Latest News! As of July 31st, 2018 - News #1 = Viltrox EF-M2 ver 3.1 firmware is now out! Fixes some issues with the GH5 stabilization. trying to get more details. Also more fixes for Olympus cameras. Check the text file with the download to the latest firmware. You can view that info here: goo.gl/JYYkB3 and download the firmware here: goo.gl/6UsUdg. News #2 = As of Version 3.0 firmware Canon APS-C lenses with STM apparently are able to be used on the Viltrox with modification to the mount! Other TH-camrs have put out videos where they modified a Canon 55-250mm f3.5-f5.6 IS STM lens by hacking off the Extra ring. While i don't advise doing that as it can destroy your lens.. It apparently works now! News #3 = Have now tested using the Viltrox with Manual lenses! Yes Manual fullframe adapted lense work! They even work with other adapters that correct for infinity for those lenses that need that. No error messages on the GH5 about Lens connectivity or anything while using Viltrox with manual lenses as of firmware version 3.0 (have not tested prior versions). I'll be doing a new Anamorphic Video in the coming weeks and will showcase this setup! Your Viltrox lenses is even more versatile using Canon EF mount due to this ability!
This is really cool. Thanks for the video. How good is with telephoto lenses? Eg., 70-200 2.8 IS II; and the 300 f/4 IS ? I have the Kipon adapter which doesn't "speed boost" so it's nice to have a 600mm equivalent.. but a 420 equivalent at 2.8 would be nice too!
Thanks! Speedbooster allows more light in by 1 stop. I have not tried the telephoto lenses you mentioned.. You will have to check the compatibility list to see if those lenses are supported first however but they are worth testing! But if you do the calculation a 2.8 lens becomes a f2.0 lens (speedbooster gains one whole stop of light back to the sensor) and because the metabones speedbooster is a 0.71X crop, just times that by your focal length and times by 2 on the GH5. So your 70-200 F2.8 on the GH5 with the speedbooster essentially becomes a 100mm to 284mm f2.0 Full frame equivalent lens on the GH5 with the speedbooster. (Focal length x camera sensor crop x speedbooster crop). the 300mm f4 becomes a 426mm f2.8. Image Stabilization also reportedly still works for your lens. Hope that helps!
I'm wondering if you're experiencing any of these issues. I'm having a very strange problem with my Viltrox where it "disconnects" from my GH5 when I take a picture with autofocus on my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II and my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. What I mean by "disconnect" is that it will lose connection momentarily (like if I am twisting the lens off slightly), take the picture, and then "reconnect". Sometimes it will lose the electronic connection completely (no AF/IS) so I'd have to flip the AF/MF switch on the lens to actually enable the AF/IS (or else turn on/off the camera). Other times it reconnects fine.
Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner.. went into junk for some reason.. anyways no i have not experienced that issue. It could be that your contacts need cleaning (both camera and adapter) or that they are sticky. Make sure they retracted and move freely.. also try not to turn the adapter on too hard when screwing on to the lens. Also i attach to lens first then to camera body while the camera is off. Its possible your version may have more play when on the camera. Check for that. If so consider asking for a replacement as too much play will cause intermittent connectivity. Another thought is that the lenses you are using may be too heavy on their own without using a Lens Collar. Where are you mounting the camera to your tripod? The adapter, camera or lens itself? Try each one to see if shifting weights make any difference for those heavier lenses. Also, which firmware are you on. I'm currently running ver 2.3 (from their website) without any issues so far.
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. I just tried a panasonic GX8 + Viltrox EF-M2 + Tamron 18-400 mm. As with your 16-300 mm, it freezes the camera from time to time, especially with the bracketing function, and I have to remove the battery back and forth. My main concern is that the camera is not recognizing the lens stabilizer. I can use the camera IBIS but not that of the lens, which may be problematic at 300 to 400 mm focal length.. I was wondering if you could use the Tam 16-300 stabilizer with your GH5? Thanks, Bertrand.
Hi! Thanks for the reply.. no unfortunately i have the same problem with the 16-300mm as well. Turning off lens stabilization. Its mostly because the lens isnt on the compatibility list yet. Some times it works but most of the time i have issues.. hopefully viltrox fixes this in firmware updates at some point soon.
Keep in mind ive never owned a metabones however the examples speak for themselves.. i also use the speedbooster with photography and havent had any noticable issues.
Hi there! Not entirely understanding the question you are asking. The quick release plate and adapter will fit on most 1/4"20 tripod standard heads or gimbals that allow clearance for the quick release base lever system. Hope that answers your question if not please clarify with example and i will try to answer
I have this with the sigma 18-35 f1.8 on my G7 and have similar auto focus frustration for video, but I wonder if there is a way to tune/change settings around for auto focus stuff that could help it.
