      I think the recording microphone was probably below the tweeter level so seems that way. If you get on Twitter I posted the STLs, schematics and response plots. Cant li k here 'cos URLs get blocked.

    • @MEatRHIT2009
      @MEatRHIT2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure what you're listening on but the bass response was horrendous. It could be the mic, but the response graphs look less than ideal it basically drops off at 150Hz and then again at 60Hz which is a extended bass shelf alignment.... but normally you compensate for that in the crossover if you're building a full range speaker. Some subs can get away with that alignment but on a full range it's hard to do especially if the woofer doesn't have a ton of xmax to play with. That distortion you're hearing is the woofer exceeding xmax, it's bottoming out.
      I'm glad he's happy with them but they don't seem well thought out on the acoustical side

    • @Audio_Simon
      @Audio_Simon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MEatRHIT2009 The woofer response plot for the crossover simulation was measured 'windowed' to get a cleaner response high up. That's why it shows little bass extension. The actual extension will go to about 35hz which you can see in the 'Large vs Slim' comparison image 👍
      The woofer did seem to be moving a lot! It must have been crazy loud as that woofer is no joke! Either that, or there are air leaks still, or the mic was overloaded, or the amp was clipping.

Basically, this is why a propper school eductation is so important (Especially here in South Africa, where rural education is at a very basic level.) It allows a person to experience a deverse number of activities, to find out what they love, and what they are good at. Myself, I have yet to discover all that I am good at. Im sure this is probably said somewhere else. but I would suggest putting a subsonic filter (highpass set in the receiver) on the speakers right below wherever the enclosure is ported to. A ported box will "unload" below the resonant frequency and loose control of the driver (the speaker moves a LOT with no volume to make it worth it)
    It will allow you to turn it up higher and will have less distortion and sound better while youre at it =)
    Loved this project though! I am doing something similar at the moment to test out a new idea for my car!

    Like the speakers alot but a few questions. Why not use the HDMI cable for sound or the other digital inputs? Also, why is it set on all channel sound as opposed to regular stereo? The way you had it is playing as dual mono as opposed to left and right.
    You should really choose the setting of direct or pure direct then there is no chance for the AVR to be causing any issues with the signal of the sound. The speakers sound bass-heavy so maybe there is something with the receiver's settings that is causing it. Plus that's a little steep for that particular unit especially since they are known to have the hdmi boards die.
    If you have them bi-wired why not use the multi-channel input and set it up to run as bi-amped? you can do away with the crossover but you need the software and know-how.

    Is it difficult to add alignement grooves all along, on all thick part of 3d printed object ?
    I understand the need of lightness in an prototype or a RC Plane, or even for small prototypes
    But in this (huge ) case it would reduce assembly time. It would also greatly improve tightness and precision. Am i wrong?

    ONKYO was a really great product back in the 80s and it looks like that unit is from that approximate time period. I have some audio equipment from back in the 80s, Bose 901 speakers and a variety of other audio stuff, all still works and sounds great. But, today you can get tiny Bose speakers that also sound great and take up 1/50th of the space.

    • @connorjohnson4402
      @connorjohnson4402 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea definitely not from the 80s or 90s since it has an HDMI port. While not outright horrible, these receivers are not considered very good overall and would not be something to use as an example for a company. They had alot of problems with the HDMI board which is just a video signal but once it dies it renders the entire unit unusable. While I respect your opinion but I have to disagree with the idea of the Bose speakers sounding great. They are way too expensive and there are much better options for way less that sound as good and even better. There's only so much you can do with a tiny cube with only one single speaker driver.

    • @DaveDarin
      @DaveDarin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@connorjohnson4402 Ah. The ONKYO'sm from the 80s and early 90s were rated very good. BUT since you said it has an HDMI then yes much newer. I have not heard much about the brand, especially more recently, so I bet the quality has gone down.

    • @DaveDarin
      @DaveDarin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@connorjohnson4402 I actually do not have those tiny cube Bose speakers. I have only seen them demo'd. Like I said I have mostly old school equipment so I run Bose 901's and 601's. In fact I play the guitar, used to play professionally but no longer. I even have my guitars and amps from the 70s. Start, Tele, and Les Paul and I play through a 66 Fender Twin. I do have an older Bose Wave radio, the larger unit. Bought it used, decent sound, not sure I would brag about it but Just use it to stream SIRIUS over Alexa. @@3DPrintingNerd it looks great the way it is. I use bed liner on all of my enclosures for improving the sound, but it also looks really cool. You can try a few different brands. Hi! It may sound boring... But what's about the response curves, Joel? It's hard to understand what was recorded by this mic.

    If you sourced the sand from Home Depot, there is a great chance that it was mined & packaged at Icon's pit in Auburn Washington. They (their parent company) has the contract to supply the majority of the sand & gravel aggregate materials at Home Depot stores across the nation! I only know this tidbit as I worked at Icon for 3 years. With very few exceptions, all of Home Depot's material is supplied by them.

    I don't think you needed to make those crossovers because you're receiver seems to have enough outputs that you could separate the high and low frequencies to separate tracks in software before sending them to the receiver instead of after amplification

    I'd like to see a video describing the bill of materials, just to understand the overall cost of this project, not counting the cost of the 3D printers since you already own them.

    The sand used might not have been the best for this purpose. Paver (aka polymeric) sand is coated with a binder which is activated when wet. I'm not sure this will be a problem or not, but it sounds like you wanted "Play sand".

    Did you sterilize the sand before you filled the speakers with it? If not, expect... THE HATCHING! Especially if it's not 100% dry.
