Great video. I do the same combination: DI for lows and a reamped channel for mids/highs. Super clean lows and more character and ear-friendly mids/highs at the same time!
This was perfectI I had this idea to mix a guitar direct-in with a mic'd amp and realized there was a slight phase issue, and hearing you explain it so clearly was very helpful.
There's tube amps like the Ampeg PF50T and Fender Bassman 100T, that use post power amp signal. So you can get tube power distortion through the DI and make the stage PA system the tube amplifier itself
Great video. Here's what I do. I'm a guitarist, and I have a bunch of pedals and an amp which makes up what I consider to be "my tone". So I always mic up the cab for recording my guitar parts. I have a bass, and I can play really simple bass parts, but I don't have a bass amp, and it sounds like garbage if I play it through the guitar amp. Not enough bottom. So I just DI it and use a VST bass amp plug in to get the sound I am looking for. Best of all worlds as far as I am concerned.
he didn't really talk about pre/post you can go DI before or after your sound gets colored by the Amp as long as your amp has the option. if you go post you still miss the cab/Mic color obviously.
How is possible to do both direct and micing at the same time? Guitars/basses don't have two outputs where you can plug one cable into an audio interface and a second cable that plugs into the amp. So is the solution to use an amp that has an output jack that can send a clean signal?
*Thanks very much! This is the best tutorial about putting a mic to your cab. 🎥🏆🎶🎵 I’m always trying to get the sound as good as possible in my own videos so this really helps! 🐇🇺🇸⭐️🎶 Have a happy Easter! Again, thank you!*
To you, the mic. only is the one with the "rawness"? Interesting that you'd say that, because it's actually direct that would be the raw one, since you just said that the mic and cab color the sound, and coloring sound _removes_ rawness.
The Big Blue !! If you have a local music shop I’d suggest going there or musiciansfriend.com sometimes amazon has them in stock. Just search for the Sansamp Bass Driver it’s made by the company Tech21
Use a DI output which sends the processed signal through the out if available then you get the signal the way the amp processed it instead of a dry pre-amp signal. On Some amps you can choose the mixed or processed signal and others might only offer the processed signal while some may only allow you to get a dry signal.
Hi! I have a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere... I've been playing through my effects and amp for some years. But I am starting to use a DI to FOH and I am wondering how to carve my own sound... I mean, with the amp, I hear what my bass sounds like. Through the DI, only the sound engineer receives the signal and pushes it to FOH or my in-ear monitors. But how should I know how to set my preamp to get a killer sound???
Cool video. One thing to touch on might be pre vs post eq on DI out from the amp. As a sound guy and a bass player, a lot of bassists I would mix had been beaten into submission by other engineers and felt like it was a sin to send me a post eq signal. I liked the post eq signal on amps with really nice pre-amp sections because without it you pretty much loose that part of the signal chain.
It brings some life and character back to the DI sound too, especially with a nice bass/preamp combo. I always wanted to let people sound like themselves. Your tone is a big part of how you present your playing to the audience.
Question: can I use a di box together with an amp head? I imagine the amp head would “beautify” the clean tone of the di box, before going into my MPC Live?
I have a question If I am recording using this connection : Guitar --> Amp --> Amp Line Out --> Instrument Input of the audio interface --> computer (while recording) Can i hear the guitar sound from the amp while recording ?
When your phase correcting your DI and Cab are you perfectly alligning the waveforms in your Daw or are you just flipping polarity on one of the tracks, or are you using a different phase editing technique? How do you like to do it?
I like to use a plugin by Waves called In Phase. It'll do everything you ever need it to when it comes to fixing phase issues :) Hope that helps James!
First, that bass sounded amazing. I preferred the D.I sound the best. I have an Gk plex that I have to level things down cause it wants add to much to my mix. I also bought a ampeg scr that give me option to play direct without the preamp. Overall they both have their uses. Love them both. Great video
Thank you for posting this Jayme, very informative. What about the possibility of going direct without an amp? The church I play at has horrific acoustics and our worship director would like to remove amps altogether. We have a poor man's in ear system, the drummer and I share a single feed. She tasked me with researching the options and suggested the Line 6 Helix LT. I know most bass amp manufacturers produce some sort of direct box/effects unit. Do you have any opinion on this? Thanks in advace for your feedback.
Thanks Miguel! Ya I do that all the time. Removing the amps won't fix your horrible acoustics, however. It'll give you less problems to deal with but it'll hardly fix anything. I think that any DI box will work just fine, but some are more cleaner than others. I'm a fan of the Radial JDI myself. Thanks for reaching out Miguel!
won't it be easier to put up acoustic panels in your church rather than invest in new gear? i mean, unless everyone in the audience is going to be wearing in-ear monitors the room acoustics are always going to be in effect. it sounds like maybe your music director just wants control of your eq and volume in their hands (or the sound-engineer/mixer) rather than the musicians. (which is probably a very good idea- they can hear the overall mix better than the stage musicians). a helix isn't cheap, and definitely doesn't solve your acoustic problem. All that aside, i've heard very, very good things about the motown di from Acme... yup like roadrunner cartoons. but bear in mind it's just a di, not a pre-amp or eq. The Avalon Di is nice for some tonal presets, but is expensive and geared more toward recording. but it doesn't sound like you want a di at all to me. for what you're talking about it sounds like almost any multi effects processor might work, even older ones like a boss gt-6 or a pod which would be way more affordable than a helix. that being said, one of my former band mates bought a helix and loves it. it's a very flexible piece of gear. but just one line 6 helix, for one instrument is 1,000 USD. i don't know how big your church is, but some corner sound traps would probably help a lot more than ditching your amp and buying a helix. you can build sound panels yourself from rockwool insulation bought from home depot or lowes pretty affordably. (that's actually the very best material to make them out of). As Jayme said, the Radial JDI is a really good di. i use a countryman type 10, a little labs IBP, and the di output on my Peterson strobo stomp pedal. all good very basic di's, but it doesn't sound like super-basic is what you're looking for?
