been solo in a house for 60yrs wouldnt change it for the world. im no doubt a selfish pig, but realising early it really is one life, its my turn and im taking as much as i can get, come my last day the one thing that wont be within light years of me is regret. all the best lorna, and yes the dungery,s are mint.
Lorna, please dont apologize for weighing your options and/or concerns out loud with us. I applaud you pausing before making any big decisions. What kind of work do you do, Lorna? What I hate most about traveling is packing, so I liked that suggestion by another subscriber to utilize one of the small laundry machines from Amazon, so you can have your clothes, etc. Ready to use. Anyway, from here in Houston, Texas, I am Leigh, looking forward to getting to know you through your vlogs. I'm proud of what you are doing.
See your little "Narrow escape" as a summer house on the countryside and live walk of life in London on working days. In that way you will have a holyday escape all year round. In that way you can have a rich life with the benefits of both lives. A city life with a steady income and a canal life with all the things being good for your mental health. Love from Denmark-
To put a duvet cover on, turn it inside out. Put it over your hands like a big glove, then grip the corners of the duvet with it and shake it on. This gets it most of the way on in one go.
Thank you for that since my lovely wife died changing duvet covers has been a nightmare albeit a good workout lol so I’ll definitely be giving it a go, somebody once told me to turn it inside out but I just didn’t see how to do it as I’m only a man lol!
My sisters told me about rolling the inside out duvet cover and the duvet like a burrito and then unrolling it. Magically the duvet comes with the cover on. I’ve not managed it yet; still working on it! 🤪
@@billabongoneill I could have been the author of your comment too. Lost my wife two years ago and it’s a chore which I have found the hardest , duvet changes. 👍
Its all about the balance ⚖️ my son has a narrow boat (Tranquility, peace in the pod that David did the vlog for) and we try to use it as much as we can but being home owners and having other holidays and hobbies, you can easily fall into the boat is a chore that you have to get to, especially if its not close and not making the most of it, but after 3 yrs its started to balance itself out and we plan nice days out on the boat, feels like its working now and so worth the effort and the nice breaks we have.. happy boating 😎 Arrhur
Yes you need to give yourself more time to decide on what to do in the future. You certainly seem much happier with this new boat compared to the old one, you seemed to have a different problem every time you ventured out in it. Plan plan plan, it's the best way to decide on the future. Take care
A small space always needs cleaning. One piece out of place, or one dirty dish, or a tiny bit of trash, and the entire space seems a mess! It is a difficult task to staunch disorder! Everyone with a small place faces the same problem :)
It sounds like in the short term you should schedule at least one weekend a month to stay home and not visit the boat. Use it to do all the little home chores and generally catch up on sleep. Then after some time you'll be in a better head space to plan out what you want to do long term.
Your boat looks beautiful. I hope that you carry on loving her! I'm not sure, but it looked as though you were trying to light the gas hob with the kettle in situ. You may have more success if you light the gas first and then put the kettle (or pan, or whatever) on it. Re putting on duvet cover, do you know the trick of putting it inside out, put your arms in right down to the corners, grip duvet and pull up. This should get the cover over about two thirds of the duvet. That's the easiest way to do it.
Sounds like you're really enjoying your beautiful boat! It looks fantastic! I hope you can balance your work & boat life for you. Looking forward to your snagging vlog! Claire x
I commute every week. I used to hate the packing of my bags even more than the return journey. But slowly slowly I have organized myself to have what I need at home and at work. It takes time and yes, I have duplicates of essential things, but Its worth it to not carry anything more than my laptop, phone charger and a bag of yummy food for the weekend. As you say, give yourself time to ajust, a year seems perfect as you go through the season, to get used to this new back and forth to your boat haven. For most People of working age, work is unavoidable... But Perhaps a 4 day week is something to aim for when you are financially able. I enjoy watching your adventures and hope to see you canal side one day.