The Viltrox or Metabones do not support continuous autofocus in video mode. The closest function is quick AF in the menu however its not smooth or useful.
Hi thanks for the comment, sorry took me so long to respond.. i have not tried the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 lens. As long as that lens has an EF mount and not the EF-S mount on the end it should work however EF-S isnt designed to work natively with the Viltrox. Some have experimented by changing the mount to an EF mount or by cutting off the extra ring bit.. i dont reccommend this to anyone not confident can ruin a prrfectly good lens.. your milege may vary. Hope that helps
Hi thanks for watching! i have not tested with the Tamron 18-400. There are only a few Tamron's on the compatibility list however i will say any lens not on the list may run into issues. Check out Viltrox's website for more information
Glad you liked it! I Briefly covered these topics in the examples. IS passes through for any lens with it. Full IBIS support (minus the native lens portions) work in body.
Hi, I am able to afford the metabone Ultra and really just looking for the highest quality product no matter the cost. In this case, would you still recommend the Viltrox?
The Viltrox supports less lenses than the Metabones so if there are particular lenses you need to work that may be a factor. Quality of build is better in the Metabones as well as support however the Viltrox still provides exceptional value for its price. I definitely recommend it. check out my latest 4K Vegas and niagara floral showcase video to see the quality possible. Hope that helps your decision.
@Karr Galaxy Studios Could you please explain what you mean about not getting manual control on a Canon 50mm f:1.8? I have an old focus by wire 300mm f:2.8 which I’m hoping to use with an Olympus E-M1. I have used it on a Sony A7r with a Metabones adapter and it could only do manual focus (which still requires power).
What i meant to say in the video was not having "fine grained manual control". Focus by wire still works on this lens and you can focus albeit a pain to use. Keep in mind Viltrox does NOT support continuous autofocus at all in video mode (neither does the metabones), we are talking strictly still shots or recomposing your shot using autofocus while in video. Make sure you have latest viltrox firmware however. Hope that clarifies for you.
Karr Galaxy Studios I think so. Thanks. I understand there are no guarantees with any of these things but as time goes on and software upgrades advance, the chances improve. I will not be using mine for video.
It's not designed to work with EF-S physically however hacking your EF-S lenses can some times allow them to work. The flange distance is the same on EF and EF-S mounts to the sensor @ 44mm so no focus issues. The only barrier is the extra plastic spacer ring which can be manually and gingerly hacked off to fit the EF spec. Ive just recently done this to the EF-S 55-250mm STM IS lens and it works (not for the faint of heart however). I do have plans for a video on this exact topic. Stay tuned. Hope that helps!
Adapter normally turns but if theres too much of a gap id send it back. It will have a microscopic amount of play... Was everything else okay with the adapter? Does it move when you put lenses on it? Those will be deciding factors
The version I had was one of the first batches of the EF-M2 Speedbooster directly from Sharpest Light (the first reseller in china). I know there have been some Quality Control issues with some batches after those initial speedboosters. There is definitely no play in the mount on mine when attached although I have heard that customers do have more play than others.. Ultimately it's up to you whether you feel this play in the mount is too much or not and if so i'd suggest you return yours under warranty however It's not going to affect your image any if its such a small movement but may cause more wearing of the mount over time. If the play is on the lens side that may be more of an issue if you find that you are losing lens connection to the camera body.. It's really up to your comfort level with it the way it is. hope that helps you make your decision in returning or not?
Thank you, the game is minimal, my fear is simply that it comes off. Also by moving the connectors work. (I can change the diaphragm) This video shows the movement I have. (I have a little less.) - th-cam.com/video/oY9dQ69sv_c/w-d-xo.html I think I'll replace it. Greetings from Italy PS: If the connection gets lost, does gh5 do it in freeze?
Sorry i missed this reply! I think it went into my spam folder... anyways to answer your question yes the GH5 will lock up if the Viltrox or lens breaks the connection. I think its a good idea that you sent it back to get a replacement. Please let us know how you made out with the new one!

Does anybody tried Canon EFS 10-22mm USM with Viltrox speedbooster (with modified lens mount)?
There are units that had the infinity focus off from the factory. Good news is that there is a way to fix it. There are some videos on TH-cam on how to fix this issue. Sorry i couldnt be of more help..
