    Lovely! I've watched this a few times but just come back to it as a little reinforcement for a mix i'm currently working on. Good to know the classics still work. It's nothing too fancy or complex, but you're giving away gold here. I apply the same idea to my live rig. Thanks Warren.

    I pretty much do what you do as well with compression and EQ. One thing I will do is record a second track and add slight distortion to the bass to help it cut through the mix. Works quite well. I also record direct and I use amplitube for my bass cabs, etc.. best way to go for me and my clients

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool stuff David Gurr! Yes I like to distort one signal, here I'm distorting a duplicate file of the Bass amp, sometimes I'll overdrive a dupe of the Di instead. Agreed there are great amp simulators out there as well that mean you can just use a Di and create a huge sound! Thanks for the comment and watching. Have a marvelous tike recording! • @SLoMo4
    @SLoMo4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Warren, I'm still only just learning how to record most things the "proper" way, but I had an issue with recording bass in the past that maybe you could help with.
    In the past, I have recorded bass via direct input from a bass head to my interface.
    What kept happening was, most of the middle and upper notes, like on the A string and above, the note itself would cut through nicely and be heard. Lower notes (E string and B string on a 5 string bass) would produce MASSIVE wavelengths visually, and you could feel them in your chest, but the note itself would be virtually unheard by the ear. Even when checking with a frequency analyst plugin, it would show that the low note was indeed LOUDER, but for some reason it just wasn't as audible. Going to a low D on the bass would feel like an earthquake, but at the same time, in terms of tone, it sounded like the bass was almost muted entirely.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi +SLoMo4 great question! It sounds as though the EQ from your amp and your bass are putting exaggerated EQ at certain frequencies. I would look at adjusting your EQ settings, boosting some mids at 750hz, maybe even 350hz on your amp, or run through a multi band compressor on an aux to control the long end. It would start with adjusting your EQ on your amp, then adding some compression first then seeing what happens next. Please let me know how you get on! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Hey Warren, nice video! I'll have to try that next time. I usually duplicate my bass track so that I get two tracks. On the first one I'll keep only the low-end + use a compressor (often LA-2A from Cakewalk) and on the other track I'll only keep the mid-range information that I like to compress and distort (often with Softube saturation plugin!). Cheers.

    Hey Warren absolutely love your stuff I've learned so much I went to school for sound engineering back in the day when we used to have to splice tape with razor blade and clean tape heads. I know this is an old video and I'm not sure if you'll see these comments but I have a question about the base sound on Lenny Kravitz - Mama Said from always on the run it's so ridiculously tight with the kick drum I'm wondering if they're not side-chaining and expander from the kick for the bass guitar cuz it actually doesn't duck out of the way it intensifies every time the kick hits maybe the guys just that tight but I'd love to know how to get that sound!

    Warren, is it possible to mix bass on headphones? Nothing seems to work for me. Pair of bad monitors in small non-customized room is hell. And using headphones i usually end up with lot of bass, but really low on other frequences. I use currently HD 650.

    Hi Warren! Thank you so much for all of your videos, they're extremely helpful to your viewers. I had a quick question that may not have an easy answer: my DAW did not come with a multiband compressor, and I can't afford to buy any plugins at all at the moment. Is there either a good, free multiband compressor plugin that you can suggest or a method to do this without such a plugin? (I'm imagining routing the signal to an aux channel that has a band-pass at the top of the chain, followed by a traditional compressor, or something like that, but can't quite work it out in my head.) Many thanks in advance! Cheers, Jay

  • @22david05
    @22david05 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great explanation, still theres one detail I don't get:
    By enabling the 'Solo' switch on the lowest frequency band of the Multiband Compressor, only frequencies within that band are played back at all, right? (At least that's how the 'Solo'-Button on a C4 works.)
    So why bother first rolling the high end off with a nice, gentle slope if you completely get rid of everything above the 200Hz crossover frequency in the next step anyways? Simply for demonstration purposes or is there any benefit that i do not understand?
    Thank you

    Thanks for the all the tips Warren. Will have to try cutting the highs from the Bass D.I. next time.
    A trick I like to use on Bass is to use the Waves c6 plugin (on my bass master) and use the kick drum to duck certain frequencies of the bass.
    Really enjoying the great videos.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anthony Gibney thanks very much for watching and sharing! That sounds like a cool trick you have there, I will endeavor to try it myself. Have a marvelous time recording. Many thanks Warren

    • @anthonygibney4003
      @anthonygibney4003 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi *****, I usually cut masking frequencies too as well as doing this trick. I find that instead of one plugin or piece of gear to to all the heavy lifting, I use a few things. It's based on the idea of ducking the bass (from the kick) with a full bandwidth compressor but I found that I preferred using the Waves C6 as it's a multiband compressor.
      I can keep the mids on the bass as I want them. Also, if there is a part in the song where the kick is not playing and just the bass, I don't want the bass to Then using two bands on the C6, I can duck where the weight and click of the kick is at various levels depending on the genre.
      After saying all that, sometimes the song does not need it and the kick and bass should glue together with the correct musical arrangement and a bit of eq.
      Have fun side-chaining!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +Carl Anderson Yes sometimes sjidechaining the bass and kick works nicely, especially if the Bass and kick aren't very tight! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +Anthony Gibney Fantastic stuff! I don't often do it, but I will sometimes do that when there's a huge build up down there and usually because the bass and kick aren't jelling very well! Thanks for your insight! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    Hi Warren,
    I just started attempting to record, edit, and mix at home, and I am finding your videos extremely useful. With regards to recording bass guitar I am only recording through a DI (my focusrite 2i4). I am hoping you can point me in the right direction or post a video with mixing a straight DI bass. I read the comments bellow regarding duplicating the DI bass track and mixing them separately, but wouldn't you achieve the same end by just EQ'ing one track? I apologize if the question is extremely basic, but I am new to this and would really like to get a strong bass sound using just a DI. Thanks so much for your help, and all you terrific videos.

