    Thanks for the information on the hand rake with a magnet. Going to make mine this week. Hey All, just remember it is hunting season. I went to hike to a panning site only to realize I have no orange vest or hat. I had to scrap my panning, I didn't feel like playing Bambi. There were a lot of hunters in the woods yesterday.

    Gary, I’ve got the answer for your gnat problem. It’s called Buggins. It’s natural with no deet. Try it. Seriously, they don’t like it. The buffalo gnats here in Missouri are terrible certain times of the year and this stuff keeps them away. Good luck!

    Gary used to amaze me with his knowledge but now I just chalk it up to one smart guy who does his homework. Watching your videos always gives me ideas to try at my home creek and your knowledge helps me to be a better prospector.     That old river bed looks tasty now if you can find the pay streak... do you ever map the nuggets you find ? It’s a good way to see a possible deposit line also does that channel come out the other side of the hill anywhere? Thx for sharing great information there see you on the next one👍🏻👊🏻

    Just like a magnet increases your productive time, a long sleeve shirt and a bug head net would increase your detecting efficiency by at least 100%

    Thanks for all your great videos, Gary. You might also discuss how ancient stream channels (eocene in age) occur in the sierra for hundreds of miles running east-west and in places north-south direction, but it's the tertiary stream channels that cross gold veins that carry detectable gold.

    Places like that detecting in Colorado if with a water source we would set up the highbanker found good gold.

    God damn gnats and nails! We have the midge and its a bad thing when your in one place trying to do anything. For the size of them they don't half have a bad bite and hang around in huge swarms so unless you have a net over your head you have to put up with them or get out of there😂👍 will be good to see just how much gold there is in that hillside. Great video man💛😉

    We get march flies or horse flies whatever you like to call them and some of them bite you real good. No lasting stinging but bloody annoying.

    Those nails look fairly modern. Is this material maybe being washed down from an old mine or is this part of a wash zone from a tailings pile?
    How do you ensure your safety when solo given it's bear/mountain lion country? Make a lot of noise? Pause frequently and scan your surroundings? Keep your eyes/ears open for fresh tracks/scat/noises? All of these and 20 other things?

      That area was worked in the 1850's and in the 1930's there is trash from them both. I try to keep a eye out for what's going on around me but, then again my biggest fear is dying of old age.

    I've heard that if you hit your big toe just right with a hammer you will forget all about those gnats. Any truth to that?

    For nats vitamin B12 it leaches through U'R skin. Helps keep them from bitting. 2 put U'r HAT ON backwards THEY go for shade.

    How do you ascertain uplift in the terrain that would account for the possibility of a river channel that used to run what is now the mountain side. The direction of river channel surely could have ran multiple directions depending on the uplift and erosion over the millennia.

      Anytime we have ever came across a bear here I've just made some loud noises and they took off. I do always carry a knife but in all the years weve never had a issue.

    Gary, what gold detector would you recommend for river gold hunting? I was thinking along the lines of Minelab Equinox 800 with a 6 inch coil or Garrett AT Max?

      I prefer the SDC, two reasons. It folds up and can be put in my backpack and it reads very well off the side of the loop.

      The miners in the 1800's built miles of wooden sluice boxes, over the years they rotted away or were burnt up in fires. Now the only thing that's left is the nails that held them together.