Does your Tokina 11-16mm focus to infinity using the EF-M2 and at all focal lengths? I have a plain non-Speedbooster Chinese adapter from a while back that doesn`t (on my GH4)
As far as i know it does (at all focal lengths). Infinity focus is achieved by adding corrective glass. These speed boosters have corrective optics and are adjustable.
hallo, nice video. I have the gh2 panasonic and sigma 17-50 2.8(canon mount) i have a cheap adapter for my gh2 so when i shooting with sun i have problem with f stop it all burn... .also with this adapter i can t have stabilizer and autofocus. . So you think with viltrox adapter it will be ok these things?thank you.
hi there! first thanks for watching my video! I am not sure what you mean by problem with f stop and burning on the GH2? Are you shooting the sun directly ? If so, i would recommend a sun filter that protects against UV light. you could also buy a UV filter for the front of the lens to protect the sensor. An ND filter will help reduce the amount of light into the camera to prevent over exposing it. I use a variable Tiffen ND filter and it works great. I hope that helps you!
no my friend no directly to the sun! :-))) it s my fault .So ,when i have day shooting with this lens(sigma 2.8)i cant close the aperture this is my problem.also i cant have autofocus and stabilizer(these happen all the time not only day shooting) so you think with viltrox fix these things? thanks again.
No problems with mine. As far as I understand it, when that problem occurs, it is adjustable in order to get the focus back. That's why they include the wrenches. It more than likely got banged around in transit. For anyone having issues, please visit the Sharpest Light facebook website. They will assist you further and if necessary send a replacement. It is covered under an 18 month warranty from them as long as you buy from their link on ebay.
Arezzo greetings brother. I m suppose to buy EOS M50 for vlogging and since its crop sensor mod id like to know will this speed booster thing help in video making? Will it be auto focus perfectly the way the original len without the speed booster would do? Bcos everywhere there is review for pictures but non for video making??
Some how i missed this comment, just getting to it now so I appologize for the delay.. The EOS M50 is an EF-M mount not an EF-S mount like on regular Crop sensor Cameras.. Viltrox is working on a new EF to EF-M (mirrorless) version according to news lately.. should be about 3 months or so away. The EF-M2 is an autofocus capable speed booster however you are correct.. the autofocus is more useful for photographic users at the moment however It depends on what you need for autofocus though, that you can "get by" without it. Continuous autofocus has never worked well with speed boosters in general (even metabones doesn't support). On the GH5 there is one option called Quick AF in the custom wrench section which I tested in AFC mode (native AFC mode does not work with the Viltrox speedbooster). It works but isn't great for video due to the hunting that the lens does every time it focuses but it does work in a pinch. Manual focus is much preferred for smoother shots anyways on the GH5. If you have the right lens with a great manual focus control.. Moving shots would be a different story of course and i can see the need for AFC mode to work. For shot re-composition however you can switch the camera to AFS/AFF mode and tap your focus button and it will refocus quickly before recording. This may be an option for certain events you are shooting, just make sure your camera metering is set to spot or center weighted mode (Q menu) so you can pick a object to focus on before shooting.
I waited over a month to finally get mine. Unfortunately I can't focus to infinity!!! It seems the glass element is loose and the small screw just spins. I will have to say my metabones (Nikon version) seems to be built better. I will have to return mine. Hopefully I will get to use a working one in another month or so.
That's unfortunate that yours isn't of the same build quality of the one I got. Sharpest light should be able to replace it under your 18 month warranty as long as you purchased through them. let me know when you get the replacement, I'd like to hear your experiences with the process!
I watched another video on how to repair this. The guy said its actually covered in the Metabones manual. But you have to loosen a screw and grab the element and turn it until it focuses correctly. This can take some time and trial and error. But for the most part, I think its working.
I just explaned all the details you need. Loosen the one small screw and turn the element by hand. Retighten the screw, clean the element, check and repeat until its right.
Yes Richard you are correct.. Dont forget there is a speedbooster at play here involved in the calc which is a full stop of light back according documentation. Also I typically show what the cameras is displaying it thinks the Fstop is in the values as well as calculated ones. If there is an error in the video please point it out. Thanks.
Also keep in mind fstop is really only useful when adapting lenses for figuring out depth of field. Total light gathered is different and the speed booster changes that. Check out Tony Northrups video on crop factor he explains it better than i can. Hope that helps.
F1.8 on a full frame is F1.8 on M43, in the context of light gathering capability. But on M43 F1.8 has a depth of field equivalent to F3.6 on full frame. If you shoot portraits at F1.8 on full frame you might appreciate the increased dof of F3.6 unless bokeh is of prime importance.
I just bought this along with my new gh5 but it is giving me the message 'Lens attachment failed. Please make sure lens is attached correctly." Have you encountered this?
