true, Bouguereau does dot every "i" and cross every "t"... I suspect this comes from his exposure to photography... we might think of him as the first photorealist.
not to be a desktop critic, but I think your own work could incorporate more light, now that you're out of the dark studios of ravenswood and living in the california sun... Sorolla, Sargent, Bo Bartlett, and even Eric Fischl might be interesting examples in terms of lightening up your canvasses... sorry for the unsolicited advice. I enjoy your videos and your art very much.

Thank you for sharing your experience of this exhibition. I’m so jealous that i can’t see these works my self, to visually comprehending and appreciate the technical complexities that Bouguereau used within his masterpieces.
    Thank you for this video.

Thanks so much for your review. You are so lucky in the US as you get to see WB exhibitions. Here in England, we never get to see his work. And not a single person to whom I've mentioned his name has heard of him - the greatest and most famous French painter of the 1870s and 80s!

I'm in England ... and I absolutely love WB. Feeling very jealous that Jennifer got to see his work IRL. Mind you, I'm no art buff ... I got to know about him from one of his Mary and Jesus depictions on a Christmas card one year - I was blown away by how beautiful and precise it was.

As an artist I stick my thumb in a lot of pies, from architecture to ceramics. Right now I am making a Bouguereau copy; so exciting to explore the beauty, the technique, story telling of Bouguereau. I used to live and work in SD, close to Balboa park, on any weekday at lunch I would wonder over to the Timken gallery and imagine it as my own private gallery (not too many visitors on a rainy Tuesday!) Very sorry I missed the show. Great review!!

I saw the show at the Milwaukee Art Museum when it was here and I was like “Bouguereau definitely had a foot fetish.”

LOL! I've always thought that ever since I first got into his work ... glad I'm not the only one feeling suspicious about the amount of 'bare footage' he's created!
It could be though, like Jennifer says, because he's so darn GOOD at painting feet he just has to show off his prowess :)

So better use of sfumato and selective focus? Good point I'm surprised hasn't been brought up more. I don't think I'm going to be able to unsee it now

Thanks for you insights on the paintings. Looks like it’s a nice museum ..... of course it’s no Art Institute if Chicago 😜

Can't make that exhibit, but a few of them are on loan from the Joslyn in Omaha which I frequent. So I am fortunate to see his paintings there. Thanks for sharing your experiences and observations.

@@JenniferMariePainting I saw it in San Diego when the museum was open at night. I was struck by how big the canvases were, and the figures were large and in your face, but the real interest was in the backgrounds. The figures stopped your eye, the backgrounds allowed your mind to wander.

I love listening to your experience and talking about the style of the artist and how you give examples. It’s great! I can only dream of seeing these paintings in person so getting someone’s point of view with examples is amazing.

The best way I describe Bouguereau's collective work is "soft." Not in a derisive way or like "delicate", but "soft" like a marshmallow or clouds on a midday. It's calming to look at.

I was just about to study more of Bouguereau and your video came up. Im in Australia and we only have a couple of his paintings here in Melbourne so thanks for showing me the very glossy photos from san diego. I do the same in galleries ,firstly look quickly then pick the favourites and try to cram everything into my brain ,,,,,youre right about the lines around his figures and they look intentional , and rarely have a break in them. Most painters will have broken outlines when a dark object is against a lighter background by making a slightly lighter line between the two and conversely a darker line with a lighter object against darker background.Only here and there of course. The ambiguity over whether or not he glazes over his skin tones or scumbles might be explained by the french definition being the same word for both, therefore interpreted as either.Cant remember where I read this
