Seconding those two, you definitely want to play Blind Forest before Will of the Wisps. Not only does it show the backstories of the various characters, it's a great game in its own right, with a great soundtrack and possibly the happiest prologue cutscene music ever in Naru Embracing the Light.

Mora the Spider is unironically my favorite boss in the whole game. Despite the creepiness and fear you feel from Moldwood Depths, and her cutscene especially, the fight itself is freaking epic as hell, and I applaud the devs for making a fight for what is literally a giant angry spider so damn good. I loved this fight so much, I actually tried my best to speed run to see just how quickly I could beat her. I'm currently sitting at just under a minute. lol

The best part about this is how *well* it reflects the way the fight is played. The first half of the fight is brutal, cramped, very little room for error, and the second phase when that music turns, suddenly a bunch of elements fall in to place that lets you actually move and breathe for the first time. The first half you are fighting for your life. The second half? You are dancing.

Yesss, Ori games! ❤️ Literally on my top fave games of all times. You also chose my favorite boss and boss theme from this game, Mora is FERAL, Dark Souls AF and her theme shows that so well with all the "horror music" elements in it!
I'd like to point out that there on 05:47 - the choir isnt just vocalizing, they are actually chanting her name, "MO-RA! MO-RA!", which I find so fascinating. Another important boss theme in the game also has that same name-chanting quality, in a different style but very fitting to the character.
That shift of emotions, from "horror and desperation" to the heroic leitmotif of Ori's always gives me chills and makes me feel that same determination Ori is feeling in this very difficult battle. Gareth Coker did an amazing job on the first game's ost, and he just brought it to a whole other level on the second ❤️ great reaction, and I can't wait to see you play Ori, and react to more of its music in the future!

Gareth coker's scores for the ori games are absolute masterworks. The games themselves are incredible. Visuals are gorgeous, mechanics are fluid and well done, story is solid, but without the music they would still be mediocre. Two of my favorite games ever made and damn can I not wait to see what moon is working on now.
As with the first game, the music relies heavily on taking a handful of main ideas and restating or twisting them to change contexts. Very simple and very effective.
Also I'm happy to hear you're doing a playthrough of ori. Very much looking forward to it.

I'm commenting before finishing so slap me if this gets stated later:
Gareth Coker, the composer for the Ori games, has stated that this was the first boss fight theme he composed for the game. He's done chase sequences in the first game, there's 3 different ones. Will of the Wisps has full on boss fights, which was the major difference between games!

Every boss in the game has that little mechanic to the music, where the song takes a twist of Ori's theme. It always kicks in near the end of the fight, where all the environmental obstacles are gone. It's just you vs the enemy in front of you, one on one. The insurmountable odds aren't there anymore. You CAN beat this.

This track definitely captures the sense of a giant spider- a giant, as noted by the low notes and deep percussion, but also a spindly, spooky creepy crawly, and also a crazy and slightly clumsy one too. And if you play the game, that's exactly what you get. Mora makes Shelob look like a chihuahua, but her attacks seem wild and uncoordinated like she's not in her right mind, a blind fury (she is, as it turns out: when you finally defeat her, she returns to her original non-aggressive state.). Her wild movements can make it difficult to figure out what she's doing and to evade accordingly, but it makes it easy to spot an incoming attack if you keep your cool and your distance.

0:42 osts imo are meant to be complementary in a movie or a video scene and can stand out more during an action sequence or gaming fight/moment but I think gaming osts stand out more, as there are environment themes and boss themes and cutscene themes etc. which is why I listen to video game osts more often than movies or tv series osts except for a few exceptions like some memorable intro osts. And intro osts for video games can be really memorable too.

5:43 something i noticed when i have a sore throat is, if i talk to much the first day i have a sore throat, it'll make my voice deeper for the rest of the day. it's even funnier when you find out I'm a girl. i remember one time this happened when my cousins were visiting for like half the day, and by the end of the day, the youngest cousin of the 3 of them said my voice sounded like a teenage boy. that's how you know i was using my voice too much that day. LOL

  • @Farathriel
    @Farathriel ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh dear. Your voice in the morning! It's so raspy, there's something baritone-ish about it.
Anyway, back to the music. There's something cartoonish about this soundtrack, yet it still retains something creepy, grotesque and unnerving that lurks around the corner, only to jump on you at the least expected moment. Another thing is that the composer decided to keep Ori's leitmotif interwoven into this horror-like track. While it stays within the bounds of dark themes, it portraits - just as you have said - some form of heroism.
Personally, I'm not a great fan of horror music, given that it overlaps with scarejumps which I honestly thoroughly dislike. But there's Bloodborne, which does a wonderful job when it comes to music. There's also Enderal, which isn't a horror game per se but it touches the idea of metaphysical horror that doesn't necessarily makes you jump in fear. What it does instead, is that it forces you to feel this sort of existential tension. You know there's something wrong with that world and you're unsure what exactly. "Fleischlos" is probably one of the best examples of Enderal's approach to this aforementioned tension.