Hi! no I have not encountered that problem however make sure to update to the latest firmware, that may fix the issue! Check out Viltroxs website to download. newest Firmware 3.1 Link -> goo.gl/HHdX5U Hope that helps!
so i bought sigma 50-100 1.8 for my gh5/metabones and it freezes several times during weddings. i mounted the plate to the lens and placed onto monopod. anyone have issues like this w/ the viltrox?
There is an official list of lenses that work on Viltrox's website. I'll post a link. I will say that if the less complicated the lens is say a short focal zoom or prime will have the most chance of working if its not on the list. All lenses in manual mode will work regardless, its more about autofocus that the problem could come in. Freezing of the camera too with zoom lenses not on the compatible list. They are still testing more lenses. This speedbooster was only released in December 2017. Hope that helps you
Just got my viltrox ef-m2 yesterday. The back lens (lens closer to the sensor) a bit wobble. If i shake the adaptor, lense wobbling a bit. Is it normal? I can't test it with lens because my lens not arrived yet. Thx for sharing
The lens could be loose. have you tried tightening by turning the lens holding ring back into the housing? (gently) ? You might need a lens tool which can be bought on ebay or amazon for cheap. Try not to scratch the lenses themselves however. A lot of these lens issues are caused due to coming loose during shipping and slight Quality control issues at Viltrox. Most issues are fixed relatively easily. If yours has any further issues, contact The Sharpest light via facebook.. or whatever reseller you bought from.
Hi there! Thanks for the comment. I have not personally tried the Canon 24-70 (version 1) 2.8 on the Viltrox. I do know that the Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 USM II and the Canon EF 24-70 f4.0 IS is on the compatibilty list! It stands to reason that the original would also work as I don't think the micro code was updated much from Version 1 of that lens. Its also a flagship lens and those tend to be more compatible than others. Perhaps someone in the comments can comment on their success of this combination. I hope that helps you! Sorry i could not test this myself.
Hi Tom. Im using a manfrotto compatible clone quick release from amazon. Its a standard 200PL compatible quick release plate. The standard quick release base is built into the Manfrotto BeFree Tripod im using (I think its called a 323 RC2 quick release). You can find tons of compatible options on Amazon. Hope that Helps!
Thanks for the comment.. im not sure what you mean by enlarging the aperature.. the GH5 does this for you unless its a manual lens. the optical formula of the speedbooster means your getting 1 stop of light back. Also the Tamron 18-400mm may not be fully compatible and i dont have this lens to test.. its possible the electronically controlled aperature isnt working.. check the compatiblity list on the sharpest light's facebook page or send them a message if you have any other concerns. Also download the latest firmware for the EF-M2 it fixes a lot of issues.. hope that helps
Thanks for the question.. VLog is the default choice I have set on the camera in my 4K 10-bit 422 mode and my editing workflow. I always shoot in Log and over expose by a stop and bring it back (highlights) In this particular video example however you are correct, there is no real benefit to VLog over CineD as example in low contrast..the purpose of the examples was to show image quality of the speed booster and lens combination
If your EF lens has image stabilization and your lens is on the supported lens list for EF-M2 viltrox speedbooster, it is supposed to pass through that information, YES. I tested the Tamron 16-300 VC PZD Super zoom lens in the video and it did have VC and seemed to work with Image stabilization on however that lens is not on the compatibility list yet and did have a few issues while zooming (would freeze the camera up occasionally to where i had to take the battery completely out). Keep in mind on the GH5 you can use in body sensor IS on its own and get good results even without lens IS turned on! I hope that helps you!
Carl's Cinema I stand corrected, thanks. I remember some notable vignetting on a friend's Metabones Ultra with (I assume modded) EF-S glass, but it's indeed not always the case, especially not for video in windowed modes.
It really depends on the size of the rear Glass element on the APS-C glass you are adapting with the Speedbooster and what usable ranges you would still be able to use without vignetting. In the video I refer to using 3rd party EF-S glass that has a standard EF mount. The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is an example of this, its made for APS-C sensors (not Full frame) but has a large aperature f1.8 and its rear element is large enough, no noticable vignetting with the speedbooster!
Yes i did, that was a mistake in the video however it is Fly by wire which means not an actual manual focus ring on the 50mm. It does work just not well due to the adjustments being extreme. Its still usable however.
