If you don't like messing around with attachments and anchors, then loop bands are a better choice. Tube bands are better for fine tuning, providing different exercise angles. If you're serious about band training, then you should do both. Health and good physique are worth investing in.
Nicely explained. I started out with tube style bands (Bodylastics), but have switched over exclusively loop style bands now. I do have accessories for them such as a bar, plate, handles and carabiners for heavier exercises such as RDLs and squats, but otherwise I find it easier to adjust resistance on the fly with loop bands.
For me I use loop style resistance bands , and I like them , as you said they are great for heavy lifting and take less space. The cons you can eliminate it by wearing good quality training gloves.
Been watching for a while and I'm finally buying undersun bands this week, as well as triangular carabineers and good handles to attach to said carabineers. Been hesitating on them forever but your testimony to their quality was amazing. Can't wait!!
Hey Dave, first time watching your channel. You seem really genuine and I’ve already subscribed. I appreciate you are not a screamer, and you really give explanation and options. Look forward to digging into your site!
I got me tube bands set and planned a workout. Last time i was in a gym was about 20 years ago so i expected to use relatively low resistance. When i tried to use them, they never felt hard as it would with weights. I see video of people pushing it with single band and i am out of shape and single 50lbs band is easy? Could it be the bands? they weren't on the cheap side. I got loop bands and i really like it. I can adjust on the fly by changing how i stand on them or where i grab them. Even in the last rep, i can just change widen my grip a bit to allow me to finish it. Yes, i can't fully track where i grab the band, but i don't think it should matter. I just do the max i can depending on my status that day. Anyway, great channel. I have just started following the no attachments series.
@@DisciplineDave Great video! Just a few of my ideas and a bit of my experience, also why I do prefer tube style bands. A looped style band can only be stretched to around 200% its original length, so 1 meter normal or length 2 meters stretched length. The loop means it has double the resistance but half the travel and also double the increase in resistance (as you stretch it). Tall people cannot do shoulder press and for many exercises like deadlift they provide little to no resistance at the bottom. A tube style band can be stretched to 300 to 400% its original length and because of that they only increases the resistance slightly as you stretch them (more constant resistance). I have bands that go from 54cm all the way to 216cm. This makes them practical as you'll always have good resistance no matter the exercise or how/where you attach them, the travel is just far greater. Also you can; - Grab them just like a looped style band, for example for a band pull apart or shoulder dislocates - Combine bands, for example if you have 4 bands of 15lbs and 2 bands of 45lbs you can get resistance from 15 lbs to 150 lbs and everything in between. This means you don't need many (heavy) bands so it's probably not heavier or less compact than a set of heavy looped bands. For both looped and tube style there are bands with a fabric cover, these are safer to use (less likely to snap) and way more comfortable in contact with your skin than the latex bands without a cover.
I got tube tube bands with handles, door anchors, ankle straps. Helps me target inner chest, shoulders and triceps. And it's excellent for traveling around.
Yeah. I take mine, when I leave the house. I used medical transportation. To go to my doctor's appointments. While I am waiting on my ride. I can pull these, out of my book bag. Workout. While I'm waiting.
Great video I use loop bands. I find with a little ingenuity you can do almost any exercise with them. However the best type for someone is the ones that will be used consistently and properly. Thanks
Thank you Dave. I've been out of the gym for about 8 years now, live very rural and that was my excuse not to work out since the nearest gym is a 60 minute drive away. Secretary spread has set in 😮and I'm in my 50's now, but I'd love to get back to having a strong physique. I feel like I'm starting from scratch again! I've got my rebounder for cardio and I was getting bored with the 3lb dumbbells. I think I'll look into the tube bands to start. Blessings!
This channel is great! Love this type of informative videos, I would love to see more. I totally agree with you, loop style bands are perfect for heavy compound movements like squats or rows. Another great move to do with those are hipthrusts, you just put both ends of your loop band under your feet and place the band on top of your hips or things (above your knees). That feels like doing heavy barbell hipthrusts. Loop bands on the other hand are great for isolation moves like facepulls, bicep curls and even glute kickbacks. I personally think that the ultimate way of training is doing a combination of resistance bands and calisthenics.
I look at how you use the resistance bands. It depends on how much resistance you are after to start with and the convince on what you have on hand. You are right with what exercise you are trying to accomplish with working the muscle. Small muscle would require light tube bands or rehab bands. Larger muscles require loop bands.
I had tubes, then went to loop BUT I purchased a bar, door stop and handles. IMHO the handles were fairly worthless but adding the bar and door stop to the loops the loop bands are all anyone could need.
door stop I got from UnderSun, the bar from Dicks Sporting Goods. Finally realized I don't need handles if I use gloves. Some exercises you can use the door stop in conjunction with the bar. Definitely can get pretty creative.... never stop finding new ways/exercises. lol
Great video. you and James Grage I consider you both are the most experts in resistance bands training. You know what are you taking about. It is so annoying to see people talking shit about resistance bands training.
