  • Travel along the Puffing Billy Railway from Gembrook to Cockatoo in the Dandenong ranges in the East of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the 2ft 6inch gauge railway which was once the lifeline connecting this area to the rest of the state. Now a magical ride for tourists, it runs through the beautiful scenery that the ranges have to offer. Well worth the trip and easy to get to with the connecting Melbourne suburban railway at Belgrave.

    This looks like it is going to be fun. The low light through the trees make it look magical.
    Also I can't help thinking Gembrook Cockatoo sounds like the Aussie version of the Maltese Falcon. :D

    That bloke on the platform at Gembrook seemed to have a doppleganger at Fielder. 😄
    An interesting contrast just after I've been watching over 7 hours* of "driver's eye" videos from another 762mm gauge railway, namely the Alishan Forest Railway in Taiwan. Earlier this month it has been fully reopened after being severed by major typhoon damage 15 years ago.
    In just over 70km, about 50 tunnels, a triple spiral and 2 zig-zag/switchbacks, an elevation difference of over 2400m, passing from tropical to temperate climates. Mostly diesels, but they DO have Shays. I've yet to ride behind one of the latter though.
    * Not all in one sitting. 😆

      @@driver667 I've made a number of trips on the Alishan line. Did the full trip one way (up) in 2002. Both ways in 2003. Since the typhoon damage, only trips part way up the line in 2016 and 2023. Still totally worthwhile - just like most people don't travel the full length of Puffing Billy either. 😉
      That chap on the platform probably makes great videos too. I might seek out his TH-cam channel. 🤣

    Only problem was, every time it got windy or stormy the power went off.

    Question: why does there appear to be two stations at Gembrook? A couple of hundred metres out from the current station terminus there’s another platform and series of station buildings on the right (with a platform name board).

    • @driver667
      @driver667  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@xr6lad that second station is the site of the original Gembrook station. The current terminus is the operational terminal station for the railway nowadays. 👍😀
