Erin, it was fun to see your unboxing and review of "Microsurgeon", almost 40 years after I programmed the game. Historically speaking, I think many game players in the early 1980's expected and enjoyed reading the instruction manual. Perhaps it was because many gamers back then grew up playing board and card games. In any case, times have changed, and many of today's game players prefer to learn while playing. Still, I was very glad to see that you referred to the manual when necessary to learn some of the controller commands for the game. All the best, Rick Levine, Designer and Programmer of "Microsurgeon"

Oh wow, thanks so much for checking out my video! You have a very good point about manuals. I’m guilty of trying to pick up and play everything before reading directions but I totally get what you’re saying. I actually miss when games came with manuals. I liked the art work and having something tangible. Thanks, Rick!

+Richard Levine - I loved Microsurgeon back in the 80s. I was always disappointed that it wasn't ported to any other systems, other than the TI99/4a. I would have loved to have it on the C64. I always kind of wished that the game had modeled the whole body though, arms, legs, etc.
In any case, you made a great game. :)

Hey! The programmer! This is a rare fortune for any game reviewer.
Just curious, do you still make games and would you consider creating an updated version of _Microsurgeon?_
Indie games are real popular these days, and you could totally sell it on Steam and for the new Nintendo Switch.

Great game.. I owned and played it “back in the day” when it came out. I enjoyed your enthusiasm and your video, Erin.
I interviewed Rick on episode 3 of my podcast (The Intellivisionaries), and we talked all about the game.
As a kid back then, I LOVED reading the manuals. It was part of the whole experience. And many of the Intellivision games were quite complex and really couldn’t be played well without reading the manual.
Let me know if you’d like to come on the podcast some time to talk about the Intellivision. It would be fun to get your perspective as someone who didn’t grow up with it but getting into it now.

Hi Mr. Levine, are you by any chance involved with the new Intellivision Amico? The launch trailer says they're remaking old games, and they happened to show Microsurgeon in the background. This was one of my favorite TI-99/4A games!

This is, in my opinion, one of the best Erin Plays you have done. It's got it all: an unboxing, a cool, weird game I'd never even heard of, the freakin' INTELLIVISION, and Erin being as awesomely adorkable as always. Keep doing what you are doing!

I used to have this game many years ago, and it was difficult. If I remember correctly, the white things flying around are white blood cells. They weren’t actually an enemy, but if you travel outside of vessels they will attack you and drain your energy. Since they help fight off infection, you should only kill the ones that attack you and leave the others that are just flying around. Killing too many of them makes the patient’s condition worse.

  • @theantithesis1

Not many Intelivision games required two controllers to my knowledge. The only one that comes to mind is Dracula, also by "eye-magic," where you can turn a person into a zombie to kill a cop. It was not a necessary part of the game like Microsurgeon.
Other games used just one controller, but the way the controllers worked, the buttons and the disc used the same signals. So, a game like Tron Deadly Discs or Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloud Mountain where the disc moved your character and the keypad shot in a direction, the disc and keys interfered with one another. You could get around this by using two controllers, using the disc on one controller and the keys on the other. This way you won't be running and then suddenly stop because you took a shot.

AD&D Treasure of Tarmin...This game was way ahead of its time. 1st person RPG dungeon craw with turn based combat. And if you die, you die! Unless you get lucky and get reincarnated (red the instructions). What they accomplished with 8bits for this 3d craw is amazing! And you only need 1 controller. FYI Microsurgeon was made for 2 players but you can play on your own.

Herb Cruz ... I am ok with the Intellivision controller (it was my first video game system) but the Coleco controller is a bit stiff and hard on the hand. You can use an Atari controller, but need you switch between the 2 controllers in most cases just to start the game.

If you decide to do more Intellivision videos, here are my recommendations...
    Quick and easy to learn/play:
    Astrosmash
    Frog Bog
    Shark! Shark!
    Burgertime
    Worm Whomper
Easy to learn but check manual first, longer play time:
    Mission X
    Dreadnaught Factor
    Hover Force
    Dracula
Long play, better read the manual:
    Treasure of Tarmin, AD&D
    Bomb Squad (requires Intellivoice)

All his recommendations are perfect. Adding to the rec list:
Easy to pick up and play:
      Lock & Chase
      Nightstalker
      Snafu
      Beauty & the Beast
      Locomotion or Happy Trails
      Dragonfire
Please note I said "easy to pick up and play" not "easy to master.". Nightstalker is straightforward and you *still* get more jump scares than a horror movie.
Harder to get the hang of, but fun. RTM.
      Atlantis
      TRON Deadly Discs
      Ice Trek
      Advanced D&D Cloudy Mountain
      Major League Baseball
      Q-Bert
Clear your afternoon, read up, and raise yourself up to the challenge (proto-Nintendo Hard):
      Utopia
      Maze-A-TRON
TRON Solar Sailor (Have a scratch pad nearby or help.)

I have been buying games lately for the Intellivision. These last few years I have picked up Go Sub, Intellivania and Lock N' Chase Revenge of Lupin. I would rather Emulate though with the Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB in the Vilros Keyboard Touchpad Hub running Berryboot Retro Pi. You can use the Raphnet SNES to USB Adapter for the SNES NTT Data Controller and have all your buttons and better controls even though the original was 16 point. You may notice on something like D&D Cloudy Mountain. Go Sub is being offered for free from the developer and Gooninuff is too I believe. I like Physical Cartridges though most. Can't wait to play Lock N' Chase Revenge of Lupin at Christmas. That one is just waiting in the tree unwrapped to torture me.😊☃️❄

3:40 I know that musty smell. I think it develops if stuff is kept in a slightly humid place for a number of years (like an attic or basement). I love that you take on these bizarre side stories of the video game industry in it's wild, experimental years! :) Those crazy kids. I can't decide if this game was way ahead of it's time or the result of a sack lunch comprised entirely of edibles...
Either way, fun vid and enjoy the stories. :)

Speech impediments like Dyspraxia can make some people say some pretty funny things sometimes! My brother has it. His wife sometimes makes fun of it or sometimes can't stop laughing at what he says sometimes - especially when he gets annoyed...just becomes even more hilarious! Poor guy!

This is a very involved game for 1982 which is awesome for the way the programmer used about every bit of ability of the system. I just started watching your videos after seeing you with Mike on cinemassacre plays. Call me a bandwagonner but love your play throughs.

@@ErinPlays I've been pondering starting to do some game reviews, old tech, music etc. But my setups not so grand. What do you use to capture gameplay? Looking forward to more of your reviews.

For the two controllers at once, you just have to practice. I lived pretty far from other kids and my sister refused to play video games, so I spent a lot of time playing two player sports games (those early Intellivision sports games were all 2 player) by myself because those were the games I had. After a couple of months of it, you adapt to it.

You have a critical patient here mam. Less talk more surgery. Time is ticking.
Jokes aside I played this alot. Stressful but fun game. Did I mentioned stressful? That status page was straight up harrowing to look at sometimes as things cascaded out of control. It was tough.

Retro Gamer did a feature on Microsurgeon a while back (Issue 163) and apparently, the designer, Richard Levine, utilised a fairly nifty graphics compression technique to get everything to work, which he claimed had never been used in a videogame before that time.
