  • This review breaks down the Harbor Freight Drill Press | Central Machinery 8 inch drill press.
This small drill press is also a bench top drill press and is great for the wood or metal diy hobbyists!

My summarized opinion of the drill press it likely will not hold up to extreme conditions; however, It is perfect for light to medium duty work and is a great addition to any hobbyist or DIYer's bench top as it's small profile makes it easy to work around without taking up a lot of space.
It's been a while since the last review on this channel but thanks to the success of the past reviews I have decided to start it up again!

Watched a couple of drill press videos before yours. None of them showed in detail how to change the belt. Good job buddy! Thanks for your time...👍

I second that. I'd also like to know how the depth gauge aparatus works. Obviously kind new at all this.

I would superglue a neodymium magnet (also available at HF) to the top of the drill press and use that to hold the chuck key. You could also just make some kind of a clip which it would snap into and bolt that to the top cover.

I was looking for a cheap small tabletop drill press and picked up one of these last year when I got a discount (always look for the special/sale/discount at HF). It's way better than a hand drill for precise work and it's good for occasional light and medium duty work. I have used it for drilling a circuit board with a high speed 0.8 mm bit (yes, very small) and small 1/4" holes in light steel. Mine has drilled true (at least for now). I replaced the cheap nasty hot dim light bulb with nice cheap bright LED bulb for about $5. It's much better for light and only gets just a little warm.

Use a spot drill first or punch to create a small conical point. HSS/Cobalt drills will walk. The point will help with guiding the drill straight while also assisting with atarting the cut.

I recently got one of these. It's a little inconvenient to change from a short bit to a long bit if that's needed for enlarging the same hole in the same place because the table needs to be lowered to do so and doing that makes me have to have to move the table and lose center.
I bought it for making one project just one time. If I was going to make the same project a LOT of times I'd go buy a more convenient drill press. It did OK with drilling 3/8 inch holes in mild steel as the biggest hole I needed to drill. The motor did get hot even though I didn't run the motor constantly, but it didn't get too hot to touch. It's an OK press for a person who won't use it every day.

Just got this two days ago, been eyeing on it and the wen, but don’t know about shipping from the depot reliable or not. But it’s been out of stock at my store for months! Even when they dropped the price it was out. And that day it’s just sitting there I snatched it up right away. I like it so far and I do amateur woodworking. Thanks for the tip on the tension of the belt. And I like your style short and sweet up to the point! Keep up the good work!

A very nice review and very informative. I solved the problem of the chuck key. No Boatswain Mate wants to have gear adrift. A small, rare earth N52 magnet and some JB Weld worked great for some other bench tools. I"ll pick one of those up as soon as I can find a 20% off coupon. I've got about 10 days of work for it. If it gets through that, great. If not, well within 30 days to return it.

Get a little retractable lanyard and attach it to the front. I do this with all my Drills really nice. I also have this little unit... got a free. .5hp Treadmill motor to replace the little one, variable speed + pulleys now.

I go the 620 Mini Drill Press and it does not have the light switch on the side like this one does. Does anyone know where it is or it just turns on by itself when the machine is turned on. Any answer would be appreciated

The table pushed down a smidge when there was pressure applied, this could give you a slightly cadiwompus hole.

I own this one and can attest to this happening. There are some models with a cast table. This one has a stamped one. It doesn't matter so much for shallow holes, but deeper than 1/2 and the run out will ruin it. I'm going to get a better press.

Is it a good thing when the spindle bearings sound like a horse chewing on rocks, or if the table flexes about 2 degrees under pressure, or if the spindle runout is...visible !!?? Save your money for a drill press you can be proud of.

Here is how you fix all those knocking sounds these drill presses make out of the box. Just a few adjustments and it will sound much better and keep any damage from occuring from loose parts which are very common in these drill presses. th-cam.com/video/NOUx4tBdKSA/w-d-xo.html

A typical mistake most people make it the drill press is running way to fast for metal . A drill bit will only remove so much metal efficiency. I used one of these for 5 years in a factory and didn't have any trouble drilling 5/8 thick metal . Just slow it down very slow .

  • @garygerard4290
    @garygerard4290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd have slowed the rpm's all the way down.
Given a choice I'd like to see you be able to reduce the speed by another 50%
It would have been easier to put the belt on the smaller, motor pulley first,
then move the belt to the larger spindle pulley.
Those look like cheap, hobby bits and the way it drills I'd guess the metal to be
    cold rolled, not tool steel.
thanks for posting this - the drill press gets a lot of use my shop
