When using the flame thrower you should bring the cross hair down as close to your marine as possible then it is really fast and easy to sweep the whole screen with it.

He's using an invincibility cheat. There are multiple times where this guy should have been killed. This game is extremely unforgiving with the hitbox detection - one of the worst I've ever seen. And the "roll invinciblity" only lasts from the first frame of the animation to the final frame (about 3/4 of a second) and there are - multiple explosions (too many to count) that he either didn't roll away from at all, rolled away from too late, or that he would have rolled right into and should have died. To me the most explicit example of cheating is on the final boss - watch the first and fourth laser blasts that it shoots at him. Those things are ridiculously hard to dodge and they hit the guy dead center and miraculously he doesn't die. It's been a while since I've played this on MAME, but if I recall, isn't one of the weird bugs of using the invincibility cheat that the rescued female sidekick girl shoots non existant bullets?
Good point on him using invulnerability. I remember beating this game over at Time Out around 1990-1991 on the Neo Geo game there, over at Cerritos Mall, and yes, the invulnerability frames were extremely short and it was VERY easy to die. The "Ambush" levels were often more difficult than the end level bosses. This game was IIRC, an "Easy mode" version of the Fabtek game "Cabal", which used Trackball controls. This game was far easier to play than Cabal, but oh man the hitboxes...