You are right in that those are good problems to have, and you recognize that and said so. That cancels any moaning that I did not hear. As a long time sleep specialist (since 1979 - 45 years?) I can tell you that swinging from day to night work is exhausting. There are ways to do it healthily, such as rotating staff in a clockwise direction (days to evenings to nights) and avoiding frequent swings back and forth is better but can be difficult. Running a sleep lab, I promise I have done my share of nights. I could have stopped when I became management and promoted supervisors but my clinical skills were excellent and I enjoyed what I did. So, there are some things you can do. Sunlight will wake you, whether it is in your eyes or shining on your arms and legs. We discovered that by studying blind individuals and they were also impacted by the sun. Long sleeves and long pants when the sun is out - even when it is cloudy. Caffeine should stop at noon. 2pm is doable if you are working from 11p-7a or close but not if you go to work at 4-5p until the very early morning hours. No screen work (phones, video games, TVs) an hour before you would like to go to sleep. Melatonin is helpful - start low and increase only as needed. I would start with 3mg 2-3 hours before you would like to go to sleep. If your blinds/window coverings are not blackout, use a sleep mask to cover your eyes. Sleep away from noise and if you cannot, get a white noise generator or run a fan or another neutral noise generator. Not sure how you could sleep away from noise in a narrow boat as they are 😂 narrow. You did not ask for a lecture and as some of my students were from the UK, I know experts are in your region and this may be something written up and on milk cartons (shrug). The first (on my screen) comment was smart suggesting that you take at least a weekend a month to get some rest and allow yourself to see more clearly what will work for you. Not that anything I might say nor thing amounts to a cup of beans OR a cup of coffee but I typed it out anyway. Great video! Love the pink checkered pants!!!
Oh Lorna! I do love you - in a Mum's way as my daughter is called Lorna, born the same year as you. You'd spend the time sharing duvet and fun patterned pyjamas! Oh - and food, of course. This video is wonderful. Thank you for your stories, fun, and adventures. 😊🎉❤
Please replace the little battery that runs the hob spark before you fill your cabin with gas and blow a hole in the cut. It's probably a single AA battery that sits in a holder near the bottom of the oven. You'll find lighting the hob a lot easier. Did you get a member of the public to film you on your bike? Always good to see Wobbly lmtd for a cheeky ice cream.
After you have the boat set up you will have a more balanced life! Possibly make a schedual for boat time and home time! Or try to do more of the home time stuff during the week so it's cought up? You got this just do a little planning and it will be good
I love the way you 'keep it real'. There's a big difference between 'moaning' and being open about the strain caused by the compromises you're having to make. I'm sure you'll work out what suits you and you'll make it work. Best wishes and thanks for another great video. 🙂
maybe you can get a man with a campervan to do a one-off bring everything from home to the boat in one go when your spending spree has abated? Working out the work/life balance is always going to be a process- maybe fewer longer days are an option for you? Whatever you decide, thank you for sharing another lovely boatlife slice with us 😄
A very honest and interesting vlog. You should be very proud for what you’ve achieved and hats off to you for all your patience with the delays in getting the boat. Well done on your PB! 😊 I really empathised with your comments about returning to the noise, all the people and the hustle and bustle. And if this is me having a moan then I’m very lucky if this is the thing I’m moaning about 😊 I totally get it Stay happy, stay true and take care 😊 You’re doing everything right and considering options. Well done you x P.s. thanks for all that you do and share in your vlogs😊
There’s just something about being on a boat that is relaxing. Our boat has been in the boat yard for three years. It’s not even in the water! Still, we love working on her on weekends. We’ll be in the water one day soon. Enjoy! 😎❤️❤️😎🥰
You know Pink is not my color but that is a very fine looking vessel ya have there Lassy. And as far as your little rant. it just sounded like you were letting folks know you are a realist about what you are doing with the homestead and your water heaven. You are doing just fine and you do look happy. That My dear lady is the important thing to consider so just keep doing what you are doing. And just have fun with it all. Take care till your next video.
Eventually, you will streamline and simplify your efforts coming and going. When you arrive in London, let some of the air out of your emotions, breathe deeply for a few minutes and bring back the serenity that you found on the boat. Keep it with you and use that energy to your advantage. Accept the contrast and take it down a notch or two. Peace be with you. Your friend in Vietnam.☮️❤️
An excellent vlog Lorna, you are being realistic not moaning !!! If I were you I would never want to leave that gorgeous little boat to go to London !! X
We have an RV and a house and struggle with similar feelings. Love being on the road but don’t see that we would want to sell the house and travel full time. So it’s a constant tug between where we want to be and what maintenance tasks get done. I imaging we’ll figure it out eventually. Good luck with the same!