Hello there. I'm planning to buy this speedbooster and Sigma 18-35, but i have Lumix G7. But on Ebay link you provided there is no info about G7. Will it work? :)
Hello! I dont have a G7 to try but according to the compatible list its not on it. Ive forwarded the question to sharpest light (reseller) for confirmation. Currently supported camera bodies (as of Feb 27 2018 list) are: Panasonic GH5/GH4/GF1/G8/G85... Olympus E-M1ii/E-M5/E-M10/E-M10ii/PEN-F/E-PL3.... Not supported = Olympus E-M10mkiii & Black magic pocket cinema. camera. As soon as there is an answer ill let you know
Thanks for the question.. the Viltrox EF-M2 is a Canon EF mount to Micro Four Thirds mount Speedbooster. It won't mount to the Canon M50 due to the mount. Good news is that Viltrox is working on a speedbooster version for the Mirrorless mount ( EF to EF-M)!
It really depends on the aperture glass size of the lens and the focal length you are shooting. On the sigma 18 to 35 F1.8 no noticable vignetting as example.
EF-S is a mount, not coverage. So Sigma 18-35 is not "EF-S without extrusion", it simply is EF. Only thing common with an EF-S is coverage. EF-S is special to Canon. Also you can simply cut the extrusion of EF-S lenses and use it on Viltrox or Metabones. You can even have electronics. You'll just be having a "modified/physically damaged" lens, which shouldn't matter because EF-S lenses don't have too much of value for resale anyway.
Thanks for the comment. I was referring to the physical mount as well as the fact that EF-S has slightly different microcode in its lenses (Especially for STM motor lenses). Im not sure what you meant by saying i said coverage? Im simply saying Im not sure you could cut every single EF-S lens ring off and get the lens to work properly with the Viltrox.. but id love to be proven wrong.. also you are correct EF-S lenses tend to be cheaper but for some folks even a $200 lens is expensive these days. The 18-35 Sigma 1.8 is using an EF mount but its made for APSC sensor size hope that clarifies if I said otherwise.
Hi everyone! Latest news from Sharpest Light (distributor in china for the Viltrox EF-M2) is that there are a ton of manufacturing delays since the end of April. Main cause is due to them 2 parts one of which are electro plating. China has now begun cracking down on environmental air pollution and electro chemical plating is a bad polluter business (this is a good thing for workers and the environment longer term however) We are hopeful that Viltrox will get these issues resolved and can continue to produce this amazing product! All of this info taken from the "Sharpest Light's" (the supplier) facebook page. They are trying to find another supplier and working to get these parts so that they can fullfill the high demand they received for the Viltrox EF-M2! Just a heads up, for those still waiting for their EF-M2 on order, it may be a while before you receive one. That's the bad news... The good news is that Commlite has produced an EF-M2 equivalent (the Commlite CM-AEF-MFT Booster) and its now on the radar and soon for pre-orders! I am trying to get a hold of one from sharpest light to see if i can do a review on the differences. If i'm able to acquire one i will do a comparison review. Also! Viltrox has released version 2.3 of the EF-M2 firmware! Fixes for Olympus notes: "1. Improved the auto focus problem of Olympus E-M2" from the firmware notes. **Note: I have not tested this or received the latest Lens compatibility and am not sure if the latest firmware has any new lenses on it. I will post follow ups when i find out.** Link to firmware update (for EF-M2 only): www.viltrox.com//en/uploads/20180409/1523262824121293.zip Stay tuned!
I just used Commlite 0.71x with gx9, Tamron 18-400, the AF is even faster than Viltrox EF-M2 but the problem is the AF sound in video taking is unacceptable.... problem in the adapter or in the lens?Have U ever tried Commlite 0.71x?Do you know why it is much quiet than Viltrox EF-M2?
I've tried Commlite 0.71x aef mft booster and it is faster than Viltrox Ef M2, but it produced unacceptable noise during af when using Tamron 18-400, why why why ? what a pity!
Hi.. I've already addressed this in a previous comment, the lens is not a full manual focus ring lens, the STM 50mm 1.8 has "digital" focus ring adjustment because the focus ring is pretty bad in itself but it still works with the adapter. I said the wrong thing in the video originally Hope that helps.
you can modify the canon ef-s 17-55mm f2.8 to fit on the metabones (pretty scray mod though th-cam.com/video/A0QM6Ek7Rf4/w-d-xo.html).........probably just buy a sigma 17-50mm f2.8 instead
I don't personally recommend modding lenses except through an expert or professional services as it voids any warranty and it you screw up you destroy the lens. It is possible however.
