Makes sense why they went with the zero gravity instead of the drill, it must've been easier to make the antigravity look visually appealing when implemented into a track's design. Although, I can't help but think how cool it would've been. Imagine for a second, you jump off a ramp, activate air glide mode, and then burrow into a wall that leads to an alternate path.
Feel like it would be better as an item. You get the spin drill from Mario Galaxy and can use it to find shortcuts and alternate routes. Otherwise you can just use it to burrow underground and become invincible for a while.
It amuses me how Double Dash had models originally from Melee. The final product ended up being one of the first games to use the current Mario aesthetic.
He didn't say when the game came out, he said when the game "resurfaced", which is a weird way of putting it but he means when the game's name was changed as the second trailer went out.
The drill item would be cool as a temporary underground to dodge attacks, tho they would have to make it more interesting by making it do something else otherwise it’s a worse boo
I remember some of those beta Mario Kart DS tracks as a kid on TH-cam, like the circle and the one with the grate looking track. I thought they were secret tracks were you had to do something special to unlock them or at least play on them.
I’d say the initial footage of “double dash” was either a tech demo or a *very* early look at the game where double dash didn’t even have proper models yet
I don't know, I kinda like that we ended up with antigrav. The drill idea sounds cool initially but as an entire gimmick with probably most of the nitros centered around it in some way doesn't really appeal to me. I might change my mind if we ever see a proof of concept in a future Mario Kart.
"When the game resurfaced as double dash, it looked like the game that came out" So when the game was released, it looked like the game that was released??😂
The drill would be cool if it brought you too and from a cave that's badically an wntire course on its own, and different parts are faster/slower and easier/harder on the surface and cave so you have to learn when its best to switch
I actually didnt know the original idea for 8 was a drill mechanic, kinda crazy since i was hoping that they'd add the drill mushroom in the next mario kart game with similar functionality
They were originally going to just attach a spin drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2 and call it a mechanic? Glad they went with something more interesting

Hold up. Since the beta Double Dash trailer used Melee models, that technically means that Smash Kart was real for a brief time! (Read on if you’d like the joke explained to you) I was joking. I didn’t actually think that they were making Smash Kart before switching to Mario Kart.
*Useless Mario Kart Fact* In Mario Kart 8 (and Deluxe) there is supposed to be a "Drift" stat like the one in Mario Kart 7: in Mario Kart 8 it's called "On-Road Traction". But it doesn't work because the SlipRt values for every level in the translation table are set to 0.75. On the Wiki you can actually see that every character and vehicle part gives a different value of On-Road Traction, but it's all for nothing since in the translation table all levels are the same (so all combos slip the same when drifting). The idea of On-Road Traction was probably scrapped at the last moment, that's why it still exists as junk code (they were too lazy to just delete the code lmao). Now we only have Off-Road Traction that is just known as Traction, Off-Road or Grip... and it doesn't work on actual off-road terrains. Thanks Nintendo!
What! are you absolutely serious? that's ridiculous I always wanted the drilling mechanic To dive in and out of the ground I would have preferred that very much so 😢
yea, i beat it lol. The tip is the use anyone but I used Yoshi with the Egg Cart, then i spam slight drifts to the right and as long as I don't mess up I win.
I hope Mario Kart 9 would add a Movie Mode, where all of the characters would be voiced by their movies actors, everything would get a movie-styled look, and the karts from the film would be unlockable.
Makes sense why they went with the zero gravity instead of the drill, it must've been easier to make the antigravity look visually appealing when implemented into a track's design.

It was a mixture of stadium and pinball and all of that changed. As it was going the MKDD route we mostly track detail and music and sound effects

Huh
Idk, that drill mechanic sounds really cool, they should totally bring it back for a future game.

The drill item would be cool as a temporary underground to dodge attacks, tho they would have to make it more interesting by making it do something else otherwise it’s a worse boo
I think the drill should come back, not as a gimmick, but as an item. ESPECIALLY with the newly added drill shroom
Mario kart for GameCube was just to show that there was a new Mario kart game being made
The Anti Gravity was a good idea and they should keep it forever
This has probably been requested before, but I’d love to see a ranking video of every course in this game from an expert competitive’s perspective.
the drill should definitely be an item. that sounds fun as hell.
I wonder what the new mechanic will be in the next Mario Kart game.

I feel like a Gamecube Mario Kart game that looked like Melee would've looked good.
The drill mechanic couldve been more interesting than anti grav, it just wouldve required so much more work
