    I've had my S3H's for about 3 years now in my 15'x23' home studio, and I LOVE them! They're great for both mixing, and pleasure listening. I do appreciate the DSP EQ. Generally, I have the Hi Shelf at -0.7 dB, and a Lo Shelf at +0.3dB, and then a tiny mid bass boost in the right channel only, because my left speaker is closer to a side wall. Sadly, I cannot have my monitors perfectly symmetrical in the room, but the EQ has helped me balance the mid bass between the 2 channels. ADAM's software control for the EQ is VERY clunky, but better than nothing, I suppose. When shopping monitors, I demoed a pair of ATC SCM100's in my studio, and while impressive, I just did not warm up to them. I found the mids+highs to be cold and harsh. Maybe that's "accuracy" but I didn't find pleasure in listening to my favorite music on the ATCs. I use the S3H's as mid-fields sitting atop stereo 15" subs. Their low end is adequate, but you really need subs to move air below 40Hz. I do wish the DSP had a LF rolloff filter. Weird that they would not have that for crossing over to a sub. BTW... the 50watt amp on the tweeter is Class AB, not class D. These speakers have phenomenal dynamics!! Highly Recommended.

      The LYD48 is pretty good to be honest. However, they sound a bit short of what the new genelecs or barefoots can do for virtually the same price. Transient detail and treble are really nice but the stereo imaging and sonic separation just isn't there in my opinion. Bass response is fast and accurate, yet could use another octave. Mid range is up to par. The high end is great around 2-8k but i feel like it begins to get dull after that point.

    I’m very strongly with you, Mark, about DSP on my monitor speakers. My message to the manufacturer: “I’m happy with bass compensation for free-space, half-space as well as very subtle HF adjust to compensate for listening distance, but that’s about it. Give me, to the best possibility, the RIGHT dynamic and static response. The fruit of your best efforts and experience. I can correct both my environment and my installation and don’t want you to pretend to work that out for me with marketing-friendly DSP.”

I will be working as an engineer there once it's all setup and we've tried to include an AES Output Array for any outboard or Dante systems we're using, but it's very interesting that you feel the AES has a nicer response as far as monitors are concerned. Hi Jaap! They’re great speakers, but I didn’t like the mid range. I think it’s crossed over fairly high with the bass drivers (1.2khz-ish?) and lacked the dynamism and detail that their larger models that use the Volt VM752 mid driver exhibit. When I heard in other reviews that these monitors perhaps didn’t go quite low enough, I didn’t realise that meant you had to stand up to listen to them.
    These Adams monitors are possibly above the price bracket for some (many..?) of us... but, if your ‘actual’ monitor-bracket is a fuck-off massive ATC speaker, I suppose they could seem like a bargain.
    So, no ripping the front off and stuffing it with concrete this time?
    Yep deffo’,... I wouldn’t want ‘any’ DSP in a monitor, at all.
    Actually, though... the more I hear about the Neumanns... eg: they’re not over-egging the mid-range as much as these... the more I’m tempted towards them (not least as they’re at the top of my own meagre price point potential). Maybe we need a PDP recommended speaker for different prices... a grand... two grand... three--- etc.

      With most RME interfaces for example you can use their ARC USB remote control and freely assign the main rotary controller to the AES output. I think Apogee can do that as well.
      That way you're practically adding a hardware controller that controls the interface's mixing software which then controls the AES level. It's still through software but more hands on.

    I'm no traditionalist (but I am old), however I do agree with Mark on this one. This kind of manually-adjusted DSP on monitors at this price point is.... a strange choice. If your room isn't already pretty sorted, why on earth would you be spending this amount of money on a pair of monitors. Dare I say the DSP on the fourth generation KRK Rokits makes a lot more sense (and actually, it looks like it's implemented a lot more intuitively). I honestly just can't imagine thinking "my room isn't ideal - I know, I'll spend thousands on monitors with built in DSP to compensate for my dodgy room".
    Interested to hear these though. Generally have good experiences with ADAM stuff.

    • @scissorkicks
      @scissorkicks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add - the one DSP system I've been impressed the most with is the Genelec GLM system, which relies on a measurement mic to calibrate the monitors to the environment. I've found it fairly subtle in the changes it makes, and have never had any issues with it in terms of translation.

