You can still do this by mapping Angle Jitter to Pen Tilt. The rotation will follow the pen direction as long as there is at least about 45 degrees of tilt. You don't have quite as much control to get a wide stroke just by rolling the pen in your fingers, but you wouldn't get that anyway unless you used a wide/flat pastel. Very informative. I had the pen already and didn't know it, came a package deal with a used Cintiq. Oddly it's already set up with rotation while the pro pen is setup with tilt as default. Not sure how you go about changing that if you want to.
I bought an artpen for barrel rotation a while ago and I can safely say that It did not bring the digital art experience any closer to traditional art. @jamesbullo Yeah, but there's something that still makes this pen incompatible with Samsung. I've tested it, and it doesn't work. The newer Wacom One stylus works but not older Wacom tablet pens.
@@stealthiestboy The thought crossed my mind, but I still do use my Wacom tablet every once in a while. Since my other stylus is raggedy, I'll hang on to the art pen.
I am loyal to my Wacom tablet only because of this pen. I can get much better deals and specs with Chinese products... but don't just because of this pen. It's great.
Now that the new apple pencil has barrel rotation, wacom might see this and make a new pen with rotation since they'll likely be more demand for it cause loads more people are gonna have barrel rotation from the new ipads
The only thing I considered switching to Wacom from XP-PEN for was Artpen's rotate function (but I also didn't want to take a 10 year old pen with 2k resolution).

Nice lil niche info here, thanks for the video Robert. Regrettably, I've never tried one myself. For those of you that refuse to pay a high price for getting one now, I can only recommend to keep your brush settings tab open, allowing you to rotate your tool via the software. Alternatively, one can create flipped or rotated versions of the same brush and use the brush-box add-on for easy access (this way you could have one row of the same brush, but in different orientations, easily selected via one tap). Not as intuitive as the rotating pen, and certainly far from a traditional feel, but it does the trick just as nicely. The same works with tool presets of course, though brush-box makes for a cleaner organization. Cheers, hope this helps! Have fun creating!
On a different note, I feel your pain Robert. As artists, we so much depend on our muscle memory. Being forced to adapt to other tools, when the existing ones work perfectly, can be very frustrating. Better stock up on those art pens now! :)
@@DigitalPaintingTipsyes and just because you can achieve same things in different ways does not make make it useless. I mean with this stance I could say crust canvas rotation is useless as I can rotate my arm or wrist right?

dude... I am so mad WHY wasn't there any marketing for this?!!! all these years whishing that I could draw just like on newspaper and charcoal pencil on the cintiq..
Yes like I work in gamedev and from the at least hounded otker pro artist I know it was just one apart from me who even had heard about it. And she though it was just the nib that was diffeeenr. She did not knew about barrel rotation. I actually started out with the Wacom 4D I think it was called which is the art pen but for intous 3 so well must had been 25 years ago or so. I lied that even better as the nib was wider. Basically it looked exactly as a typical wider marker pen.
Meanwhile Apple is planning to incorporate barrel rotation into their new tablets and pen. I hope they destroy Wacom which would be better for consumers, because monotomy is a bitch,
Easy way to dodge the "problem" is to switch between sharp and "flat" brush by pressing 1 button. It will be faster than rotate brush each stroke. Iam now a pro or experienced drawer, but it seem obvious.
I don't know but i own a like 50$ tablet and the pen tilt and stuff just works (far better than my wacom) sooo ... a shame that most companies don't do stuff right from the start but use it to get more money .-. but if one has the money to spare as an artist, congrats! :D
Why, its Wacom closing its stores? Get an iPad M2 and an apple pencil G2 and problem solved! LOL And you have a powerful IPad for the next 5 years, no need of the new M4 LOL