What a lovely vlog. You will make the right decision for you when you are ready. And as long as that decision is working for you it will be right. If at some point down the line you need to change it or tweek it then you do just that. Jjust go with the fow.
You're right to give you time to find your balance, you have manage to find solution to every step of your life so far, you'll find a way. Maybe find a appartment to rent on the train line, at 30 mn of your job, and 1h30 of your boat, or whatever work best for you :-)
Nice video, reminded me of my own experiences on cruising boats. In particular, there's something to do every minute (it seems in your first year of ownership anyway). I noticed you didn't cast off and go anywhere (the main reason people buy a boat). But, the flip side is that just sleeping on board turns out to be magical. Your regular life no longer seems important. This is the first of your videos I've watched other than one where David from Cruising the Cut introduced his audience to you. So it's like coming into the movie in the middle -- not sure if you where your boat is, except that you're pretty far from London.
Hi Lorna, thank you for sharing your life with us. You seem a bit depressed over your current situation. Give yourself time to come up to speed on this new life. Over time, I'm sure you will work out a practical compromise. Hopefully some of the suggestions made on this video will be helpful to your particular situation. That is a really cute boat and my wife's favorite color, I hope you receive years of enjoyment from her.
I like that you are mindful about the life you want. Having watched many boaters, van lifers and living off the grid I'm always curious as to how you manage to sustain that over time if you don't hold a job or inherit a ton of money. We used to donate to a few on patreon but stopped after realizing we worked to attain a certain way of life and secure our future retirement and giving it away to people who don't want to work, for a host of reasons wasn't sensible, for us or them. You don't help people handing them $$. So how do you see yourself financially in your retirement? David thought boat living was not sustainable, some of the other boaters talk about how it's difficult chasing water, loo dump, shopping etc. I'm curious how this all plays out over a lifetime.
Lots of these people are genuine, but many of them are sitting on a lot of money and playing at being poor for views. I’m very lucky that I have a great career with a very strong pension. Hopefully that continues 🤞🏻
My wife and I have 29 1/2 avers out in country. About 10 miles from 3 towns. It is like mooring between towns on a canal. I can relate. Do what you love live your dream! Take care be safe and I'm looking forward to seeing the next video!!😮😊
Gorgeous boat, I’m sure you will work out what is the right thing to do. Any chance of mooring your boat nearer to your house? I’ve got a leisure boat too, we’ve had it 7 years, the first few years we were always there as it was a novelty. Now we only go once or twice a week and we realise that it’s like having two homes to look after, literally the more you own the more you have to do. Good luck and carry on enjoying your boat life. xxxx
Perhaps a lighter designed for lighting candles would be a good idea since you will burn out that electrical igniter if you keep letting it click like that. 😂
Did you get rid of your camper van? Would it be easier to drive that up to the boat instead of lugging everything on a train? As far as house chores, I found doing like 1-2 things before or after work vs leaving it all to the weekend is a much better and easier way to keep everything under control. It is also way less overwhelming to not have a huge "TO DO" list on the days you should be relaxing. Cheers from FL!
As you were speaking I was wondering about the possibility of you working from home, if not in your current position, in another field of employment. Enjoying your vlogs, thank you. Cheers.
You could move the boat closer to home. Love your videos and would love a boat like yours but being in my late 70's with mobility issue I doubt I could manage the locks.
it is hard making choices in life and learning to say no is one of the toughest. Saying no to friends wanting social time may get you a little time for home chores. i dont know your situation with the bins but is there a neighbor kid you can pay to take your bins out and in on the day? Most school kids are happy for some pocket money for easy duty. I agree with another poster that 3 x 12 is a great work duty if your job/union allows. I agree that a launderette would be a great addition and would solve that issue except for the 2-3x year you want to change over wardrobe for the season. dont know if you like Indian food but check out some of the stable foil pack curries.
I know exactly how you feel! I'm in a very similar situation as you, only I'm very fortunate London isn't apart of my equation 😅 - it's a very difficult situation
We all have these days that we feel like crap but you plodded along, some cosy curtains over the door and heat will stay warm is the boat just for the weekends or will you be moving onto it full time .
Why don’t you leave a set of essential clothes on the boat. Kept in a dry bag. I leave duvets and pillows wrapped in plastic in top of wardrobe, and keep a set of waterproofs, canned food and long life milk in a cupboard, so there is always something to eat when you arrive.