Hello , thank you so much for great video , I currently own an acoustic image amp head and want to record something, there is a direct out XLR out put, my question is can I plug in from amp’s direct out to my audio interface without a D.I box ? Or do I need a D.I box in between? Thank you
I have a question. So I want to use a line out on the back of my amp. However, what I am asking is when we plug the bass wire from the amp to the audio interface function, does the sound from the amp cut off because it is connected to the audio interface system or will you hear sound both in the Bass Amp and the audio interface system at the same time? Sorry if the question is a little confusing. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Hi Nathan - I'm actually not quite sure what you're asking, but if you'd like you can join me in a live stream today around 1pm PST at www.twitch.tv/jaymelewisthebassist and elaborate your question there - I'm sure I can help!
Sure thing! Swing by my Twitch stream any day this week and I'll let you know. I stream M-F at 5pm PSt www.twitch.tv/jaymelewisthebassist see ya there!
Guitar: Amp Bass: Direct Why: I have found it harder to mic for bass without having it get too much “punch” or a trebly “wap” sound. When I go direct I can get a nice clean tone that I can mess around with later. With a guitar, going direct loses the warmth that seems to only be delivered by a good amp speaker.
Don't overcomplicate things, do it as simple as possible. I use to talk to the tech before soundcheck and ask if he is willing to try my post EQ DI - tone. All I have heard about this option is "OK, I'll get you out of FOH just as you go in". If there is enough time I ask for an additional miked up channel, and choose then, what to use in the mix.
Very good demonstration. You didn't explain how the phase correction actually operated to fix your blended sounds. Is it simply computer automated, are you using straightforward phase reversal, or did you delay (ie shift) the D.I. input by micro amounts by ear, to fix the audio discrepancy?
For me the problem with di's is when you are using a effected sound, so for me 90% of the time i have fuzz or distortion this into a di sounds harsh and abrasive, to then have to eq the di isnt something a lot of sound guys will do for you, they will think oh he wants to sound like that lets get levels.......this is why i have chose to go down the cab emulation route with my two notes stuff, i can emulate my 810 with a mic, and they have all the positives of a di, no bleed etc but you have a signal that works for me. i get you are dealling with clean bass here but just my two cents
I got that using 2 tracks is awesome, one with the DI and another with the Mic. What do you think about using only the DI with UAD Plug-ins like Neve1073, Hitsville EQ and Teletronix L2-A2? Do you think that chain would be able to color the DI sound as it was mic’ed? Thanks. Excellent video by the way. You are very good!!!
Not if the interface has a HiZ input - the DI box converts unbalanced low- to medium-level, high-impedance signal from a bass to a mic-level, balanced and low-impedance signal. If your interface has the HiZ input then that is being done for you, unless you have a DI with color to it (like the Noble Preamp or A-Designs REDDI or something). Hope that helps!
i love my pre/di Aguiar blending that wit mic my 12live n studio mic 12 n 10 and having a clean clean di then have dirty mildly overdriven amp, what do u like about reddi vs u5, bae1073
I’m considering just bringing a DI to shows because I’m tired of lugging around my amp. I want something very simple so I’m not constantly tweaking it. I was leaning towards the Eden DI. What’s your recommendation for a simple DI with an EQ? Great video! Thanks
I'd say the Aguilar ToneHammer is my favorite. It's the same pre/eq section from the ToneHammer amp minus the amplifier itself. Easy to dial in and sounds great. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I'm wondering if you will explain the signal flow from the bass? You thump a string, it goes out your bass' cable to the DI? Same jacks as the bass? The signal is in the DI and you XLR that to a soundboard? How does the sound get to the amp? or is the DI cabled to the amp and the soundboard? thanks in advance.
But, wouldn't that colour of the mic be lost in the mix and simply not be noted by the audience? Or does that help cutting the mix? And cannot that be emulated by processing the signal, thus being easier than finding the mic sweet spot and then processing that with phase correcting?
Humberto Silva It really helps. A lot of people think highs are what's gonna get them to cut through the mix, but it's really the mids that do the job and mids are a lot of that colour from the amp. Technically it should be possible to emulate it without actually having the signal from the cab, but in reality it's not really gonna get quite there. I guess you just have to try out what you like best.
Great video! Congrats! You really know your craft. Im planning on getting an Aguilar Toner Hammer DI pedal for on stage settings. This way I would use my amp as a monitor and send the DI into de mixer. Would you agree this a good setting (on a budget)?
ive only been using the ampeg di for live shows i love using n get asked what i use on stage the only problem i have is that some times n bass isnt as loud as id want it to the front of house n hardly having any stafe volume, would it be best to run the pedal thro a cab?
Is there some coloration or other effect on the tones when you phase correct? If so, I think I would just pass the phase correcting step and just go with either DI for pristine tones or mic'd cab for vintage / organic tones, not both together. Preferably DI since the guitar, the vocals, and the drums are already recorded mic'd.
Jayme that was excellent , to be honest Ive never used DI , had no clue what it is because I'm old school 60 year old dude , Ive always mic'ed my amp. Bet you a lot of old dudes like me wont admit they dont know what DI is or are just poor dudes like me and cant afford any other way.
of course! very relevant and useful information! I enjoy your work and get inspired by you to be a better bass player/musician. amazing how I've survived all these years .
@@jme92685 If it's being sent POST then yes, if PRE then no. Of course, the effects of the speaker are completely bypassed because there's no microphone picking it up.
@@deadbeatstudios Thanks for taking the time to reply, very cool. I didn't think about a lot of this stuff before, I love your channel. I just tell the sound guys "whatever you want," every time, haha.