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We’re actually doing a video on top down mixing but, spoiler alert, I’m not a fan. I think having some sort of chain on your stereo out before you’ve even started the mixing process is a pretty ridiculous way to go about doing things, and somewhat akin to me deciding I want to slap a pair of Pultecs over someone’s master before I’ve listened to it, just because ‘they sound great’ or I haven’t used them for a while! Pretty much every stunning track I’ve had the pleasure of working on in all the years I’ve been not only mastering, but recording, producing and mixing, have started with a damn good recording of an amazing performance and generally needed very little processing at the mix stage, and often nothing at all at the mastering stage. I could also give you a list of hundreds of label projects I’ve mastered where the songs have come in, I’ve listened and thought “wow that sounds incredible”, made sure it’s the right level for the various distribution platforms and done nothing else at all. Top down mixing is also generally a bad approach for the beginner - if they send a mix to me that’s over processed in the master bus department then the mix nearly always falls apart if I ask them to back the compression off a bit, or if the snare is too bright but the vocal is about right, and that’s coming from an EQ on the output rather than channel EQ. It’s ‘easier’ to mix into compression, because that does a lot of the work for you, but you don’t learn how compression works that way, and it’s far better to learn to record in a way that means you don’t even need compression, or very little, rather than slapping it on the stereo out to begin with! If you’re Andrew Scheps, no problem. If you’re not at that level then get it right at the earliest stages possible.

    Hi thanks a lot and very nice monitors indeed It would be nice to have tweeter and dome mid flange that can be rotate on the same speaker this would avoid the need of a vertical version ?
    It is just a matter of making a squared flange that can work vertical and horizontal Moreover i like very much the fact that the V dispersion of the tw and mid are more restricted to avoid reflections i guess Just i dont understand why the H disperion is less restriceted Also side walls can be very nasty Kind regards gino

      I think it is a very smart and handy concept
      As i said it is only a matter to make square flanges for the driver instead of rectangular
      Moreover it seems to me that they have mantained a certain H dispersion and reduced more the V one I like speakers with narrow and constant dispersion
      Clearly this will limit the sweet spot size but in a domestic environment could be a nice thing

      As the email has already been sent though, you won’t be able to get the link from our email list until we send another one out, so I’d advise joining the discord and I’ll point you in the right direction. As I said we will be announcing this to TH-cam shortly anyway, but it was a sneak peak for our community.

    Hmmmm... I am not convinced. I am an old hifi nerdy engineer. I fell in love many years ago with a real AMT tweeter, the first one, doctor Heil design, used for the first time in ESS AMT1 model. That was the best tweeter I have ever heard in my life.
    All the following AMT realizations I had a chance to hear were not comparable with the original. I need to live 2 or 3 weeks with an Adam system to check if they solved engineering issues.
    Some minutes of a chaotic listen in a musical instruments store did not satisfied my nerdy dreams expectations. I hope you are right.
    In the meantime I keep on using my Dynaudio Esotar tweeters in my self built monitors.

      I think they have!.... I'm 55 and I've lived with many a domed tweeter, and I find the S3H's tweeter to be the clearest & non-fatiguing tweeter I've ever owned. That said, I do keep the Hi Shelf set to -0.7dB at 4k, and they sound perfect to me. In the Vintage King showroom, I was A/Bing the ADAMs with the Focal Trio's, and found that I had to cut the tweeter by -.5dB to match the brightness of the Focal's. I spent well over an hour playing music I brought in, and I preferred the sound of the ADAMs. (no diss to the Focal's, which were very good, and very pretty).

    What brand/model are the speakers you mentioned in the back?

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are various speakers in the background of most shots, so I’m going to take an educated guess and say that you’re looking at the clip with the Kerr Acoustic K100 :)
      Hopefully that’s the right one!

    How did you manage to do this whole review without once mentioning E.T.?

    Another thing to consider here is depth. Another channel talked about these and mentioned that they are similar to ns10 in terms of “depth” whereas other speakers like ATC’s are more 3D sounding and have that space. Maybe that’s what you mean by plasticity?

    Honestly I really support your dudes content, but how are you gonna compare the KH310 drivers with that adam. The adam is almost twice the price. its 1800 vs 3000. Not a fair comparison at all IMHO, you could have at least mentioned the price difference. Also it would be an interesting topic I think to open up talking about sealed cabinet speakers vs ported btw. keep it going my dudes

      Thanks Joost, and yeah, I know, they’re at very different price points, it’s just my hatred of the KH kicking in!

      @@PresentDayProduction Still don't get it though but ok your an ATC snob xDDD (edit: I actually worked on the scm 45 in a studio once and I gotta say I don't think the difference is 7k big, but on the other hand if I got used to them I would probably value it more)

    It is very frustrating to hear that a 2.5k monitor isn't a good fit for mastering as well.

    Atcs are a different beast, its silly to think they’re as good.. Ive got the S3Vs and they’re good at revealing mids/highs but nowhere as musical.
