Very few solo artists in rock n roll. Chuck always had a backing band. Bill Haley had his Comets, Elvis had Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, and Bill Black (and sometimes the Jordanaires), Gene Vincent had the Blue Caps, Buddy Holly had the Crickets, and so on. However, in the classic era of rock n roll, there was more emphasis on the identity of the front man (usually the singer).

You always knew/know what you are getting with AC/DC. They never tried to sneak a ballad in on you or write and play songs for a more diverse fan base and radio play. It was never wavering straight and pure high octane blistering Rock & Roll. A good example is say when someone has a radio station or is playing music in a store, restaurant or other public place. It has cringe worthy music playing song after song until a AC/DC song would come on. Another one would be Huey Lewis & The News. They just perk you up and get you going. IMO "cringe worthy" would be at least 75% of modern "sad cry in your beer" Country music, Hip Hop, Rap and Dubstep. Makes you long for the intro to The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" or The Who "Can't Explain". Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" or ZZ Top "Tush". I can't tolerate subpar bad music and poor taste.

Interesting definition of rock and roll. The name is used to describe everything from Bill Haley and his Comets, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Danny & the Juniors, through to AC/DC, Motorhead, and the Rolling Stones. There isn't a one size fits all definition. I even once heard McCartney refer to Wings as a "rock n roll band! However, I agree AC/DC are one of the greatest rock n roll bands. If you agree that "rock n roll" (rather than rock) applies to music after the golden era of the 1950s, then it includes Motorhead and Status Quo.

Is there really a difference? It started out with blues rock that basically all sounded the same.. and then to evolve into a more progressive style when bands like The Kinks, Beatles, Stones, The Who etc came along and advanced from E-A-H.
I really don`t see anything else than a genre that evolved in the 60s and became a different beast than the polished, simple songs. If the bands in the 60s didn`t experiment with the genre, rock and roll would have died off anyway, as there was very much a conservative music genre that didn`t progress much.

Malcolm and Angus, they've worked hard to learn what they're most knowledgeable of since they were kids. They use no effects pedals, their sound is strictly from what they know what works, and how far from being abusive to push it's limit!

I love AC/DC, and he's right to identify swing as the most clear stylistic distinction between what was originally called "Rock 'n' Roll" and what later came to be called "rock music", but if there's one thing I DON'T associate with AC/DC, it's swing. Seriously, which famous AC/DC songs swing? Their whole thing is straight ahead 4/4 rock. That's what people love about it.
