There is a difference between aggressive and assertive. Aggressive is negative, with fear and worry, not trusting. On the other hand, assertive is the opposite. It's confidence, positive, believing that anything is possible.

Regarding Simon Peter's reaction to Matthew asking for forgiveness, I believe there are two things you have missed. (1) Peter started softening towards and respecting Matthew from their time seeking Mary. Then throughout the show as he led the group and made sure everyone was taken care of, he included Matthew. Even at the campfire the night before, he made specific mention of being sure Matthew had his place to sleep prepared. So it would seem in his heart there had developed a turning of forgiveness, or more like he moved on from that, but he never really faced or dealt with it head on, more like it was something that existed like that annoying hum in the background. (2) Human psychology. When Matthew apologized, it caused a resurfacing of all that hurt and pain. It's easy to spiritualize what we *should* do, but we need to see through the eyes of grace, that wounds can be so deep that you can't just brush the pain aside that easily. Peter *needed* that time to wrestle with his feelings and his pain before he could make the choice to extend forgiveness. We are often too harsh with people, thinking they have to jump through the right spiritual hoop at a moment's notice. But that's not how we are built. I'm glad the script of The Chosen played it out this way.

I completely agree. Because Matthew is such a sympathetic character, many viewers see him as the victim. Because Simon is such a forceful character few have sympathy for him. I believe Simon gave more to the relationship than many give him credit for. Matthew, though knowing he almost destroyed Simon's life, played the victim and expected Simon to suck it up forgive him and move on. In Christianity we harm people by expecting instant add water and stir repentence and many end up stuffing their feelings and emotions in such an unhealthy way. If you step on my foot accidentally of course I can forgive you easily. But if you maliciously step on my foot, I have a more to process. What's most important is the desire to obey even when it is hard. I hope Grafted sees that (as 2 people who have leadership roles they have to counsel more deeply)

I visited Ceasarea Philippi back in 2019. There's cave situated pretty far back in the rocks with a large boulder inside, and the stones are stained with a blood/rust color. According to our tour guide, the people would sacrifice their infant children in this cave to appease Pan or Baal's wrath. I remember him saying that it was this specific place that was known as "The Mouth of Hell". It is here where Jesus renames Simon as Peter and tells him "on this rock I will build my Church". To this day, I still see that cave whenever I read Matthew 16. Jesus being identified as the Christ here is huge, not only because of his role as the Messiah, but his victory over death is declared right in front of Satan's stronghold. Wow!

You can forgive someone from a distance if they don't repent. Forgiveness doesn't mean treating the relationship like it's fine if someone is constantly sinning against you. One thing that helped me to forgive those who sinned against me without repentance is telling myself, "This person must be so lost and so far away from God that they don't even realize they sinned against me."

The first episode I watered up when Andrew found out about John The Baptist, the second episode I watered up when Peter forgave Matthew, the third episode I watered up when Rema was killed, the fourth episode I teared up when Thomas was trying to stop crying over Rema. But also when Jesus watched the red grapes turn into wine that looked like blood. When Gaius comforted Jesus, that was it for me. I felt jealous of Gaius for doing what I would have done in a New York minute.

Forgiveness is for the giver, not the recipient! Holding on to the anger n resentment only hurts ourselves! N how can we hope to be forgiven for an entire lifetime of egregious sins by Yeshua/YHWH, if we were never willing to forgive what are, in the grand scheme of things in this life, infinitely minor sins against us, here???
N as Simon, he had clearly already forgiven Matthew in practice; he just couldn't bring himself to officially let go n forgive him out loud, in that moment... that's what I see, in the show...

  • @rachelblanco1656

As someone who struggles with the sin of unrighteous anger and holding a grudge, I found Matthew's last few sentences in his apology to Peter very hard to receive. It went from heartfelt to sounding almost trite very quickly. Peter's choice to walk away actually showed incredible growth. The Simon of two years ago would have boxed Matthew's ears. And, for Peter to return and offer forgiveness to Matthew within a day... I was really blown away by it. It made the reconciliation so much more powerful and believable. It was convicting for some of us whom (in the abstract, of course) find extending forgiveness a challenge.

I disagree with the idea that your speed to forgive is linked to your closeness to God. It sounds good but I don't believe that's true. I think some sins against us plant deeper roots than others, and often the victims of some traumatic events have to do a lot of work (praying and being counseled) to overcome and forgive.

On the topic of the Binding and Loosing, there's an interesting lesson from the Hebrew that may have been well understood by the disciples:
The words "bind" and "loose" may well have been variants of the words אסור and מותר (Assur and Muttar)
Assur could mean any of these (or more): Bound, Forbidden, Captive
Muttar, could similarly be: Loosed, Allowed, Liberated.
There is a morning prayer Jews today still pray, Baruch Mattir Assurim (ברוך מתיר אסורים), which means "Blessed is the Liberator of Captives".
This would very likely have been part of the linguistic context the disciples would have read this speech through.

