Circling back to this video to say that KCCC had been my go to primer for the past 2 years, but as you said, UFD is more accessible so I was forced to use it when I couldn't get my hands on KCCC. I ended up loving it and have not used KCCC since!
Hey Kayla, great video! UFD is a gel that I use as a base gel, underneath a stronger holding gel. It’s nice to see the different results that are trialed when the application varies! I use it the way you have it laid out in your “interested to try method.” Because of its ingredients it does work as a really nice leave in but it is the main primer because of the amount of water it holds. The stronger hold gel I use captures the curls/coils that were created by UFD. I don’t use as much of the stronger hold gel compared to amount I use with UFD and my sets last me 7-10, can go weeks if needed, but I like to reset weekly. I found initially that there was a bit of a learning curve to use the UFD, knowing how much product to water ratio, but once you get the look and feel you like, it’s great. Again great video, I really enjoyed it😊
@@WhatTheKink Lol, that’s great that it worked for you that way! I find it works well doing it that way. Its my go to product and I find myself comparing other product performance to UFD.
Nice! I've used the UFD and love how it separates my curls, water on top of that and then use a mousse to set. I'll try using more of UFD and less off the mousse next time and see how that goes.
Your method is what I do as well (I live in FloraBama). I used UFD and Wetline for my honeymoon hair and it was laid for 12+ days at home and in Vegas. It is my favorite primer/leave in/whatever when I want lasting hair, but I can Never use it alone - sticky, never dries, reactive to humidity, low key a mess but it looks pretty. And I also prefer to use more UFD and less topper, though if my hair is soaking wet UFD spreads wonderfully so I don't use that much overall
Following the black girl curls method, I apply more UFD and lots of water. I use less of the firmer hold gel. My favorite combos are UFD topped with Obia custard or Jello Shot. UFD alone has always been hit or miss for me.
UFD curly magic is the one product that retains water/moisture in my hair better than leave-in conditioners. It acts like a sponge for water...which allows me to get great definition. I love curly magic under NLS Irish Moss styling cream, NLS okra gel, and Bomb A** Fro curl jelly. Love your review!
Not you trying something new before a party 😅 but everything worked out. I live vicariously through you using Frozen. I love the way it literally feels, (glides and foams). And you hit the nail on the head, UFD, it's more accessible than other botanical gels, that doesn't mean it's the best thing ever.
Wow 🤩 thanks so much Kayla for this QUALITY content. Seriously thank you so much for taking the time to try this product out in different ways over different days and give a through review and robust opinion. I know I’m one of those people who’ve STAYED asking you to retry this product and you DELIVERED. Whether or not you liked the product I was happy to watch and see you experiment which reminds me of the og TH-cam though I don’t really want to be experimenting too much these days outside of the hair care practices I follow now with BCG but it’s nice to try different combos and styling techniques like you’ve done in this video to get the desired finishe result.
I love UFD because I know how to use it. It’s a humectant that requires lots of water during the application. If you live in Florida you need a topper gel.
I have tried and tried and TRIED UFD. It's just not for me. I get the snagging as well when I use it as a base gel/leave in. And using it alone... Absolutely doesn't work for me especially in this Southeast Texas humidity. I'm new to the gel only method as KCCC has been my go to for years! But I keep trying! Thanks for all of your videos. 😊
Hey Kayla! Loved the way this vid was structured. It’s great seeing the product used with different techniques. I bought Camille’s rose curl maker during Black Friday and I’ll be trying it the same ways.
I have very dense, coarse coily hair. Definitely can not use UFD alone but I do enjoy it as a base gel/primer. Then I go in with my hard hold gel....which initially was I Create Hold (does nothing for my thick hair and can get flaky.......do not like it at ALL......I've tries it so many times and so many ways) but now I use Aunt Jackie Flax Seed Gel (not a botanical gel and maybe not the best but it works amazingly for my hair. I always get great results with it). Want to get my hands on Jello Shot, since I have heard it is botanical and gives great hold.
Great video ! I enjoyed watching you try it in different ways. I will always have a soft spot for Uncle Funky’s since it’s the first thing I tried during my initial 30 day detox from BlackGirlCurls. I still really like the scent.