You mean like plugging a mic into your pc then wanting that audio into your game chat on your pc? Or literally send audio from something like youtube on your computer directly into game chat?
I *only* mic my 8x10 with a huge tube head on it, even for recording. There's just no other way to perfectly capture THAT sound, which was in my head for over 10 years before I got the gear in question. A good D.I. rig with VST's comes *damn* close, but no cigar. There's just a certain warmth, feel, and liveliness to tube amp-powered passive basses that active ones into D.I. rigs simply don't have, and even in a full mix, yes, my ears can tell a difference, because I don't just mix in bottom end and low-mid frequencies from the bass. I also mix in some upper midrange and treble to give the bass a more expressive sound.
hello, i am currently having this dilemma, i was thinking of buying a higher watts bass amp, or should i get a powered speaker? i have an Aguilar Tone Hammer DI, and i was planning to bypass the amp head even if i buy one. please i need some input on this regard.
but regarding the tone? do you think it would somehow be similar? coz logically, if i by-pass the preamp/eq of the amplifier, i was just using it as a power amp for the cab right? or will it produce a different tone coz the cab was using a more bass specific speakers?
Yes, line out. As far as tone - you'll just need to try it out to see if it makes that much of a difference for you. Who knows? Could sound awesome! Or terrible haha
"Instead of it being a DI or a cab., it's gonna be both of them together..." Opes, here's the word "JUST" that you dropped on the floor, ha! (Both of them together still _are_ DI and cab.)

