    Hail is water Man. Did you wind up drinking some? BTW, Thanks for the realtime review. Glad you had that shelter to keep you out of it i bet. I just got back from the last trip with my floor less tarp. It kept the rain off fine until after the entire place flooded and i would up floating, or sinking, in a lake with the Mosquitos, slugs, worms and what have you. Luckily for me, it was warm and being wet wasn't a critical issue. Anyways thanks again and Happy trails!

    A hiker here in the Smokeys was dragged out of his hammock at a back country campsite a couple of weeks ago by a Black bear. All reports say that they were experienced and had done everything right as far as cooking and storing their food properly. You never know..

    Crazy Storm, great hike.
    Are you both using cuben fiber tents... did both get damage in the hail storm?
    It is good to know cuben fiber won't continue to rip and is easy to fix with gorilla tape, packing tape, and of course cuben fiber repair tape. All work well and last forever.
    Your videos are inspiring.

    Holes in the tent are well earned scars of the PCT. I don't think you will have to worry about hail to much. Even it does hail you should be around more tree cover for now on.

  • @stevemazz3121
    @stevemazz3121 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The mountain lion may have been looking for the cow or bull that was on the trail. They have an incredible sense of smell.
    I live in Washington State at the foot of the Olympic Mountains. We have many Mountain Lions (Cougars, same animal) in the hills... I have lived here since 1978 and only know of 2 attacks by mountain lions on humans. One on foot and another while mountain biking. Both lived to tell their story. Pack a good bear spray if you are worried (folks in general) gun is a waste of time unless you practice weekly.
    On these trails when most people hike there should be no problems, ENJOY!

      @stevemazz3121 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Mazzoncini FYI, only death I know of in the Olympic Mountains was a man was attacked by a mountain goat a few years ago. He was in a group of people. They say they did not provoke the animal, it was just a brute.
      I understand it had other encounters and the Rangers put it down.

    That was a crazy storm to be out camping in. How did your tent do for the rest of your hike?
    Oh...and it's not the mountain lions that you see, that you need to worry about. It's the ones that you don't see!

    Your trek is awesome. The desert is beautiful yet bountiful in lessons. LOL. I played (in my mind) "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" theme song for this and previous video. The rain/hailstorm were gifts from nature to carry you to your next oasis.

    Hey Will, do you think that hail would’ve poked through the .74 DCF of the spruce green duplex?

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cody Moldovan yes. The difference is minimal between the camo and Spruce. Remember though this was gold ball size hail. I have been in many hail storms with the .51 and had no issues. I was also completely exposed no trees to slow the hail down.

    Is that an ULA Epic that your hiking partner is carrying? It looks like it, but I can't tell for sure. How did it hold up and how did he like it?

    Black Angus Bull, is not too aggressive, but where's his herd of cows? That's called "Virga" when the rain evaporates before it reached the ground. While hiking the desert, how much water are you drinking day on a 20 mile crossing? Hail: did you consider using a tarp , or your cook pot to catch some of that hail or rain for drinking water ? Thanks again for the video.

    Hey man! Do you use trekking poles to support your shelters? I noticed in your A.T. hike you used BlackDiamond poles, but in this one you are using LEKI poles. Which ones do you like best to think work best?

    It appears that Daniel's tent was identical to your's yet was not damaged by the hail. Do you think your's was pitched tighter?

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      topshotrhit they were pitched the same but he had a massive boulder next to his tent that stopped a lot of the hail from hitting his tent. I was completely exposed.

      @topshotrhit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hail on cuben fiber makes me really nervous.

    • @anderpendragon
      @anderpendragon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thomas Shaddox They definitely don't look like they're designed with durability in mind. I'm actually glad that I could see how it holds up in a really bad storm. It REALLY sucks that his tent got trashed though. A heavy snow would render it useless as well, I suspect. That's not great considering that they cost around $700.00usd. I'v been considering just buying the fabric, ordering some pre-fab screens with the zippers sewn in, and just making a tent. I think that a double layer of cuben fiber diamond stitched, and sealed would stand up to the abuse.

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have definitely been in multiple hail storms in this tent and didn't have an issues but the hail from this storm was quarter size. But must agree it's not a true 4 season tent I have used it in snow but only about 6 inches of snow overnight while staying in it. No issues but if you were in a snow storm it would be different.

    • @mikefranks8469
      @mikefranks8469 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ander Pendragon I doubt a sil-nylon tent would hold up to quarter size hail. Since I haven't been in a hail storm, this is just an opinion on the matter.

    • @tshddx
      @tshddx 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will Wood Yeah, that looked nasty. I wouldn't want to be unexposed like that in quarter sized hail in anything less than a 4 season tent, but you're obviously not going to have a 5 pound tent on the PCT! I bet any backpacking tent is likely to have some damage from that hail. At least cuben fiber won't tear, and is easy to repair.

    • @anderpendragon
      @anderpendragon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will Wood It's still an awesome tent. Quarter size hail isn't the norm either. I guess I just like everything to be over built. mike franks Yeah, I have a 4 season double walled tent. There's not a name on it, and it's made out of a material that reminds me of silk but it's thicker, and quilted with hexagonal stitching. The problem is how heavy it is even without the poles. It was made to be able to be connected to others like it for use in arctic conditions by rescue climbers, or for base camps. Seriously impractical for hiking though.

    Wao those Zpacks tents are very expensive to have it damaged like that with hail ! I know you work for them but I was thinking in buying one, after seeing this Vlog I am nor so sure anymore, lol; but then again, I don't know of any tent that would be comfortable to carry on the hike which would resist such attack from mother nature...
