Great video and explanation. Compression position is like EQ, it’s about taste and preference. I tested mine at different places in my pedal board and I can tell you that you have to tested and use your ears to know where you want it. If you have different basses, same thing, tested switching bass. I have a 9 pedal pedalboard including the compressor : tuner, ls2 for blending dry with a overdrive and a fuzz pedal that are in the loop of the ls2… then ls2 go to a wah, reverb, delay, pre-amp di. I’ve tried the compressor at the end, in the middle (after the wah) that was my first thought where it should go, but was finally the worst place, kind of tone suck my dirt pedals… I’ve tried in the ls loop to have it blend, so try 1st, middle & last, but dind’t like it after I’ve tried before (after the tuner) and it’s where the compressor finaly being placed. Like you I prefer to have my signal compressed ealier and keep a more consistent signal when I add effect in the signal. Also easier when I switch basses from single coil to humbucker or active, I just have play with the level of my compressor to adjust from a bass to another…

Well said! Specially the last part about switching basses!

I give myself both options with one overdrive before the compressor for more dynamic songs and one after the compressor for where im picking hard the whole song

Wrathchild! I have a compressor that is “at home” on either side of the overdrive, or even in the effect loop of the amp. I find it’s more useful when set as a “peak limiter” when placed after the drive. But I use it as a mild 4:1 comp before O.D. Great videos, thx Ivan!

Which comp do you have? Thanks for watching, Andrew!

Keeley Bassist. Similar to the Cali in how you can use the light to set threshold, but not as many features. It’s funny, but we have a lot of gear in common- Mesa head, Mesa 15 and 12, subway di, G&L instruments, yyz pedal. I think since we like the same stuff, I’ll recommend the Vulcan bass overdrive to you. It’s my always on sound that you use the darkglass for. It brings amazing midrange without messing with your bass’s natural sound.

@@IvanBassist so... now that i checked it with my setup i see that it really works both ways, but i prefer to have compressor (empress) first and then drive (vintage microtubes)

Nice! I usually have it at the beginning of the chain, too

Funny, but coincidentally today I tried a dirt pedal (TC Mojo Mojo) on a low gain, Geezer-sounding setting, but put on the spectra comp on my TC combo amp, after. Sounded good; I can dig in and get more drive by playing harder, but the frequency response and overall level stayed consistent. Pretty cool sound.

Really useful video on compression. I have a Hyper Luminal and stick it at the end of the chain. Always on. I just tweak the ratio to suit the gig.

Yea I have an optical /tube and love it
It really take some nasty mids out of the signal and sweetens things
I drive a micro amp into it
Signal chain > wah > sub > fuzz > qtron > hxstomp > micro amp > guru comp > nemesis delay > amp
I’ve tried running the hx last and this way sounds substantially better idk if it the output impedance of the nemesis or combo of that and comp after
But I love what I’m getting atm

I keep my Boss OD before Ampeg Opto-Comp to keep the drive variation. But I have a Scrambler in the effects loop (as it's shown in the SCR-DI and BA circuits-after the preamp). The Scrambler really seems to thrive in the higher post-pre-amp gain but there seems to be something about it being there that still let's it react to dynamics pretty well. But with the kind of OD it is, I do want it to be more consistent than the Boss OD. So I get options. (I use the Scrambler more because it's milder and fits into way more situations, kinda has a tube power section vibe).

I use the Billy Sheehan Pedal which combines clean and distortion. It has a compressor as the last step so it’s after distortion but this pedal is first in my chain. Since it’s set to low gain it probably acts as first in the chain. I’ve got a boost pedal after it.

Put one before and one after any effects pedal that changes or alters the tone you are trying to achieve say for example put one also after your EQ.

It can be nice to have the comp after fuzz to give some bounce back to the notes and even drive the comp

Before or after or before and after? (@7:13 Ah, there's when you suggested before and after). I know the SGT-DI's variable one-knob compressor comes AFTER the tone controls and SGT circuit. I am skeptical about the usefulness or effect of that compressor, but I plan to try putting my OE Cali76 Compact Bass in front of an SGT-DI, using the one-knob compressor at the back end.

Amigo disculpa que no sé mucho inglés. La ventaja de el compresor antes esque te da mas salida pero menos dinámica y el overdrive antes es que es menos salida y más control? Creo que ese entendí 😅.

    • @IvanBassist
      @IvanBassist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hola!

Hi Ivan. Recently, I bought a NU-X MLD Bass Preamp+DI. I also run a TC Electronic Hypergravity compressor on my pedalboard. Would you place the comp first in the signal chain?

the tone I'm going after is MESHUGGAH (for life) and bass tuned @ 432 hz (forever)
Bass tuned to (u guessed it) Meshuggah tuning
    F A# D# G# C#
    Bass to
    1) Boss TU3 Tuner, to
    2) Ebs compressor, to
    3) Boss Metal zone (after this video) (high gain closer to bass), to
    4) Ibanez Tube Screamer (guitar) to'
    5) DOD Death Metal Pedal, to
    6) Darkglass B7K,to
    7) US Metal 21 rectifier to
    8) Ibanez Bass Tube screamer (TS9B),to
    9) Boss Bass Overdrive, to
    10) Boss Bass Equalizer, to
    11) Zoom B3 bass processor, to
    12) Noise gate and finally to
    13) EBS Amp / headphones.
I still have to tweak this up a bit, rearrange the order and let' 's see how that goes.