Well, set yourself some time to sort things in London. It's a wonderful city - I've only really been once as an American tourist, but I have friends who live there, or near. Enjoy some non-work time there, say every third weekend, so you can take care of what needs to be done, but still get out to the boat as much as possible. You said you are working the graveyard shift this week - what do you do for a living? That sounds like nursing or similar. If so, there are many third-party companies supporting that work that need knowledgeable people. That supporting work is often remote; by which I mean, you can work from anywhere you get a good internet connection. Look into your options Lorna! I'm sure you can find a solution that leaves you on the boat for as long as you want.
05:23 You will know who the stalkers are, you'll get identical playsuits from all of them 😆 Move the boat to London, sell the flat/cancel the lease (whichever it is), buy/rent a storage unit and simply live on her, it's what you are, seriously. You're not a material person, she has all the room you need, just make her your home. I'm not saying I know you better than you do but I feel I know you pretty damn well after all these years and you are happiest on a boat. You did the surveyor's course, use it. Become a mobile surveyor if you want to cruise instead of living in London. That would hurt for me, I love trains almost as much as you do but that's the extreme route, you can work your current job and live on the boat if you really want to. JMHO and I may be right off the mark but I don't think I am.
I don't know what you do for work, but could you adjust your schedule? My daughter works 3 12 hour shifts instead of 5 8 hour shifts. This works well for her as she has 3 children. I am not sure why you are having so much trouble adjusting to the boat since you lived on one before, but I am sure you will get all the little details worked out. Why not buy one of those small twin tub washers you can get on Amazon for $150 so you could do some laundry while you are there? That way you could leave some clothes there, wash them and hang them up to dry before you go. When you come back, you would have a clean wardrobe ready to go. That would get you buy until there is a laundromat available. Could you take some vacation time from work and use that time to go shopping and stock your boat with food, cleaning supplies, etc. and get it all organized so that when you come on the weekend, you are pretty much ready to go? I live in the mountains in California, so I know nothing about boats per say, but we have a lot of part time homes up here and people fall in love with the idea of living in the forest, they buy a cabin with all these expectations, only to find out that they spend most of their time while they are here cleaning up the yard, cleaning pine needles off the roof, getting rid of the rodents that took up residence in their absence, redoing the deck, cleaning the wood stove, getting the septic pumped out, etc. It takes a lot of maintenance to keep a home up here and it takes them a while to get the hang of everything. Others decide it isn't worth it and sell the cabin. I guess it depends how badly you want the break from the city that determines if you are willing to put up with the annoyances of going to the boat. I think in time, it will be a welcome haven for you and you will get going there down to a science.
@sandbridgekid4121 okay somebody has to win the lottery why not David .I would like to win the lottery as well but I never buy a ticket so I probably will never win it
Would love to meet up as i am up to Market Harborough from a week on the 20th. Boat coming out, Jet washed and Blacked. Take care and hope to see you one day. (Not on the Railway) 🙂
Yikes, whatever you do, don't jack in that job. Even part-time might not be a great move either. I would look at other options first. Love your vlogs, what was your PB time?

There’s some really good cycle routes nearby. I’m having so much fun exploring them all
Nice video, reminded me of my own experiences on cruising boats.
I’m not depressed
@@lornajaneadventures Okay, good. Sorry to seem negative, I was just concerned for you.
Good luck and carry on enjoying your boat life. xxxx
Absolutely relate, sold my boat, regretted it ever since.
Your "moaning" is quite relatable.
As you were speaking I was wondering about the possibility of you working from home, if not in your current position, in another field of employment. Enjoying your vlogs, thank you. Cheers.
another great vlog please dont burn yourself out look after yourself please
That great t-shirt gives you 1000+ XP in my books
I've had luck blowing a little puff of air at the burner while trying to light it, seems to blow the propane into the igniter and lights right up.
You should get one of the little portable washers so you can leave clothes.
You could move the boat closer to home. Love your videos and would love a boat like yours but being in my late 70's with mobility issue I doubt I could manage the locks.
Me, too!!
Bum shaped dip, extreme cudes for saving up to build your own boat, and for not smiling too much on film and relaxing ✌️
Enjoyed that Lorna Jane 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
Hell yeah! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt!
it is hard making choices in life and learning to say no is one of the toughest.
I don’t have friends 😂😂
@@lornajaneadventures ahhh I feel that.