      Shalom Shalom,
To deny that Peter was seen as a leader within Messiah's community would be a mistake. But I think one thing this show should be teaching is that what we tend have been led to believe according to tradition may not line up with what scripture actually says.
Yeshua asks "who do men say that I am?" His disciples literally give different answers based on what they have heard people say. Then He asks "who do 'you' say that I am?" Meaning, never minds what men have been saying. What has God revealed to you about me? And Simon, by faith answers, by faith what God had revealed to him based on what he has seen, and what scripture has said.
To a point, the same approach must be taken even when it comes to answering questions like "who do we say Simon Peter was" as far as the papacy goes, among other traditions that men have taught throughout church history that scripture may actually disagree with, and there are quite a few traditionally taught things within the church that scripture does not agree with.

Hi Abby, I've had this problem too. One thing that helped me was realising that I am not my own judge - judgement is the job of God alone. Because Jesus has paid the penalty for your sins - ALL of them,if you have trusted Jesus as your Redeemer and believe He is who He says He is, then God has declared you free from the penalty of sin. Can you agree in your heart, that Jesus's sacrifice was all that was necessary, sufficient? Have you turned away from the sin in that "certain area of your life"? I had to pray a prayer of repentance for trying to take the job of judgement off of God for myself! I had to LET GO of that and give it to God, and submit in trust to Him. I hope this makes sense 😊. I'll pray that repentance will be a great blessing to you, and you will find yourself FREE to follow Jesus with your whole heart, bringing honour to Him and joy to you ❤.

Remember too, all that you said, for the inevitable NEXT occasion/commitment of sin. "All" means every sin contnually, not future sins, as we walk the steps of sin, repentance, forgiveness, given and received, with the Lord, requires this ONGOING process, lest we become complacent and disconnected from others and the Trinity, as Peter and Matthew were from each other.

This has to be a daily process for me because of how hard it is. I can't just say, oh I agree that I'm forgiven from it, and that's it. It's a daily process and battle, truly learning to accept His forgiveness for this and leaning on His grace. All of us have "things" we need to work on. To be fully repentant is to continually be working with God and asking Him to purify us. No one is perfect or even close to it. I've declared myself forgiven and free of this before and I actually fell deeply into it years ago. I have to have a different approach and apply His grace and love to my life every day in all areas.

I also was in greek and I liked the myths as fairy tales revealing few secrets to me. And also fine theme - not to be capturable by death through love to what Jesus is. Be well both.

I was watching a short of Mary returning to camp after she fell away. In that exchange, Jesus says, "I forgive you. It is over". The same thing Peter says.
    I just found that interesting.

In the segment about binding and loosing and showing Yusuf with the key, I was thinking about him binding his arm earlier, so binding and loosing.....

I thought it was an apt setting where he renamed Simon into Peter The Rock, but again it was another scene where they severely watered down actually what Jesus said

Peter asks Jesus about forgiving someone who has repented and asked for forgiveness; then continues to sin (against Peter), repent, and ask for forgiveness.
why is the repentance and asking for forgiveness not significant?

As a wife, I love gift cards lol. But it's hard to use them if the gift card doesn't come with the gift of time to use them (aka watching the kids while I use them).😀

Can you imagine if all the Romans were actual Italian actors speaking in their native language? 😅

In fact the language most spoken was Greek that it was the "English" of that time.
Latin was spoken by the authorities.
Italians speak Italian and not latin.

Sorry one needs to repent to receive forgiveness from the Lord and others.., Yes we are commanded to forgive or be ready to forgive, if and when someone has sinned against us.

We are working on reaction videos for each episode! Some of our team was traveling and attending to other commitments so we're working to catch up on reactions now. We did a livestream before the premier of the Chosen finale this evening to talk briefly about the season as a whole. Full reactions are coming soon!

Wasn't Nathaniel REALLY the first, on the show AND scripture, to declare yeshua the true king of Israel, n messiah???
ALTHOUGH, Peter was the first to declare He is the Son of the one true living God.... so I guess that makes the difference???

In response to the forgiveness issue, when Jesus died on the cross he forgave our sins, past present and future.
When he preached if you don't forgive your brothers, your Father and heaven cannot forgive you. That was the old covenant, but Jesus ushered in the new covenant when he died on the cross. So BELIEVERS are forgiven for their past sins, their present sins, and their future sins. Praise the Lord. This does not mean we shouldn't confess our sins but since He has already forgiven us we don't have to continually seek His forgiveness.

43:00 "There is no unity without humility." So profound, then tying in Philippians 2 how Yeshua demonstrated fully what true humility means. So good!

I do wish you had shown the talk that Simon had with Jesus after Matthew asked for forgiveness. It is just so true that we often need Jesus’ help to be able to forgive and it is not easy. For all the complaints that people make about The Chosen, scenes like this are the reason why I love this show. And discussions like this video are why I love your channel.

One day I went down a rabbit hole and decided to google map everywhere they said they walked in Season 2 to try and figure out how much time had passed between events before I came to the conclusion that it's a show and time between stops requires suspension of disbelief on the part of the audience lol
