  • I swear, this Spyro the dragon music continues to surprise me and frankly blow me away - it makes me so excited to listen to true blue classical music in my video games. This example with the well of souls is no different. There's a lot to love here.

Between the 'legend of' trillogy's gameplay being nothing like the original spyro, the character redesign, 'edgy' plot and generally being made on a tight budget (eternal night in particular is a very short game that largely reuses assets from the first- the standout feature is really the music and emotion), many people refused to even give legend of spyro a chance. They were my favourite games growing up, so I was honestly shocked when upon trying to reccomend it (specifically the third entry) to a friend they scoffed and told me it was a 'shit game.' Around that time people just wanted to play COD MW2 honestly, a spyro game that diverged from the series status quo had no chance outside of a cult following. Like everyone here keeps saying though, hoping for a remake one day- audiences today I think would appreciate the series more.

It’s so fascinating how much weight these pieces of music have and I’m so thankful for you to continue to review and analyze them! I know you said they don’t get a lot of views and I agree it’s a great shame that other people are depriving themselves from a very rich musically experience. But I thank you nonetheless for being the middle man in getting me to listen to this piece of music and also have further insight in what makes it special. Thank you so much dood!

There was so many passionate people working on these games, but due to publisher greed, extremely stringent budgets, and basically no time (The Legend of Spyro: Eternal Night only had 10 months of development time!!!), only a fraction of that passion got to be on display in the finished games. I wholeheartedly believe that, had the studios gotten more time to actually achieve something closer to their vision for this trilogy, it would have become a known classic. As of now, a lot of people seem to scoff at them, and yes, it's a damn shame. I always appreciated the musical choices for these games, and it makes me so happy to see them analysed here! ❤

Legends is in an odd spot for me. Gameplay wise I find them inferior to the original triliogy (there are some good levels ofc, but on the whole the first 3/reignited are way more fun).
But from a story and music point of view Legends is much better. And I'd even go as far as saying Cynder is my favourite Spyro character from any of the games.

That last "gere curam mei finis" was so freaking powerful to me. Gives me goosebumps every time.
Im so glad you enjoyed this one as mucb as I did. And once you read the lyrics you get a sense of whats going in in Spyro's head. In the last or second to last song that I am going to request from this video game trilogy I think reveals more about why he feels this way about these dark powers and why it wasn't that quintessential hero kind of music. Also I love the edits and the work put into this video, the "TENSION" was very funny. And I saw you getting into that accelerating march at the end hahaha. Which to me was like that reslove to fighting and the acceptance of the possibility of death as a result of ending the fight.

"The Eternal Night" sure is the interesting one in this trilogy... I personally feel like it had many strong and kinda like... Well, pieces of music that fit the darkness that the eternal night is trying to bring upon? "A New Beginning", the first game, was mix of some more energetic and sort of heroic pieces? It was about Spyro's awakening to his destiny, after all. "The Eternal Night" takes his destiny to another level and we learn that as a purple dragon he's got more heavier duty than we expected in the first game. It all culminates in this fight against Gaul (who was a damn difficult boss, ngl). Very intimidating track, but it fits the atmosphere of the fight and the arena. I agree that often boss fights are associated with some fast pieces of music, but whoever at Krome Studios decided that "nah, we need some slower stuff", they deserve a medal.
Like you said in the video, it's a big shame that the Legend of Spyro trilogy isn't popular... I kinda get some of those people who don't like the games, I initially was also weirded out by Spyro's looks, but came to like his goofy looks through time. But the story and the music totally caught me right from the first moment when I played "A New Beginning", and the button smashing isn't too bad when you get used to it and take into consideration that there are honestly even worse games. "The Eternal Night" was in very unfortunate situation and victim of what was unfortunately common back in 2003-2008-ish where publishers forced studios to push out sequels in a very short time window, so many of the popular games at the time got sequels that had had development time of barely a year. Krome Studios, who was behind the first two games of this Spyro trilogy, was at the peak of their studio's history during those years, but it's apparent that many of their games suffered from the publishers' greedy wishes and "The Eternal Night" didn't get enough time to get proper balance testing, which is why it's awfully difficult compared to "A New Beginning". It had so much potential, but ended up lacking especially in combat. But the new lore and other aspects of the game are wonderful. At times I wish Krome could have been able to make the third game "Dawn of the Dragon" too, but the studio that took over the series did great job too. But it's apparent that as a small studio with very small budget, they couldn't really meet the publisher's expectations, which seemed to be the cause of death of the Legend of Spyro series... Where "The Eternal Night" left the story at, I feel like it could have been able to lead to two more games, but we got only one, which was "Dawn of the Dragon". It kinda forced to give the series an ending, as the publisher clearly wanted to try something else to make Spyro relevant again (but they failed at it once again). I wish there could be remasters of these three games, with some slight difficulty balancing made to "The Eternal Night". The other two games are honestly fine as they are, they aren't too difficult.

Another great video Marco!! Man this takes me back. the Spyro legend trilogy truly was a gem in the rough and it was quite a shame a lot of older fans ostracized the game for being more tonally serious and an RPG instead of a simpler platformer. Hopefully with Microsoft's purchase of ABK they may one day decide to revisit the legend project and bring it back for a newer generation as well as the older ones now that they've have more time to mature. One thing though is if it isn't a straight port however, it would be very unfortunate but a likely situation there'll be a lot of recastings for characters such as Spyro himself (originally Elijah Wood in the trilogy) Ignitus (Gary Oldman), Malefor (Mark Hamill), and more as re-licensing some of them would likely cost a pretty penny now when these would otherwise be a smaller project.

I loved your takes on these musical pieces, so I’m gonna provide some quick character context.
Gaul, the final boss of Eternal Night, is the General for the overall antagonist of the series, the Dark Master. Gaul is king of the apes, was the person who lead the raid on Spyro’s egg nursery in an attempt to kill him, and also where he stole Cinder’s egg. By all accounts, Gaul played a huge part in why Spyro grew up without knowing his heritage, and why Cinder got abused and turned into a corrupt servant of the Dark Master.
The lyrics in “Well of Souls” sound like descriptions of Gaul in a way, that his war with Dragons has not gone good for him or his people, and his damaged and unhealthy appearance supports this, but he keeps trudging on anyways.
Your thoughts on “Black Powers” also sounds correct. It’s clear that when Spyro takes in some darker power, he’s gotten a serious buff, but he isn’t himself. He hesitates to kill Gaul but ultimately can’t help himself. He turns Gaul to stone and then scatters him to bits. When Cinder tries to help Spyro calm down, he’s genuinely struggling to, like this isn’t something he can just turn off.

When you first enter well of souls it starts in a room of a statue room which shows malefors statue and then you get out of that and into the boss battle with gaul. For the next part for black powers is after you fall into an area with gaul and fell into the beam of malefors spirit so to say and gained the power of the darkness. Thus black powers. This game is where dark spyro came from. Yes it does something to him. It makes his personality different and makes him have different powers. In the end of the game he was going to ascend the beam and cynder stopped him from becoming the same thing she was. An evil dragon.
