoo is currently in the process of making some massive improvements here, but there are still a LOT of artefacts of this being some rich old family's private collection; centred around an old manor house, and the big-cat enclosures particularly are *very* small. However, a GREAT zoo otherwise and they are raising money to improve these things!!!
    Positives? Chester Zoo! They're hot on improving things and conservation efforts, and a lot of their newer enclosures and buildings include recycled materials from the old enclosures!

    My local zoo is very old in the United States. We have a historic Elephant House that held Asian Elephants until I was a teenager, and we (rightly) got rid of them. It was mostly concrete. I was sad but it was long overdue. The space is put to better use now.

    Really excited for this project! My favorite city zoo that I've been to is the Bronx Zoo in NYC. It's 256 acres (about 3x the size of the Berlin Zoo) in the middle of the Bronx which is so surreal because it's so forested that the sights and sounds of the city disappear around you. They have a Wild Asia Monorail experience that travels throughout 40 acres of a wooded safari-like area subdivided into large meadows and valleys where full herds of ungulates graze and other species that need a large amount of space (like the tigers and elephants) roam. I know not many zoos have the luxury of space and funding for something like this, but I think it is a good example of a zoo choosing animal welfare and large habitats over cramming the space with as many profit-generating animals as possible. Just something to think about! If you are ever in the US, you have to go!

    I love the new project. What first comes to my mind is animals like penguins and polar bears just basically live on concrete floors here in Germany, because we obviously are not able to bring the arctic climate into a zoo. Second thought goimg from there are the plants. I never once saw a real savannah tree in an Elephant habitat here, thinking about it, I don't really remember any tree in the elephant habitat, oof. Looking very forward to this series

      I feel the same! I think a botanical garden would add something to the Dutch early 1900’s vibe you are going for.
      The botanical gardens and the surrounding buildings in Leiden could be a great reference for you: old greenhouses, a monumental observatory (named ‘sterrenwacht’) and industry like high rise which is used as an university building nowadays.

    I havent gotten super far in the video yet, but i like the idea Rudi, excited to see where it goes. Zoos have come a long way ethically, but still have a long way to go. I think whats going to be tough at least for me in suggesting unethical things in the past is that I dont really want to see those habitats built haha. If you made the unethical ones first and then did a second episode totally refurbishing them to be aza accredited and even above and beyond standards i think thatd be cool and educational, but its double the work haha.

    as my suggestion would be to ad a mixed lemur habitat and a cool more modern reptile house

    use a car, in game car to put a. Experience in wild habitat. And for my experience we had this open habitat for Big Animals and we are using our own car to experience it as Tiger are walking with us as we are in his habitat. Same goes with Cheetah, Same goes with Panther. And not just Big Cats btw. Hippo too, Ostrich too.

    Sounds like a really exciting project,
    I recommend Zoo Budapest , im not a fan of the enclosers but the surrounding classicist and seccesion cityscape is really nice, expessialy the park and the botanical garden
    For a smaller scale Veszprém Zoo (pretty general architechture but such clean and more suited enclosers,) its a much more contemporary smaller zoo, the tiger and lynx habitats are amazing looking and uses the topography resourcefully

  • @FurFoxMcCloud

    In city zoos I know, one thing that they mostly have is being landlocked and thus have only that muich space. Meny deal with it by building stoff multi-level. This would be an interesting challenge for you, I think.

  • @nici0246
    @nici0246 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Maybe you could build some habitats specifically for one animal (the way it was in the past) and afterwards change it so another smaller animal can fit in, this way your story would come across better

    16:31 isn't the Amsterdam Zoo the "Artis"?
    The desert house somehow reminds me of the Alfred Brehm Haus in Berlin🤔 (at least the shape of the building). And I somehow hope that one part of this zoo will become a botanical garden (with some bigger greenhouses and an outdoor garden).
    Edit: 41:33 since when do we have an invisible staff path in the game?🤔🤔😨
