  • In this tech tip video, Josh will show you how to test and fix a classic Cadillac distributor with the tools and parts necessary. It's much easier to do this with the distributor out of the vehicle, but not necessary. This specific distributor is for a 1956-1962 Cadillac, but this method can be used universally for pretty much any distributor.
After testing, Josh will show you how to replace the points and condenser if they are bad, using parts from Caddy Daddy. With these steps, you’ll be able to pinpoint and fix your distributor problem, getting your vehicle back on the road safely.
The parts used in this video are available from Caddy Daddy below:

I have a 1960 is it true you need to have the car in drive when you are doing the timing on this model?

No, the car is not in gear when setting timing. The ignition timing should be set with the engine fully warmed up and at idle speed of 450 RPM. The vacuum advance line from the carburetor to the distributor should be disconnected and plugged on the carburetor side. Timing should get at to the "5" mark on single carb engines and "10" on three 2bbl engines. Due to the poor quality of modern gasoline, you may have to retard timing slightly. Hope that helps.

I did see actually some years ago that 64 did have a unique vacuum advance, my guess that the 64 did have lover vacuum in the intake than the 63 and needed more pull in the curve so it did get a own vacuum advance. Now I don't remember the right number for it but I have a new NOS that will go on my car, was really hard to find can I say. ☺
