Excellent discussion..... thoughtful inclusion of the Mexican muralists Rivera, especially Sequeiros and Orozco. Not surprising White stayed on in Mexico City. ..... if I had my druthers I’d live there. Thank you for this. Miss Jenny

I let go of a Charles White at an estate sale, not sure if it was a copy, but it was his "Come Up A Little Higher." I was in line to pay for it and a woman behind me really liked it, so I gave it to her to buy. But, now I know of him and his work, I'm smitten by it.

Very helpful discussion! It certainly is a very striking image. The colors are so muddy and muted, the expression is the soldier's face is the focus of drama.

Thanks for sharing this. I have been interested in Charles White and his art since watching MoMA's short video of his retrospective. Is there a biography or book that talks about him, his art and it's impact?

He got tuberculosis because of the army. One of his jobs in the army was digging trenches in the swamps near Mississippi and got tuberculosis from that. He was disappointed that after the army many black soldiers were still discriminated against in the u.s even after risking their lives and health and so on. Maybe that can be a correction instead of saying he was lucky to be in the army cause they discovered he had tuberculosis. If it's not the truth ?
