I agree Jason. I am just a little older than you but metal and rock was kind of all the same. We listened to everything and it was pretty cool. Now things are really chopped up. I dot see the integration of styles as much as I did growing up. Back in the day I would listen to WASP and Duran Duran. I miss those days. Lol. Anywho, thanks for another cool guitar lesson.
Jason, 1st thing…thank you for your time. I wish I could express how much you’ve helped my playing and life. 2nd thank you for letting us tear your riffs up. I love it
When are the things that makes me feel good to be subscribed to your channel is I consider you to be a big channel but you are still humble enough to reply when somebody comments. Like usual, you’ve make a really good video today and I’m sorry about being late to get here but me and my wife are dealing with somebody trying to steal her catalytic converter right now.
Yeah another great lesson Jason. Ah the 80's, played in a glam rock band satin shirt and pants, platform boots.Ouch! It was a hoot though. Seen a vid of Madonna doing holiday live. Hubba hubba. But dont tell anyone.lol. Cheers
I know what I'm working on this weekend! Bwahahaha! 80s blend? How about EVH doing the solo in Michael Jackson's Beat It. And I was a closet Prince fan, almost lost my metal card on that one until I pointed out his amazing talent on guitar. Great vid, Stallworth!
I can't believe you only have 42k subs. You deserve to have at least half a mill or more. You teach well you have talent and write good music. You live the rock n roll life style by recording and playing live too. There's lots of garbage channels out there for music and they get tons of subs, man this system is rigged lol. Nice video I have been watching your channel for awhile now. I always get inspired as a song writer myself. I have my own channel too but it's just for listening purposes.
I discovered your youtube channel today. I watched several videos and I understood a lot of things. your work is very inspiring to me. thank you from France
One thing I have done to help me with guitar is experience with different genres like you mentioned. I absolutely love rock and metal. A lot of people hate on nickelback but there are riffs in their songs that will help with rhythm. For example far away by nickelback has very rare chords that will help with finger stretching and techniques. Another band that people either loves or hate is five finger death punch they have nice scales in different tuning to practice from. To get to my point is I will admit I listen to country as well. Chris Stapleton on Tennessee Whiskey has some nice smooth sliding and harmonics to use. Whiskey lullaby is all used on one scale with different techniques. I however branch away from scales or sometimes combine 2 different ones to make one. It definitely does help to listen to different genres to help out with guitar. Say if I only wanted to play rock/metal (which I do) and only focus on a certain genre say for example thrash metal. I only learn those which is super great but however i will run out of ideas and be lost again. I say listen to every genre everyone will find at least a song or 2 they like out of them and expand on. Put that genre on the style of music you like to play and you will get something that you will love and enjoy but sometimes it will be something you hate. All about trial and error. Definitely well said about genres at the end we all love music and its nice to experiment different types every once in awhile.
yeah man, dig this! Just the thing to help me break out of the old standby riffs I get stuck in. As for the role of the guitar in 80's rock/metal vs today, I think the pace of music evolution has sped up to such an extent that it's really hard to be a jack of all trades, so then you specialize and end up going deep into a sub sub genre... I hate to say it but the 80s were simpler times..
Hi Jason. Thanks for sharing these awesome techniques. I really wanted to know how to tap notes ( I love Eruption and Van Halen in general). I totally agree that the 80's was an fantastic time for music and film. Bands were not afraid to experiment and it was a generally feel good positive time.
lovely lessons dude....most lessons about soloing is always shredding , these tips are just the cool stuff no-one else gives attention too....i love it
Dude, yeah, I've noticed that, too! Don't get me wrong, I do love some shred but I think we can agree that it's often overdone! And I'll take melodies over constant shred any day!
I’ve been watching your videos for a while but forgot to subscribe, finally did. Love your vids man. Ps that guitar is sick af what type of guitar is it?
dude I hope this doesn't come off wrong because its meant as a compliment. When I first saw you I thought "great another meat head powerlifter that can probably barely play." You fricking rip man! . The time you spend lifting weights certainly didn't affect your time put into playing guitar. Nice stuff
I doubt you dont know what you doing but it may helps: 10:15- pretty much you play the D major scale, but land on the 2nd note of the scale wich is an E. This part actualy can sound good under the D major chord ... OR if you play it over E when the chord progression suggests dorian mode (Eminor - power chords does not care about major and minor anyway).
Great stuff and thank you for sharing this. I sort of learned all of this backwards. I learned to play by ear (of course, I learned the basic chords and a few scales when I started). And I never really thought of any scales beyond the basics...I just played what I was hearing in my head. But yes, it does help to tie it back to theory.
most Pop and Rock songs from the '80s and early '90s had killer studio session guitarists like Dann Huff, Steve Lukather, Michael Landau, Michael Thompson or Tim Pierce behind the actual artists. No wonder a lot of it sounded similar.
Hey Jason, great video thanx! Hey I'm running the Mesa mini rectifier with 2x12 cab and can't find that awesome thick tone you have...mind sharing your secret settings, pedals? Thank agine
I've never played through the mini rectifier (would love to someday). I believe I was playing through Positive Grid BIAS FX plugin here. But I also use my EVH quite a bit. I have a complete tone guide here and is everything I do with both amp and amp sims: www.jasonstallworth.com/metal-tones-virtual-and-real-amp-settings/
Hey Jason .Great video. Thanks for this. I love this crazy sound of the single notes. But I am not sure what I do wrong that it doesn't Sound like you play it. Maybe it is also a preset in the amp?
It could be the amp as sometimes different amps (or amp sims) can have a lot to do with the overall sound and vibe even when the same notes are played. I have a free practice guide here and on Day 2 I send you a tone guide: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
@@jasonstallworth especially at the end of your riffs, the last tone that rings sounds so epic. But not if I try that. Is that a finger technic, an amp setting, or both
@@benjaminlecter that’s probably more technique and just the way that I play. One of the things that I encourage folks to do is focus on developing their own sound and style and as you do that, you’ll notice these little nuances and that come out when you play.
Awesome to hear that. I recommend practicing your leads without delay. Delay can cover up mistakes and that can be deceiving. As far as using delay, I don't do anything complex but I may put something out there soon.
@@jasonstallworth nice. I'll have to try and try one out. Love that 80s rock/ metal sound. Not sure how I like thicker necks though. Lol. My Les Paul has the 60s slimmer neck
Rock and metal have a lot of grey areas where they cross over each other, and also it is thought of culturally different in different countries. For instance AC/DC in Britain is thought of as a metal band, but I know in America they call it rock n roll. However Rock n Roll to us is your Buddy Holly and all that kind of stuff. When I use my whammy bar I find the note dies too quickly. I have a floyd rose so maybe I need compression. That fast alternate picking on the E string never sounds good for me. I can make it sound ok on any string, but the E string LOL.
Dude, that's such a great point about the culture differences! The whammy may be your pickups aren't as hot. Or it could be the amp or amp sim you're using, especially if you have a noise gate. I'd bump up the saturation a little and make sure the noise gate isn't 'turning off' the notes too soon.
For me the hardest part of playing lead is playing anything that goes with the song. If I'm just noodling I can do ok, but can not for the life of me noodle to a riff, melody, or chorus.
I'll say the cool thing about records back then is you'd spend hours listening to the entire record! These days I think a lot of folks skip around more. I guess that makes sense as there's so much more to choose from today.