@@lornajaneadventuresyes you do! 👋
I know exactly how you feel! I'm in a very similar situation as you, only I'm very fortunate London isn't apart of my equation 😅 - it's a very difficult situation
Good idea to give things a good run across the seasons. Big decisions to make need a lot of thought. Have a good week/s. God bless. 😀👍🌞
Floating market of Shardlow? That must have been this weekend as they had their festival this weekend.
Yes it was - and a very success event too
Money is not the awnser some is ok enougth but it dosent need to be everything your happiness is what counts
Love your videos. I’m also a parkrun wanker! 😂 congrats on the PB.
Ha, when I first moved to my dream location, I felt li,e someone had lent me their holiday home, and I was going to have to give it back lol.
We all have these days that we feel like crap but you plodded along, some cosy curtains over the door and heat will stay warm is the boat just for the weekends or will you be moving onto it full time .
Awww just live your dream wish you every happiness the oldies🤗🤗
2:30 why’s it not lighting? Do you need a handheld sparker? (TH-cam keeps changing that to sparkler 🎇) 😊
Good job this was one of you best vedios
She keeps getting more relaxed and professional isn’t she?
Yes I see a lot of David's influence.
I agree. He’s brilliant. Kind of like the Mr Miagi to her Karate Kid.
@@CruisingTheCut and super humble
Hello just thought I would mention there is a laundrette in Market Harborough
Is the gas you use heavier than air? I mean while trying to light the burner where does unburned gas go?
Yes it’s heavier. There’s a drain in the gas locker and ventilation in the boat
@@lornajaneadventures
Hmm, you could always cobble in a bilge vent fan (gas sealed of course) for the LPG which will gather to the bilge.
@@lornajaneadventures Good for you for being aware of the danger because gas has been known to gather in the bilges' causing an explosion.
I'd be interested to hear what the issue turns out to be with the weed hatch that bested both you & David.
I manage train drivers so it’s not a transferable job
@@lornajaneadventures No, that definitely isn't - sorry! But it is important to everyone.
Is working from home whilst on the boat an option? (Subject to good mobile coverage & power)
.....or are you keen to keep work & boaty stuff separate?
No. It’s not possible to do my job from home
Hi Flamingo girl, another great video. What's happening with your boat surveying? Still on the cards?
I will update when I’m able to…
05:23 You will know who the stalkers are, you'll get identical playsuits from all of them 😆
Move the boat to London, sell the flat/cancel the lease (whichever it is), buy/rent a storage unit and simply live on her, it's what you are, seriously.
The Foxglove needs some AnnaMarie, Narrowboat Experience Art hanging on the wall, and some beautiful Minimal List Canal Maps.
youre a brave girl . imo.
Hi my hubby and I watch you off and on do you think u live in your boat full time ?do you have you cat still? From Kelly in Norfolk
@@kellyheywood503 I wouldn’t want to live on her full time. I do still have my cat
Why can't you let clothes in the boat? There is no washing machine at the marina?
Parkrun
We do a fast 45 for Tracey and me at 50 myself
100 walks each heaps of volunteers too
David had a chance of a Canal Side House, with mooring wharf.
That was an ideal property to be able to Moor up on your own land . I don't think David was seriously considering buying it .
@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725 This was posted in good humor, David was only serious, if he won the lottery.
@sandbridgekid4121 okay somebody has to win the lottery why not David .I would like to win the lottery as well but I never buy a ticket so I probably will never win it
You could find a cleaner to do the house, even a few hours once a week makes a big difference
I did have a cleaner but it didn’t work out for a few reasons, but I’m thinking about it again
Would love to meet up as i am up to Market Harborough from a week on the 20th.
Boat coming out, Jet washed and Blacked.
Take care and hope to see you one day. (Not on the Railway) 🙂
what no pink bike!
Good vid.
One day at a time
you are having a long distance relationship with your boat.
Complicated life, you have.
great see vid out on channel thanks lee
Yikes, whatever you do, don't jack in that job. Even part-time might not be a great move either. I would look at other options first. Love your vlogs, what was your PB time?
Job share could be doable and much less impact on the pension. Or I could just spend half the year off sick like most the people I work with 😂😂
😂😂😂
@@lornajaneadventuresI think sick leave is meant to be taken only when you are sick😊