+Karr Galaxy Studios....as shown in the video, it's simply pulling the rear cap out (also I only ever buy secondhand lenses anyway, so warranty is already void by that time). the sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS is great optically..........however it has a ridiculously short focus ring, the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is also great but it lacks image stabilization.....and the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vc also has a short focus throw that goes the wrong way (Nikon way)...........it's insane that there aren't any good aps-c f2.8 zoom lenses with Image stabilization from 3rd party manufactures for filming
The good thing about using the GH5 is that it has IBIS built in. you can use the Sigma 18-35 on it and get good results natively with this Speedbooster. I agree, I wish i could use my Canon EF-S lenses that have that extra ring part. I will most likely not modify them however as I still use them on Canon Camera for Photos. I've actually enjoyed using a lot of older FD glass with the manual Lens Turbo II (check out my other video on that) speedbooster adapter to get more zoom ranges in some cases for film making.
It is strange people keep using these adapters (Metabones, Viltrox and others) for Video and counting on continues auto focus. All the maker sites and and maker info clearly states that continues auto focus is not supported ... and people complain continues auto focus is not always reliable. The makers state very clearly, no continues auto focus. These products seem to have been made for the photographers, and not for the video users. If it works, it works ... but no reason to ever complain about it.
I agree, photography seems to be the main focus in most of these adapters however in the video i simply point out that it doesn't work and tested it myself to make sure. Viltrox has little documentation available and does not state anywhere that I could find that Continuous Autofocus (AFC mode on GH5) will work which is why i did a bit of investigation. It doesn't work. AFC mode also does not work on Metabones Speedboosters either but they are more upfront about it in the documentation. Continuous autofocus would be a "nice to have" feature for some instances while shooting with adapted glass and Vlogging as example however I believe most of us who are shooting video choose to use manual focus anyways for most shots as we have more control. I always think its better that consumers know what they are paying for rather then assuming they are getting it and don't.
Meta ones wanted $700 for a piece of glass and metal. Got it instantly for $80 on eBay, the speedbooster 0.7 for my Nikon sigmas. Saves $620...half the cost of a Blackmagic pocket 4K. Metabones will be required to reprice or die.
Hi Karr, we would like to invite you to join this special: facebook.com/sharpestlight/posts/2015724118689313 Sadly, we are not able to send you message on Facebook. And this is the only way to reach you.
@@BrianHallmond hey Brian yes the Viltrox natively supports EF mounted lenses (Canons fullframe mount). The latest Canon RF mount is not supported. Some EF-S (Canons APS-C smaller sensor) lenses will work but the mounts have to be altered to work either by replacing the mount from EF-S to EF or by physically cutting the EF-S mount to work (not recommended as you could potential damage your lens and void the warranty but it does work for some lenses) Canon has some APS-C lenses from 3rd parties that already have EF mounts that work on either fullframe or APS-C cameras like the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Art lens. All of the compatibility however is dependent on the Viltrox compatibility list. Also there are cons to using speed boosters as well such as lack of good autofocus speed and there is no support for continuous autofocus in video mode. Manual focus is king in this setup. Hope that helps
@@BrianHallmond also keep in mind this speedbooster is for a micro four thirds camera system. You are going from canon lenses to a micro four thirds system like the Panasonic GH5. it will not work for Canon camera bodies on reusing the lenses.
@@KarrGalaxyStudios Thanks heaps for the heads up mate! I've changed my focus now. Drooling over the Sony A6 ranges XD I wish I had more moneyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Latest News! As of July 31st, 2018 -
News #1 = Viltrox EF-M2 ver 3.1 firmware is now out!
I watched every review about the viltrox on TH-cam and this is my favourite one. Good job! Thanks
Thanks glad you liked it!
That's in great detail. Thank you for the additional information!
I ordered an EF-M2 to use the 11-16, 18-35, and 50 on my G85. Thanks for the video!
Casey Hardman how do u like it so far?
hi, does ti work with you camera? what about the stabilisation? it work with both, ibis and dual stabilisation?
@@KarrGalaxyStudios Thanks again, this is important to know.
Really nice work !! Would you say the quality is the same as the metabones speebooster ?
Keep in mind ive never owned a metabones however the examples speak for themselves.. i also use the speedbooster with photography and havent had any noticable issues.
Hey have your tried if that quarter inch tripod mount fit in your quick release plate screws for gimbals or tripods?
Hi there! Not entirely understanding the question you are asking. The quick release plate and adapter will fit on most 1/4"20 tripod standard heads or gimbals that allow clearance for the quick release base lever system. Hope that answers your question if not please clarify with example and i will try to answer
This video is very useful for recording video and photo. If you have a chance later, could you test a Nikon lens with Viltrox?
Sorry i dont have a nikon to test. Also the EF-M2 is a Canon to MFT adapter
No problem. Thank you for your reply.
Have you tested with EF-S 17-55 f2.8 lense? I hope it will be O.K. I'm using M50.