Most coily and kinky haired girlies I watch top this with a harder hold gel, on its own for my hair doesn’t have longevity. Love it topped with jell-o shot and the Giovanni L.A. gel. To enhance curl clumping with this product I do one spritz per section of the camille rose lavender hair spritz ON TOP of UFD (doesn’t do well on bottom layer). Creates excellent clumps that are easy to separate.
I’m watching you apply it and your hair doesn’t look soaking wet. When I apply it I’ll even add more water after applying UFD, I also emulsify it in my hands before applying it to my hair. I use I Create Hold as a topper because I workout 4 days a week.
Interesting that my hair doesn't look wet. I did each application directly after removing the conditioner from my hair. There was no drying or wringing out of the hair between that rinse and the application of UFD. I also applied water after application. Maybe I cut that in editing? 🤔
I wasn't a fan of Ufd at first. There was a learning curve with the ratio of water. Like you I do apply all over my head but after I open up my to make sure there is enough . Then I put my topper all over and will section to smooth and rake. I thought al botanical were the same so recently I ran out so I bought curly magic. Surprisingly I prefer ufd or kinky curly. I think even eco slay gels will be in my top 5. I used the orange marmalade as a primer and on top the jello shot. It was amazing .
I use UFD as a base and Innersense I create hold as my topper. I’ve been perfecting my technique for the past year before I allow myself to try other gel combos. But so far these two have been giving A-1 wngs
My stylist and I’ve heard other stylists say if you want to use curly magic alone to apply and cover with a plastic cap for 10-15 minutes to really let the humectants do their job. Some even keep sections under the cap until they’re ready to work with that section. I’m also in Los Angeles so that’s a factor. I’ve also heard other stylists say how your hair conditions is how it will set. So perhaps the conditioning step has to be just right for you to see the magic in curly magic. Maybe it’s irrelevant but that’s what I thought of while watching this video.
I’m returning mine tomorrow. It breaks me out. I’ve bought UFD years ago and remember liking it a lot but had to stop using cuz it broke me out around my hairline. I had forgot all about it I think it’s the nettle that breaks me out. Also I’m protein sensitive and the new formula has hydrolyzed wheat protein
I enjoyed this video! Your hair definitely came out cute but I completely see what you’re saying about it not working as a sole styler for you. UFD alone works great for me but we definitely have completely different hair.😅
This is a really great video-you are really thorough w sharing your processes! I actually need ANOTHER gel option over UFD b/c it is the only gel that gives me as much moisture. Curious what is your current hands down fav combo products?
Thank you. Cured means no longer sticky/tacky. Just like when you get your nails done. There is a point when the polish is dry but not quite hardened and slightly tacky to the touch.
Have you tried using kinky curly curling custard underneath? I used UFD in past years and I couldn’t use alone. I had use other gel or custard under it, otherwise I would get minimal results.
I don't like this product, not sure why it's so overhyped on youtube. It has no hold and is very sticky with lots of humectants. Extreme learning curve and finicky, like my hair would come out different everytime I used this...I gave it up and went to Kinky Curly and never looked back.
Hello , has anyone used this product and experienced a lot of buildup on the scalp? I’m currently experiencing that after my first experience using this product.
I need help!😭 I’ve been watching botanical gel videos for hours. All of the videos I’m seeing for these awesome products seem to be aimed perfecting the wash & go. I’m in the process of trying to grow my edges back, so I was looking for gels & hair-stylers without alcohol & harsh ingredients to reduce further breakage. I don’t wear wash & go’s & am planning to wear simple updo’s, & buns through the summer. I don’t plan on wearing my strands out/open at all. I’m looking for something that I can smooth & tame the perimeter daily. This product as well as the similar Camille rose gel seem to be a hit. Can anyone point me in the right direction. TIA❤
I’m going to be frank with you, you don’t need to smooth/tame your edges. You need to just leave them alone. Besides, botanical gels typically won’t lay your edges down. If you just can’t go without laying your edges-foam and edge strips. How I Lost My Edges...Then Grew Them Back th-cam.com/video/0rohqJtNrsE/w-d-xo.html

Hi! Fellow Floridian here. You are braaave to use UFD alone. I love it, but I always use a topper to combat the humidity (even in the winter).
It’s pretty dry right now so I was able to cut up a lil. lol

Seems like the TH-camrs with thicker hair don't have the best results with UFD. UFD works for me as a one styler, but I have low density hair.

No, I haven’t. KCCC doesn’t clump my hair on its own either. Combining the two would likely be more of the same.
