    People never ever give ehr credit and I find it a shame...she is a pioneer in many ways...she created herself from scratch, as she said so herself "I am my own experiment" no one elses...I think THEN certainly it scared even iconic figures such as James Brown there....this was a woman in rock & roll music not afraid to challenge the "norms"...and look 30 years on, Madonna is still voinv strong because she never gave up on her dreams, her ambition and her motivation....a great music writer and producer in her own right, with a great ear for trends and styles and grooves and working with some insanely cool people....watching this makes me smile....merely two months before the entire world knew MADONNA :-)

    Yeah, Madonna wrote most of her first album by herself. "Lucky Star" was written by her alone and it became her first top five hit of her career. Love her so much. Such a strong young woman, she wasn't afraid to stand up to the guy (who must have been a big star then) and the godfather of soul. Plus, her intelligence is quite obvious.

    This is why Madonna is a true artist. She understood the industry and she understood music and performance. She didn't follow trends, she started trends and made sure they would become popular. Not like today where artists are all riding the tails of other people's styles.

    @annerochier206 11 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Hahah, well put. But that was exactly what Madonna was about: despite being a woman, she did not shut up like women were supposed to. She had the balls to question those male legends; to be sexual and intellectual at the same time. Those of you who did not live through the 1980s, you do not have an idea about how rebellious that was. By 1990 she was already an academically verified feminist icon.

      He still had a point though. Yes, musicians do act, to a certain extent, but look at how bad music is now? It was that love of image, and of the physical, that helped (though it's not the only reason) bring down the quality of music now.

    John Oates was from the era where it was pretty much all about the music, but the 80s brought in the music video and artists were required to stretch themselves more. But even in the 70s we had theatre rock, acts like David Bowie, Genesis, Queen, Mott the Hoople, Alice Cooper, Parliament, Rick James and Funkadelic. So it wasn't like acting and playing songs on stage was something new. But that's what creativity demands. Madonna was on the pulse. It doesn't make Hall & Oates less relevant than they were, but Madonna was the right person in the right place at the right time. You can't argue with that. What good does John Oates saying he resents that music artists have to act accomplish. It makes him look backward.

    1:49 M's is is referring to the single Everybody (82) that made her debut as a solo artist after the pre-Madonna phase (78-81).
    When it was released had no M's photo, a R&B tune & voice referred to a black artist.

    yeah, they were all in 1983, at this exact time, MTV & music videos were new. All bcoz Madonna is a massive recording artist now, people seem to forget, that she was actually part of the whole new revolution of this "new music" and videos way back in the early 80's. The discussion was about Videos taking over the radio, hense that person seying he wanted to be a musician not an actor

    Some may see her as being arrogant but I do not. I think it is hilarious she had the nerve to cut James Brown off. I understand why she did Oat's dumbass , basically, he was saying she was not a musician. Look who is laughing now. but, I see someone who was as passionate about music as everyone of them and she felt secure in her vision, no arrogance.

      @Ronald McFondle it was the song's title/theme. the performance itself. at the time in music you only had 2 female characters in Pop Music: the girl next door (carlisle) or the quirky geek (lauper) Madonna owned her sexual prowess and wasn't going to make an apology for i or downplay it. THAT'S WHY. you're welcome.

      @@TarantulaCandy Olivia Newton John is the one who started the sex theme for pop music. She already put out a famously sexually implicit dance song "Physical" in 1981. Even her music video and lyrics for it was suggestive of sexual intercourse.

      Yes but Olivia never went as far as Madonna did with Justify my love or Erotica.

But 30 years ago, a video clip could help me (for example) to understand what songs means. Thats why Madonna is soooooooo damn huge. If u dont speak english, it doesnt matter.