Yea, but don't worry about those people. I love the look on people's faces when they ask me "How much do you bench" and my rely is "I don't know, because I do it" and they look so confused. 😂
Loop style bands just feel like they can stretch longer and also not lose their elasticity as quickly compared to tube bands. I buy pretty expensive loop bands as well as expensive tube bands so they're both pretty high quality, but the tube bands just never feel like they have the same resistance. They feel a bit lighter and they do stretch more over time. I just feel safer using loop bands. I've been able to hook up specific carabiners to my loop bands so I can do the majority of exercises that are done with tube bands now. There are just a handful of exercises that I don't do with the loop bands because it's a weird angle and it looks like it may pinch, so I don't want to risk damaging my loop bands.
I can't believe I actually did the same approach as you by buying carabiners to my loop bands because I wanted to have both at the same time. 😂. I'm pretty new and I bought only loop bands thus far. May I ask, how do you pull off the tube exercises? Are you using a door handle or smthn? I think that most exercises can be done with carabiners in general, even loop style exercise (and of course gloves for extra safety).
Thanks a lot! I didn't know about a whole door attachment like that. Will definitely buy. Btw, what's your workout schedule? I'm considering as a beginner to start with Dave's loop style no attachments playlist that covers whole body. Will try over time to do pullups and pushups, bands can help with that thankfully
I bought a bar which the bands attached to. I wonder if a good video might address how these bars compare to the different types of bands and which type of band you should use with them.
I bought some carabiners, door anchors, and a couple metal handle grips that allow me to easily slide the loop band on (they provide the same grip as a dumbbell). Now I've got much more versatility than tubes.
Great video. By any chance do you have (or maybe plan to make) a video about taking proper care of loop bands? storage, cleaning, those kind of subjects?
I bought a tube the other day cause it’s my first band purchase and they wear $8 while the loop were $30 and I had no ideal what to do with the loop band, the lady on the box was doing leg workouts so and I wanted something more versatile and thought tube with handles was perfect.
When i first seen bands when i was a teen I'm 33 now,so when i was a teen i first found out of bands and was seeing old infomercials and it was mostly for rehab I had got mine 4 years ago which were tubes and it added up to 200 pounds Now they have bands that you only need 1 jumbo one which they now are called serious bands its amazing how tech can do that
Great video and channel D Dave. Learned how to use resistance bands when my gym was closed and have continued to use bands ever since. . Wish I had found your channel earlier. Your thoughts resonate with me as I have gone thru a lot of different types of bands, so thank you. I’m a + 50 and lifetime free weight user; do you have any vids or workouts geared toward people like me. Again, appreciate you vids and channel.
I have one question about tubes. Doesn’t it affect your balance when you step on them to do exercises like squat or rowing ? It seems that it is big chunk of bands under the feet. Nobody talks about this.
Which would you recommend for a wheelchair user? I have recently started a rehabilitation program in hospital. I have been in hospital 5 months and just recently I have been able to get in my wheelchair 4 days a week. I have been using a resistance ribbon to exercise to regain some upper body and core strength. I anchor it to various locations around my room, including my bed. The bed is pretty good as I can change its height to give me a greater variety of exercise options. When I get home I will a little more limited in my options except for a door. I also have been using a 5 kg dumbbell at present and I will probably invest in a few when I go home eventually. I really want to become fitter and more mobile within my chair once I’m out of hospital so I need something that will maintain my new found enthusiasm for exercising.
Thanks for this video! I’m a girl and like having soft hands. I’m also a beginner so I’ll stick to the tube style. Maybe when I get stronger I’ll go to the loop bands.
The biggest problem I find in loop bands is wrist position when pressing for example shoulder press ,the wrists are pushed back, infact any press done pushes the wrists back ,tubes when used with handles isolate more precisely on a muscle, for me any pully type movement or press is better on tubes, for dead lifts and legs loop style are better,I also noticed lot of people show there elbows locked when pressing for shoulders for example that's wrong as far as I understand, elbows should never be locked it releases the tension, just my thoughts
I got these Rogue tube bands with the handles , they seem made well , but no door anchors ? or hooks .. anyone have experience using these ? Rogue tube style
Dear Dave, unfortunately I would like to use undersun bands, but I live in Italy and it seems difficult to get them. Could you point me out some good bands selling in Europe via Amazon
Something I've never been clear about with the flat loop bands you can get. If you have a loop that has resistance of up to 125lbs is that just on one length of the loop pulled apart, or two loops held side by side as if they were one?

Can i get huge improvements only using tube resistance bands and dumbbels at home? Long story short:A few months ago(aprox 3 months ago) i started using chest expanders(it uses resistance bands made from rubber/ older ones use springs).I started working out without a specific schedule. After 2 months i saw some small improvements in terms of strength(i got from 0 chin ups to 3-4 for my weight 135lbs even 3-4 is a bit too less) but very small almost not noticeable improvements in looks. After those two months i wanted to see a bigger change so i started using dumbbells (upto 20lbs per dumbbell that i can change( i usually use 12-16 lbs). Now i bought some tube style resistance bands(upto 100lbs combined currently using 40 lbs for the beginning but i cant reach failure ).Should i reach failure to get bigger? Cause after all these months i got doms only one time and that lasted a bit so i am concerned that i have bad tehnique/don't push myself enough and if tube resistance bands will help me.