I'm a professional myself (www.allmusic.com/artist/john-siket-mn0000237464) and I also teach recording at SAE in New York. also with the bass chain that you have.... with the mid boost that you did with the mcdsp, is this a better way of adding it separate after the R Bass plugin and the others or is this just the case of it works for the song?

    Hey Warren, hope you’re doing marvellously well. My question is; why do you use a multi band compressor rather than a standard comp when everything from 200 and above is already cut / gone... What am I missing there? You’re a marvellous man with all you give Mate! Cheers. T.

    What’s the advantage of using DI boxes and bass pres when recording into the computer? Why not just use the instrument line on the audio interface? I can’t here any difference between a DI and the inst line in. Maybe I’m missing something lol

    I've been watching many of your vids recently and am very impressed. I have learnt many things that I have put into practice. Thanks! I have another question if you don't mind? When you demonstrated the phase cancellation (1:36 is the best view)) I noticed that the bass recordings are more latent than the 40 Wm_D.22 track, and the tracks below. I think I obsess about this too much and find myself manually moving them to look consistent by trying to match the waves. Is this a good thing to do? I managed to reduce my latency to 2.3 ms for the input and 2.5 ms for the output in Cubase; all by doing a clean install of Win XP and tweaking a few things. I wonder if I worry too much about the finer details, but my motivation is better sounding songs, so it can't be all bad. 4:22 was a pearl of wisdom!

    Great video! Do you really usually add 350Hz to the bass?? I've found that I like to cut that region on almost everything, even on bass but maybe it would be a good place to put the bass when the mix has a lot of space for it? Do you cut certain frequencies on other instruments to make space for the bass, what regions?
    I've found that 350Hz region really hard to get right, cut too much and the mix becomes thin and too much takes the clarity away. Also the choices of wich instruments should build that region of the mix are pretty tough ones.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi +Frost Mutant Haha I cut 350z on the drums a lot across the board, I might add it on Bass to fill in the low mids, it depends on the song! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Hi Warren, I am remixing and remastering an old song I wrote back in 2003. I am using the the post edited WAV tracks from the previous recording. While remixing the bass tracks I made the mistake of not taking any breaks and got caught up searching for a specific bass tone using plug in amps, compressors, etc and lost where I was tonally...if that makes sense. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I was going for that classic Spector NS into a GK800RB through a Hartkey aluminum cone 4x10 cab. Punchy, piano growl!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi tribunation thanks for the great question. One thing I have been doing recently with Bass is after doing all my processing, adding plug ins etc is muting them all and comparing where I came from. I find that often I can get tied in knots and just listening to the signal unprocessed reminds me sometimes of how little we really need to do to get it to sound great! Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Nice video's Warren!
    What's your opinion on running DI's with amp simulation in (heavily) distorted bass sounds? I'm using a vintage fulltube amp without a DI-out... A distorted bass directly into a DI sounds like cr@p, even though it sounds great with clean bass. In live situations I might run into sound guys who refuse to mic the bass amp (these guys exist, sadly) and I've recently read about DI's you can paralel into your speaker cab such as the Palmer PDI-09. Thus getting the tube amp into the equation which I use to make my sound...
    Any thoughts? :)

    Down with pretty much all you show here, except...
    ...once I have a solid bass mult, I like to feed it thru the grot-box speakers, in this case, 2 inch, single driver Dell PC speakers.
    There's such a shortage of capable playback systems across the mainstream end-user world these days, that bass guitar (and kick) either get lost, or get muddy.
    The key to balance in these low end challenged systems are in the 3-400 and 650-850 range.
    Not just using the limited bandwidth monitors to balance the boosts at these frequencies, but also cutting other instruments slightly to make room for these "slices of bass."
    The grot-box mix never survives once I go back to mixing on full range monitors. Instead, it serves as a starting point, where I can then bring in and balance the low end, then make final tweaks to the emphasis frequencies, such that each instrument is present in the final mix, IF you listen for it, but blends seamlessly, when you don't focus on it.
    This... on MOST playback systems, including cellphones and earbuds.

      Thanks for the insight, mate. There is also nice amount of snare wire bleed in the kick that gives it a sustained puff, which seems to be bringing the whole kick forward. Goes to show that the best practice is to get the right sound at the source! Cheers

    Warren is it ok for my studio monitors that I practice bass at low volumes through them? Don't wanna blow one but don't feel like swinging fir a bass amp if I can get away without it being I'm a drummer and just messing around on bass to add some bass lines to my own originals only. Thanks

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Larry, great question! It all comes down to dynamics! If the signal is extremely dynamic it might blow the drivers, can you use a compressor or limiter across the Bass just to be careful? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    • @larrytate1657