When you said "and now we move into the main theme of the game... or maybe not" you were kinda right both ways. While it was definitely still Mora's theme, it, like many of the pieces of the Ori soundtrack, uses the same chord progression as the main theme.

Another reaction idea: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, All Mythic Paths.
In Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you play as a mortal who gradually ascends to demi-godhood but you can choose which form that takes. Demon, angel, lich, azata, aeon, trickster, etc. Each song really conveys what each path is all about, who your character is becoming and what this means for the world at large. Rarely do I understand the intent in music as I did in that game. (Azata man here!)

I loved the Blind Forest because of how dynamic its story was. How we discoverd more aspects about the world as we progress, and most important how Light and Dark do not represent Good and Evil. The choice and actions matter. The Kuro plottwist is done so goddamn well as well as the resolution to that story.
The Will of the Wisps ending for me was like a slap to the face. Not only Shriek doesn't get any decent characterisation apart from being evil, but also we are forced into a decision that takes from us all that we've been building (our friends, relationships and normal life of Ori itself). I felt like I was robbed, that I was stripped off any choice. What was the lesson there? That you have no right to free will and your fate is sealed? Decided by some cosmic power for you? @@newsheo5822 I think the lesson they tried to convey was letting go of your past or having to change to make things better, even if it hurts at first. Im also no fan of prophecies, but there are many stories out there that have one and I didnt really mind that one. It has to be said that not everything is undone: Ori can still communicate in some way with the others and they all seem happy in the end. About Shriek, I think they didnt want to be Shriek like Kuro and yes, Kuro got more attention with her backstory and all, but for Shriek it as shown why she turned out to be evil in a specific cutscene, which is relatable in my opinion. About her not beeing redeemed, not everyone can be redeemed or has the chance to be redeemed. Shriek was scared of the light as she was born in darkness, so she wanted to protect herself from it and didnt embrace any chance at redemption.

@@newsheo5822 I get what you mean, and I agree that Shriek could have had some more screen time and characterization. On the other hand, if I could offer maybe a perspective, how I see the story and ending - I think Shriek and Ku are a strong parallel of what compassion can do to someone. Ku would probably have been ostracized too for being disabled/different, and we can extend that to Kuro as well. she was the one who caused all the pain and trouble to the forest to begin with, but she chooses compassion and compassion is returned to her, through her child. Shriek never had that chance, people never once show compassion to her, and she "chooses darkness" because that's what she is used to, and what everyone expected from her all her life. As hard and tough as it is, I think the thought of "Ku is what Shriek would have been, if given the chance" is also powerful af. We could draw a lot of real life parallels, but that's for another time.
About the ending on Ori, I think people misunderstand it a lot, like Ori died or "was lost". *Ori is the child of the Spirit Tree* - they are *a seed*. Nothing was lost. Ori just grew up into adulthood, according to their own species (?). One could say they are sad to do it, but the whole thing, the whole game, is a huge allegory for growing up, taking responsibility, finding one's true path, and that's not an easy choice. Growing up is sad cause we have to let go of parts of us, in order to other new things to grow. That's what's happened to Ori, too.
The Ori stories are also about legacy and what we leave for our loved ones - all the spirits whose energy we absorbed on the first game, including Naru's childhood friends (Sol and Eki), they all live through Ori and all of them helped them save Nibel cause they are only a child and alone they can't do much. I like to think all of it was a preparation for Ori to become the savior of Niwen. Their legacy, and Ori's adoptive family legacy, brought them to that pivotal moment. Was it happy or easy for Ori? Absolutely not. But that's growing up.
I understand you have hard feelings, but I hope another perspective helps making it a bit better to you!

The segment of the game this piece is tied to is both my favorite and least favorite because the artistic touches are one of a kind and the immersion is so complete... but my god is it the last place I want to be. But hearing just this little bit has made it clear it's time for another run through of the game lol.
