I make it with chicken instead of fish too. It’s more hearty that way and tastes better.

I am eating this food as I am watching this video. I had no time to watch this video. I had to work fast as my family was very hungry. I cooked a big pot of Nombra Jok. My father bought a quarter of a huge fresh Salmon Fish for $31.00. I used half & made this recipe. The best Fish that Khmer people normally used is the Snake Head Fish. This fish was used for the texture of the meat, the softness, & the sweet taste. But you can substitute with fresh Salmon fish. Salmon Fish is also good to use to make this recipe.
Ginger - kaid. The roots in the Jar is called Ka-jier. It’s English name is Rhizome. You should used the frozen Rhizome instead of those in the Jar.

Elissa, nom bon jok tirk umprik is the one with the sweet mung bean sauce on the side with tirk somlar Khmer. I think it's from Battambang. I'm not a fan of it but my mom likes to make it. I prefer the original khmer style with coconut milk. I can't eat my nom bon jok without coconut milk. I think the reason why I don't like the umprik is because it's sweet and also without coconut milk. I enjoy your cooking. I can't wait to see you make nam ya. Thank you for sharing us your recipes.
