    So at this level it's not about not playing suboptimal moves. It's about playing suboptimal moves in a way that makes your opponent make worse moves.

    • @manuelbonelli3690
      @manuelbonelli3690 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really. It depends on the situation

    • @Chronically_Bored
      @Chronically_Bored ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Probably because if both players at this level were allowed to play chess at optimal levels, the same way having a bot play a bot with no interference would inevitably make a draw (provided the bots are the same level) every high levek chess gane would just draw lmao

    • @mattc3581
      @mattc3581 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Well it certainly seems that Magnus is willing to deliberately play slightly sub-optimal lines and moves in order to get the opponent out of any prepared lines they know, relying on the fact that he is better and can then outplay them when they are both working it out over the board, even if he is then starting in a marginally worse position.
      You see other players do this when they absolutely need to win a game rather than draw, because they have more winning chances in an unusual variation. In this case they have more chance of losing as well, but minimising the chance of a draw to give themselves a little more win opportunity is still worth it. Magnus is the only one who seems to regularly use this tactic even when he doesn't specifically need to win, he is the only one good enough that going off book seems to give more extra wins than extra losses, and therefore positive overall impact.

    • @andrep4435
      @andrep4435 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Magnus seems to play off beat openings, accepting a worse early position, as it tempts his opponents into attacking in less familiar theory. Provoke your opponent to attack and then counter - only works when you are a mid game and end game genius. I really like it as it means really exciting games where both players feel they have a chance for a win.

    • @josh214haigh
      @josh214haigh ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure I remember a chess Grandmaster from way back saying that he chooses the move that makes his opponent struggle more to find a good reply because there's just so many options to examine.

      It's weird how many people hate on Gotham. My wife doesn't watch chess or care about it, but she enjoys listening to his recaps and it's something that we can share together. Moving a pawn forward isn't visibly exciting. It can change an entire game, and Gotham is the only person I've found who genuinely makes it feel like everything that happens is crucial. That energy is just insane.
      And this man is doing all of this in one take. He just sits down and demonstrates a pure love for the game

    Magnus' tournament rating was 2903, almost 150 higher than second place, which was Duda with 2761. Maybe his 2900 goal isn't THAT big of a long shot.

    • @manuelbonelli3690
      @manuelbonelli3690 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It still is because he has to win almost each of his games and can't lose and barely can draw...and we are talking about classical chess where draw is the most likely result

    • @siddhantjhaveri
      @siddhantjhaveri ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Performance ratings don't tell the whole story. The next tournament it might be in 2700s will you say he will be a 2700 soon? Also this was rapid where it's quite possible to be 2900. I believe a handful of players have crossed 2900 in blitz.

    • @kunalsingh4418
      @kunalsingh4418 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@siddhantjhaveri Magnus even reached 2981 in blitz. Basically touched 3000 almost. In fact both Rapid and Blitz are so volatile they don't really matter. A single tournament can make a player lose or gain 100 ratings, since top players play these formats so rarely.

I wish people who are not good people turn into, you know, turn into good people, turn their lives around. Life is long." - Levy Rozman Nov 2022.
    Legitimately a meaningful and good statement, with which I 100% agree!
    The necessity to judge actions and behaviours and to have boundaries personally and for a healthy society does not require hating the individual who makes the errors or even any diminution of care for them. We can (and I think very much need to) genuinely, in a solid and grounded way, see each other as ourselves, and care for, respect, and believe in each person, entirely for their own sake and not dependent at all on whether they presently, or in the past, are doing well or poorly in their life. I believe the world will absolutely only benefit from and improve based on the degree to which we incorporate this attitude. The boundaries we set and the ideals we pursue need to be what we are aiming for together, for each other's sake *because* we care for each person, as opposed to putting the primary value on how we want the world to be, and having care only for ourselves or our select few, while those people who don't comply with our vision of "good" as we want it are seen as faceless, uncared for, or hated impediments to our view of right.

    With sports everyone watches the greatest perform and we understand what we're seeing. We can know how great the heroes are because we all see it and comprehend, its plain why they are so great.
    With Magnus people can't get the real impact while having so little understanding of high level chess, not to mention being able to compare people who are all so far above one's comprehension.
    Its a great service to chess perception for us masses, and B classes, for you to explain enough so we understand something about the arena and the player's skills. Not only seeing games that aren't presented to the masses, but giving us a chance catch some of it and maybe understand some.
    To be able to see the spread between him and the other players is great, fascinating. Your explaining gives us a chance to see and marvel at things we would otherwise not have a clue about. Like how much of a marvel is Magnus? Far beyond just being told some guy from Norway is better than other chess players.
    An experience really and one I couldn't get, certainly as powerfully, without such help.
    Thank you.

    I am not that deep into the chess scene, can someone tell me why Hikaru was never a champion candidate when he is supposed to be the only man who can stand upto Magnus?

    • @siddhantjhaveri
      @siddhantjhaveri ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because that is classical chess. Hikaru is a monster in blitz rapid and speed chess formats. Don't get me wrong though, he's still #6 in the world in classical and a former #2.

    • @JosephGab
      @JosephGab ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting his opponent in time pressure is Hikaru one of his strength which he can't really do in classical but still his calculation speed is insane