I am also excited to find your video especially when I found U've tested Tamron 16-300, wanna to know could it work with new Tamron 18-400 in AF....
Hi thanks for watching! i have not tested with the Tamron 18-400. There are only a few Tamron's on the compatibility list however i will say any lens not on the list may run into issues. Check out Viltrox's website for more information
What about IBIS/lens stabilization and focus peaking? Nice video btw.
Thank you very much!
So this will fit EF and EFs?
It's not designed to work with EF-S physically however hacking your EF-S lenses can some times allow them to work. The flange distance is the same on EF and EF-S mounts to the sensor @ 44mm so no focus issues. The only barrier is the extra plastic spacer ring which can be manually and gingerly hacked off to fit the EF spec. Ive just recently done this to the EF-S 55-250mm STM IS lens and it works (not for the faint of heart however). I do have plans for a video on this exact topic. Stay tuned. Hope that helps!
Is it normal for my adapter to move slightly? It happens if I take it, and I rotate it to the left and right. It is something really small.
Adapter normally turns but if theres too much of a gap id send it back. It will have a microscopic amount of play... Was everything else okay with the adapter? Does it move when you put lenses on it? Those will be deciding factors
I use it in combo with a: 18-35 Art, It moves in a microscopic manner
(I can change the diaphragm)
This video shows the movement I have. (I have a little less.) - th-cam.com/video/oY9dQ69sv_c/w-d-xo.html
I think I'll replace it.
Greetings from Italy
PS: If the connection gets lost, does gh5 do it in freeze?
Sorry i missed this reply! I think it went into my spam folder... anyways to answer your question yes the GH5 will lock up if the Viltrox or lens breaks the connection. I think its a good idea that you sent it back to get a replacement. Please let us know how you made out with the new one!
Does anybody tried Canon EFS 10-22mm USM with Viltrox speedbooster (with modified lens mount)?
Thanks for the comment.. i have not tried that particular lens however the Tokina 11-16mm works so i imagine that one would
hallo, any idea with the infinity focus?i have gh5 with viltrox and i cannot get right focus
These speed boosters have corrective optics and are adjustable.
hallo,nice video.
I have the gh2 panasonic and sigma 17-50 2.8(canon mount) i have a cheap adapter for my gh2
so when i shooting with sun i have problem with f stop it all burn... .also with this adapter i can t have stabilizer and autofocus.
I simply pull the plastic flange from my EFS Canon lenses when I use my Viltrox. Works great!
By plastic flange you mean the ring or something else?
Hi, I use ef-m2 with my Canon EF 50 f1.8 STM but have problem with infinity focus, you too?
Yup. Same issue. The element is off
No problems with mine.
Karr Galaxy Studios thnx for ur reply i appreciate it.
Great review - informative. Thank you.
But for the most part, I think its working.
can you send a link on video please?
I just explaned all the details you need. Loosen the one small screw and turn the element by hand. Retighten the screw, clean the element, check and repeat until its right.
I will try to find the one Steve Holt is talking about and paste it here
Nice stuff! Caught you on Nick Nimmin's live stream and figured we'd swing over and support the cause :)
Thank you! I hope you enjoy my content! :)
Hi, Nice vid. Can you tell me the name of the song with guitar funk style played at 7:40 on the timeline.
crop factor effects Fstop values as well as the focal length !! F1.8 on a full frame is not F1.8 on a 2x crop ! so take that into account.
Crop factor doesn't affect f-stop values, you don't get less light with a crop lens or camera, but you DO get less shallow depth of field.
Check out Viltroxs website to download. newest Firmware 3.1 Link -> goo.gl/HHdX5U
Hope that helps!
that one above shows the updates.. this link is the actual download link for the file: goo.gl/u923HC
so i bought sigma 50-100 1.8 for my gh5/metabones and it freezes several times during weddings. i mounted the plate to the lens and placed onto monopod. anyone have issues like this w/ the viltrox?
Have not tried that lens yet on the Viltrox as i dont own it yet (but would love to get one). Have you checked metabone's compatibility list?
I’m thinking about getting this to use with canons 10-18mm. Would autofocus work? Thanks!
That's an EF-S lens right? I think officially the M2 doesn't support EF-S lenses but I think the M1 does since it has no glass
I might be wrong though. I just read that somewhere
Hope that helps you
heres the link to Viltrox's list: goo.gl/mW5F1K (also in the description of the video).
Just has a look and the 10-18mm has an EF-S mount not a EF mount on it and has that extra ring bit. it won't fit the EF-M2
Great info there, mate! Cheers for the video
Any experience with canon 24-70 2.8 and viltrox?