Do you have the boss katana mk2 50? I am looking to buy that now and I'm wondering if it sounds good.
Phase effect in the audio was cool. I caught it!

I noticed that too
yeah, me too. Too none emphasis on that cool feature of the video :D
That intro is life bro.
That was really easy to understand but also detailed! I would be interested to hear a compariison of a mic-ed amp and a virtual amp.

No plugin required

On Some amps you can choose the mixed or processed signal and others might only offer the processed signal while some may only allow you to get a dry signal.
It's good for clean sounds, but as soon as you put distortion or overdrive, the crossover in the speaker of the cabinet wants to send it to the horn.

It really helps.
What kind of strings are you using? Rounds, flats? And what brand are they? Ghs boomers, Drs etc.. Are they steels, nickel or what?
I play D'Addario Nickelwounds, typically 45-105 gauges on my 4 strings :)
You're an awesome player
Thank you Ozzie!
Neither... I just go through the air.
If the sound comes from the amp where is the speaker of the mic? A separate di?
Is the cab aguilar SL112?
Jayme that was excellent , to be honest Ive never used DI , had no clue what it is because I'm old school 60 year old dude , Ive always mic'ed my amp.
Bet you a lot of old dudes like me wont admit they dont know what DI is
or
are just poor dudes like me and cant afford any other way.
Direct out and Miking Cab is the way to go
you're an excellent teacher!
Thank you so much Mike! I'm honored! If it's not too much to ask, would you mind sharing this video for me? I'd really appreciate the help!
of course! very relevant and useful information! I enjoy your work and get inspired by you to be a better bass player/musician. amazing how I've survived all these years .
Thank you so much, I'm really gad you're digging the channel! There's plenty more at TheBassist.net if you're interested!
Great, useful video
Thanks!
For my home studio I'll do direct when I take scratch tracks to a real studio everything gets mic'd
Is there a way to record the organic/raw sound from the amp directly to the computer without a mic?
That's what going direct is.
@@deadbeatstudios But do I get the sound with all the in amp effects on it?
@@jme92685 If it's being sent POST then yes, if PRE then no. Of course, the effects of the speaker are completely bypassed because there's no microphone picking it up.
Wow this video was informative
Hi J. How did you correct that phase issue please?, what tweaks did you make to the DI signal, and your miked up amp?.
Check this out, it may help thebassist.net/blending-dis-with-miced-amps-the-bassists-guide-to-recording-12/
@@deadbeatstudios Spot on, thank you. Good sound on that bass man.
When playing live, the sound guy usually just plugs into my amp. Are they bypassing the eq, and then coloring it themselves, or is it an eq'd signal?
Depends on if your amp has a Pre/Post switch for the DI. I like to send it dry if the room is big enough.
@@deadbeatstudios Thanks for taking the time to reply, very cool. I didn't think about a lot of this stuff before, I love your channel. I just tell the sound guys "whatever you want," every time, haha.
@@bochafish You're very welcome!
Okay but is there any way to play slap bass through direct input? Because no matter how much compression I put on it it still sounds like crap
This is an old video that you might want to check out thebassist.net/game-of-tones-how-to-get-a-good-slap-tone-week-78/ otherwise come ask this question LIVE during my next live stream on twitch! www.twitch.tv/jaymelewisthebassist
@@deadbeatstudios Duuuuuude this was actually very helpful thank you so much. Love the channel btw
awesome info !
Thanks! I'm glad you found it helpful :)
My reasoning for using DI is honestly just so I don't have to take an amp anywhere with me
I'm interested in an ampless rig. I'm curious about your rig . What do you use?
Ibra Jimenez it’s simple. Just buy a SansAmp bass driver and your good lol. Run that into a mixer or interface and then speakers.
Hi Jayme...
when you put LPF on the DI-Track and HPF on the Mic-Track... at which frequency (round about) do you set this X-over?
Thx
I think I try to find the sweetspot around 200-250.
thx a lot
Thank You !!!
"[...] boost up the low-end [...]"
How about this Meatbox then ?
can you so how get the audio from your pc to get in to game chat
I see what you did there while explaining the weird effect 😏
Why do guitar players(not bass players)not just use an output on their amp? Keeper and Fractal seem to be getting more popular. Why not just use DI?
Some do; Kemper is a popular one. I don't know why they're so scared of it though :)
hey where do you get that shirt man?

hello, i am currently having this dilemma,
i was thinking of buying a higher watts bass amp, or should i get a powered speaker?
i have an Aguilar Tone Hammer DI, and i was planning to bypass the amp head even if i buy one.
please i need some input on this regard.
If its for smaller gigs you might be able to get away with a small powered wedge. I wouldn't try to carry the room with it though :)
but regarding the tone? do you think it would somehow be similar? coz logically, if i by-pass the preamp/eq of the amplifier, i was just using it as a power amp for the cab right? or will it produce a different tone coz the cab was using a more bass specific speakers?
another follow up question, if i go amp-less and go directly to powered speaker, should i use the line out or the XLR output?
Yes, line out. As far as tone - you'll just need to try it out to see if it makes that much of a difference for you. Who knows? Could sound awesome! Or terrible haha
seems i like the process CAB than process DI
"Instead of it being a DI or a cab., it's gonna be both of them together..." Opes, here's the word "JUST" that you dropped on the floor, ha! (Both of them together still _are_ DI and cab.)
What is "later"
