The first clip is flipping the ALS bypass switch so he has antilag while decelerating. The switch controls a valve that bypasses the compressed air on the intake side before the throttle and spits it out into the exhaust manifold. The switch also changes the fuel mapping so that at 0% throttle position, the mixture runs very lean. That lean mixture leaves a lot of unburnt fuel going into the exhaustanifold where the bypassed air is apitting out. All that fuel and air combined with the hot exhaust manifold means that you not have combustion in your exhaust manifold to spool up the turbo. Anti lag.
So basically rally cars have an antilag system that is functioning at idle and everytime it decelerates, unlike some tuned street cars with als that has their bypass system closing after 5 seconds when antilag is engaged

What's the staccato hissing sound when he changes down? My first thought was a turbo dump valve but I dunno why it would sound like it's flickering?
It actually is a blow of valve. the sound these things make vary because of different reasons, a flickering sound is actually quite common:)
I guess these things are so highly strung and engineered that these sounds are to be expected. What a beast of a car though!
more likely to be a bypass valve which recirculates the air back into the compressor inlet rather than venting to atmosphere
+Cal “Calomile” Hallows WRC don't run BoV's, the sound you hear is what people call compressor surge or flutter, pretty much when throttle plate is closed the air in the piping goes back over the compressor wheel blades and causes this sound.
+ichiban ter They run a bypass valve for the anti-lag but that isn't the fluttering sound you hear.

The polo is another model completely. We don't get them in North America though which sucks.
First few seconds of the video the car goes from a silent IDLE to a loud IDLE.
Im guessing since these cars have to be road legal since they drive these from stage to stage... they have a Butterfly valve in the exhaust to quiet the car down??~

I get the Anti-lag part... but even then it doesn't change how loud the idle is. At least not on the road Subarus I've seen with anti-lag engaged.
@@proxlamuz4591 it completely changes the map, on stage mode they like to be full throttle, hence the rough and loud idle

Not sped up.look at the surrounding leaves and interactions between people and you'll see its real. That's a WRC driver driving on a familiarized track,no co-driver so no pace notes.Just speed and quiet plus a bit of fun