Not only did they nix eraser tips on their new pens, they don't even use barrel sensitivity now.. I bought one specifically for that option forever ago. What a joke.
Well, it happened. Apple just announced the new Apple Pencil Pro, and one of its new features is barrel rotation.
Are you serious. I’m in class on break! No words!
@@DigitalPaintingTips Rob, I said the same thing; I recently got my hands on two Art Pens after watching your video. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always good to have more than one tool in the arsenal with that feature and I don’t regret the purchase, but I still felt a tad sheepish after the news dropped today. 😅
Better to have an extra! Plus I still like working on bigger surfaces than the iPad!
But I did order a new Apple Pencil too! Lol
@@DigitalPaintingTips Mine should be in soon! And yeah, both tools can serve more or less the same function at different times. At home the Art Pen is ideal for larger Wacom displays, and on the go there’s the Apple Pencil Pro. Can’t wait to test them both!
wait a second! The recent pens can't rotate?
Nope. Not even the new Pro Pen 3.
They never could. Only art pen could barrel roll
yep and most importantly this stylus works with any wacom intuos pro tablet starting from intuos 4 up to intuos pro2, as well as cintiq.
Fortunately, I got the art pen a few years ago to replace the cheaply made regular wacom pen. I hardly use it though since I now do most my drawing on the Tab S8 Ultra.
Why not use it on your S8 Ultra? Samsung uses Wacom emr tech for their pens.
@jamesbullo Yeah, but there's something that still makes this pen incompatible with Samsung. I've tested it, and it doesn't work. The newer Wacom One stylus works but not older Wacom tablet pens.
Would you be willing to sell it?
@@stealthiestboy The thought crossed my mind, but I still do use my Wacom tablet every once in a while. Since my other stylus is raggedy, I'll hang on to the art pen.
I am loyal to my Wacom tablet only because of this pen. I can get much better deals and specs with Chinese products... but don't just because of this pen. It's great.
That’s exactly how I feel.
They are a Japanese company, however, all their products are also made in China.
that sucks! I've loved mine for ages...
good thing apple added this to their pencil pro.
Did Wacom finally fix their drivers? I think not, huion it is for me.
Same drivers
Now that the new apple pencil has barrel rotation, wacom might see this and make a new pen with rotation since they'll likely be more demand for it cause loads more people are gonna have barrel rotation from the new ipads
The only thing I considered switching to Wacom from XP-PEN for was Artpen's rotate function (but I also didn't want to take a 10 year old pen with 2k resolution).
Honestly, you don't notice the resolution that much. With a small tweak in settings, it feels the same.
its like 100$, right? i dont draw or anything, but am intrigued. should i bite the bullet and get one, just to be safe in case i decide to dabble with drawing? they are available-ish in my neck of the woods. and like i said, 100$. are there different models or? mine says art pen 4/5 something something. cheers.
Apple has barrel rotation, Wacom is cooked.
Isnt this useless because the same thing could be achieved by simply rotating the canvas?
Yes, but it isn't the same thing.
@@DigitalPaintingTipsyes and just because you can achieve same things in different ways does not make make it useless.
I mean with this stance I could say crust canvas rotation is useless as I can rotate my arm or wrist right?
@@litjellyfish yeah well I just ordered one and it cost me 185, I'll use it on my cintiq 27QHDT. I'll see how it goes and if it's worth it or not
It looks like the new apple pencil has all this functionality.
After care service is terrible and highly overpriced. I had two and first time I needed help they were zero help. Now the market is flooded with pens they really struggle.
I saw some of them on ebay but theyre like $100.00 or more.
I gave up on Wacom years ago. I am happy with my huion
The back of the package he shows says ART PEN but that looks like the GRIP PEN!
It's the ART Pen; they do look alike. But, perform very differently.
dude... I am so mad
WHY wasn't there any marketing for this?!!!
all these years whishing that I could draw just like on newspaper and charcoal pencil on the cintiq..
I know! Someone commented they were able to find one. Good Luck you might find one!
I hope they destroy Wacom which would be better for consumers, because monotomy is a bitch,
what? i'm drawing for 8 years and would love to know sooner that i needed to buy another pencil for it to work
Well.. that sucks, I was getting hyped till I heard about the parts, going to stick with the "manual" software rotation then
The next video will show you 5 workarounds. But if you can find one, I would. Best of luck!
Does he mean the GRIP PEN or the ART PEN? Cause I personally hate the ART PEN that comes with the wacom. The click button and thickness sucks
Art pen is different than the grip pen that comes with tablets
I think this works on Krita even with the regular pen
I have one of those and I don’t even use it 😅
Now Apple reinvents the Art Pen🤣
Lmao!! I bought mine 20 minutes ago!!🤣
So apple copy this technology on the new apple pencil and they claim they invented this tool
Do they? I did not get any such claim in their video?
Easy way to dodge the "problem" is to switch between sharp and "flat" brush by pressing 1 button. It will be faster than rotate brush each stroke.
Iam now a pro or experienced drawer, but it seem obvious.
And if you want to twist it in a continuous stroke motion how do you do that with keyboard toggles? Have 10 hotkeys your press every 0.1 second?
@@litjellyfish you really can live without it
First time I heard of this and its being discontinued? lol nice marketing wacom
🤣
I don't know but i own a like 50$ tablet and the pen tilt and stuff just works (far better than my wacom) sooo ... a shame that most companies don't do stuff right from the start but use it to get more money .-.
but if one has the money to spare as an artist, congrats! :D
Overpriced wacom deinovating again. Soon there will be no reason to stick with this brand.
😂
Why, its Wacom closing its stores? Get an iPad M2 and an apple pencil G2 and problem solved! LOL And you have a powerful IPad for the next 5 years, no need of the new M4 LOL
No thank you
lol
you kind of sound like kermit, hope your pen lasts you many many years.
I am painfully aware!!😂
3d pen has been killed as well.
And what? I tell you what. Wacom just make new ArtPen...ArtPen3. Curtain. Stop clickbaiting!
This is untrue. They made a Pro Pen 3 which DOES NOT have barrel rotation.
Thank you for telling about this, I did not even know that this pen existed so this will be a game changer and probably allot more enjoyable drawing on my Wacom tablet. I manage to grab the last one from a net store I manage to come over that had it. Bit steep in price, but if it can make me use my tablet more then its worth it. 😅
Happy to help! I will make a video to show you how to configure your brushes for it. Give me a week. I’m finishing up another video and will do it. Congrats!!🎉
@@DigitalPaintingTips Ooh that would been so helpfull😄❤️ Looks like yt algorithm was on spot for a change with showing this video and your channel..I managed to check out a few more before I went to bed, and I really like them so am looking forward to seeing your new videos 😄
@@PigPancake Thank you and I appreciate you!
model number plis
The art pen is KP701E2
Thank you you're awesome
Don't you think this could be done at the software level? Well the problem would be if wacom would implement this in their software.
The next video will cover 5 workarounds.
Barrel rotation? No real one needs hardware that has this features.
