    Never would have thought about using pipe clamps to make what is essentially a quick release twin-screw vice. Awesome 👏

    Jay, thanks so much for your truly great videos. As someone who has watched many TH-cam instructional videos I very much appreciate your descriptions, extremely careful editing, the use of stop motion, graphics projections and, especially the "twin Jays." One of my favorite ones is where you slowed down the action to drink coffee to watch paint dry! A beautiful change of pace and very humorous. You have elevated TH-cam to a very high level.

    Built one of these just today. Turned out well and super easy and quick. Err... sorta. My fault for not making sure the pipes didn’t interfere with my dog holes. Yup. Good times. Thanks Jay!

    What a contrast! This morning, I started off watching Rob Cosman's video on "The best woodworking vice" featuring a beautifully made, but $300 piece of woodworking holder-ness...vicety...clampering... Anyway, I've got a great deal of respect for Rob and what he does, but I don't do this for a profession and at 58, I probably never will. So, I really can't justify spending about $300 on a vice, as nice as it may be. Fast forward a few minutes and here I am watching your video and it is a great, economical bang for the buck. There's something for everyone in this maker community and I appreciate both ends of the spectrum. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Looks like I'm going shopping for some Cal-hawk bessey style pipe clamps.

    Hey Jay, I just wanted to say thanks for all the time you put in educating others. I got into word working about a month or two ago and thanks to you I'm already making pieces I can sell for hundreds of dollars. Thanks man, keep up the great work!

      When cabinet work slows down, I can hopefully make a few bucks correcting auto-correct. Thanks for the tip.
      By the mere fact you have not re-edited your post to correct the word, it has now become a novelty.

  • @MRrwmac

    I have seen your other ones, and the flip up/down is especially useful! Thanks for the tip at the end for the clamp type. For the viewers that are concerned about the clamp ends sticking out when not in use (possible big ouch but all the vices have similar), perhaps a temporary rectangular box that slots onto the bars and covers the exposed clamp ends, preventing bodily ouch syndrome.

      Thank you for this considerate preventative measure, but nothing short of divine intervention can keep me from haplessly bashing myself on every conceivable piece of matter in the shop. Now that it's summer my family actually gasps in horror at the massive bruises and lacerations on my limbs. I look like I've been trying to wrangle elk.

    Thank you for posting this video!!! I am in need from time to time for just such a vise on my little shop. What like about this one other than its simplicity is that I can take the front of the vise off and store it (the handles mainly) away as I have a super tiny area to work in, in my shop/shed.

  • @alanr745
    @alanr745 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Congratulations Jay, you just convinced me to build one.
    I have some 3/4" piping laying in my shop and it will work perfectly for this application.
    Btw, I couldn't agree more on 1/2" vs. 3/4" pipe clamps.
    1/2" has been all I've ever needed as well.

    Having missed your third vice build video, the takeaway for me was the idea of making the front of the vice swing away or to be removed completely. Thank you very much for that.
    On makes of pipe clamps...I had purchased the "blue" brand caused I liked the look of them, but that second quick release is one more thing to go wrong as it does not always engage as I have it set up in vice like set up. The one of two of "red" from everyones favorite discount tool supply broke with limited use. The screw pin (?) broke so handle does not stay seated in its hole and just spins (if that makes sense.) Sticking with the "orange" brand for now.
    Thanks for all good info and ideas.

  • @bityard
    @bityard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I made a pipe clamp vise modeled after yours and bought the Irwin quick-release clamps thinking they were going to look and work much better than Horrible Fright jobbies. Wrong! Like you said, the near end pops right off every bleeping time I go to pull the clamp out.

    Whoops! You cut off the end of the video there!
    Jay, you're a dude...I particularly like the part where you 'got up early' and made the vice before anyone else had arrived at the shop. This, for me, is way more important than the value of the cramp assembly. This is really 'giving'. Well done mate.
    You've also got me looking at my workbench and thinking about where I can fit such a vice.
    All the best.

    Hi Jay, I just watched this video again and I'm looking forward to finally making a couple of these. I'm 65 and brand new to woodworking and never tried this before. That looks great if you're just starting out. I don't really know what I'm doing and I don't want to drop $100+ on a proper vise, this pipe clamp vise looks like it's a minor pain to use but completely functional.

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +uzimonkey it's not a pain at all. 99% of the time you wouldn't even use the swing up feature or have to adjust the pipes. The clamp heads have enough travel for the vast majority of situations.

    Cool.
    I'll also mention a small modification for a tale vice that can be really useful.
    Drill a couple of 1jn holes (vertically) into top of the vice into which you can fit a piece of dowel.
    Then, you can use the end vice to "clamp" long boards to the top of the bench; that is, with either the board lying flat on the bench, or, if the board is not too wide, you can stand the board on its edge.
    (To be clear, I'm assuming here you have something to press the other end of the board against. E.g. pegs in "dog holes" in the bench top, or stays clamped across the bench top.)
