2020 Infiniti QX50 | MotorWeek Road Test

  • It’s not very often that a truly new engine technology comes along. But, when the Infiniti QX50 arrived last year, it brought along the world’s first variable compression ratio engine along with it. But apparently that and other additions were not enough. Now Infiniti has even more changes to further boost its appeal.

Why is everyone complaining about the CVT? We got 189k miles on our 2012 altima coupe and have had 0 issues with motor and transmission. Have yall owned cvt's before? Dont sound like it.

Man a Nissan CVT? Coupled to some advanced unproven new variable compression engine? That’s a hard pass from me.

Nissan CVT. Sounds like a ticking time bomb. If my wife bought this car I would have an over under bet on whether the engine blows up for the transmission goes out first.

    I own the 2019 QX50:
    Cons:
•After 30K miles the engine begins to run very loud and sounds like it’s growling every time you touch the gas.
•The technology is very old and android like. However they finally added Apple car play which is a +.
•Multiple recall issues, thankfully the warranty still covers it.
    Pros:
•The back of the exterior is beautiful.
•A ton of amenities and features for comfort of passengers.
•Responds quickly to any driving inputs.
•Performs well in all weather, including snow.
•Fuel is ok. With current gas prices ($3.00) takes about $60 or so to fill up with the premium gas requirement.

So, for $38,000 for a base, you have to deal with a computer constantly moving the timing chain, which will snap every 20-40k miles due to the added stress, a CVT which will give out long before you reach 50k, and an interior so drab and uninspired that a scion tc looks like a better purchase. Or, you can get a 4wd nissan frontier pro4x, for $4,000 less. I know where my money is going.

As is the case with the Q60, this is a beautiful design let down by the details demanded in the luxury class. I really will never understand why Nissan has such an extreme penchant for CVTs! They DO NOT belong in a vehicle with luxury ambitions. Audi had to learn this the hard way, and did they ever.
I could even forgive most aspects of the ok(ish) interior, given that it is unique to Infiniti and the design is modern, save for the unnecessary dual-screens(Ram and Tesla clearly show how cleanly two screens integrate into one). All of that said, Acura just nails it with the RDX, especially the A-Spec, whereas Infiniti still seems to be suffer an extreme identity crisis: Is it a premium Nissan or a luxury pretender?

Autoline Network reports that Infiniti brand is going away, and will be nothing more than a nameplate on loaded-up Nissans.

Ben Lisi no doubt lease prices are low, can’t move them, according to local salesman at Infiniti. Nissan Murano Platinum...better value, V6, same CVT (not a fav and has issues), equal luxury, save 10k. My point is the Koreans are now passing many competitors with high quality safe vehicles with better warranty and priced to move. Infiniti used to have a jump on the tech, now they have fallen behind along with Lexus. Infiniti best be luxurious for the price premium. Lease better than buy, that would be a huge loss of cash. Once warranty is up, those CVT’s and variable compression engines could be a potential nightmare...like in the reviewed QX50.