Karr Galaxy Studios no problem! I am guessing the make 1 would work just the same as you said plus yeah it’s a pretty famous lens! Thanks
What is the quick release mount you are using in that tripod?
Thanks for the review
absolutely welcome!
I just brought one after seeing your review but I found it could not enlarge the Aperture from 3.5 to F2.5 in my Tamron 18-400?Why?
Thanks for the comment.. im not sure what you mean by enlarging the aperature.. the GH5 does this for you unless its a manual lens. the optical formula of the speedbooster means your getting 1 stop of light back. Also the Tamron 18-400mm may not be fully compatible and i dont have this lens to test.. its possible the electronically controlled aperature isnt working.. check the compatiblity list on the sharpest light's facebook page or send them a message if you have any other concerns. Also download the latest firmware for the EF-M2 it fixes a lot of issues.. hope that helps
great video very informative!!! for that im Subbed!
Out of interest why did you choose to use log in a low contrast setting? Doesn't that entirely defeat the purpose of using log?
Thanks for the question.. VLog is the default choice I have set on the camera in my 4K 10-bit 422 mode and my editing workflow. I always shoot in Log and over expose by a stop and bring it back (highlights) In this particular video example however you are correct, there is no real benefit to VLog over CineD as example in low contrast..the purpose of the examples was to show image quality of the speed booster and lens combination
@@KarrGalaxyStudios Thanks for that. I'm just getting started getting into videography and trying to wrap my head around all this =)
does the optical image stabalization on the lens work?
It wouldn't make sense to use EF-S lenses to begin with. These are made for crop sensors and would show heavy vignetting upon "speed boosting".
Well the EF-S lenses are made for APS-C sensors, this speedbooster is for mft sensors and with the reduced crop it has roughly the same as APS-C
The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is an example of this, its made for APS-C sensors (not Full frame) but has a large aperature f1.8 and its rear element is large enough, no noticable vignetting with the speedbooster!
real question is how it competes to sigma mc-11?
Never used the sigma mc-11.. Best advice I can give you is to check out my other videos for image quality comparisons. Hope that helps
Wait did you say you can't manual focus with that 50mm?
Not supported = Olympus E-M10mkiii & Black magic pocket cinema. camera. As soon as there is an answer ill let you know
Thanks. Is there maybe any other good speedboosters i could use in this price range that works well with g7? :)
Depends whether you need autofocus or can go all manual. the EF-M2 probably hasnt been tested with G7 yet.. wait for confirmation would be my advice.
And for BMPCC?
Viltrox EF-M2 doesnt work with BMPCC as per documentation. Hope that helps
Does is works in cannon m50?
Thanks for the question.. the Viltrox EF-M2 is a Canon EF mount to Micro Four Thirds mount Speedbooster. It won't mount to the Canon M50 due to the mount. Good news is that Viltrox is working on a speedbooster version for the Mirrorless mount ( EF to EF-M)!
Hi, is there any vignetting when using aps-c lenses?
It really depends on the aperture glass size of the lens and the focal length you are shooting. On the sigma 18 to 35 F1.8 no noticable vignetting as example.
thank you
EF-S is a mount, not coverage.
I will post follow ups when i find out.**
Link to firmware update (for EF-M2 only): www.viltrox.com//en/uploads/20180409/1523262824121293.zip
Stay tuned!
I Have not tried the commlite yet. have you tried using external audio and synching in post? Would this solve this problem?
I've tried Commlite 0.71x aef mft booster and it is faster than Viltrox Ef M2, but it produced unacceptable noise during af when using Tamron 18-400, why why why ? what a pity!
wow so should buy it , i will do thaks soo much!!
You are welcome!
does lens stabilization work with the adapter???
Yes!
canon EF 50 F1,8 Focus By Wire????????? Wat?
I wouldn't even trust any machine for "setting" the focus. It's too critical and it is definite that it will fail at least once and cause you issues.
def. worth it.
Meta ones wanted $700 for a piece of glass and metal. Got it instantly for $80 on eBay, the speedbooster 0.7 for my Nikon sigmas. Saves $620...half the cost of a Blackmagic pocket 4K.
Metabones will be required to reprice or die.

How so? Ive been shooting stills with no issue. Please share!
wrong calculations
Please explain which calculations are wrong? thanks.
my bad, I was thinked camera has crop factor 1.6, now I found out it is 2x, sorry :)
So these are adaptors that improve low light?
Hi Brian, yes optically they give one stop of light more! Thanks for question!
@@KarrGalaxyStudios I would like to get it just for that! But I'd have to use a different kind of lens then hey. I have a 600D with it's kit lenses.
