    I am 39 (40 in a few days time) and I have been addicted to alcohol since I was 18 years old. I have gone up and down a lot in that time. I am now 3 days into being sober after a horrific mental incident and feel like crap BUT I know what I need to do and your videos just help my mind settle down and focus. Keep up the good work mate and thank you.

    Wow.... you don't know how much you helped me with your statement "when you change your habits, you may feel alone". This is exactly how I feel right know. Since I no longer accept everything from other people, they break away. This feels so good and so bad at the same time, but I am confident that the right people will come now.

    Caoilté, I really appreciate you for making this video. Not feeling good enough is a common thread throughout my life too, and you nailed describing what that feels like. In the end of the day, not being in touch with who I am as a person is the most painful thing I've experienced. I'd be caught up in thrill-seeking and dopamine chasing, because facing reality and rejection was too overwhelming. When I was finally able to put myself first, a lot of grief came with that. All the lost time, the shame and friends falling away. I'm glad there are people like you making video's like these. We need more role models showing men there is a better way than toxic masculinity. I'm personally still struggling, but improving daily. Funnily enough it wasn't the belief that I'm better than people that helped me at the start of my journey. It was the belief that every single person is just as broken as I am, and just figuring it out in their own way. Thank you for sharing.

    Trying to stay sober now i feel that I’m going thru some sort of awakening but I can’t put my finger on it just yet. But I get what u said about music can make u indulge in one’s misery and can use on those feelings. I used to listen to hard gangster music in order to feel aggressive and use on those feelings the mind is crazy thing. But good luck everyone and thanks for the vid man it’s really helped me.

    My mother died from her addiction and this conversation is so healing for me. Bless you for sharing and this kind of courageous vulnerability. You are helping so many people, more than you could ever realize or imagine. I have also found nature incredibly healing- it has helped me process through the last 4 years of anger and grief. Shamanism has also supported me in transmuting my feelings and thought patterns and helps me to further honor my relationship with the earth. Much gratitude xx

    The thought of being addicted to depression, that was deep and meaningful for me. I've thought about that before (and immediately dismissed it as ridiculous). I appreciate you saying that.
    I think for me part of it having spend so much of my life taking care of everyone else, always making sure other people are okay that I became addicted to THAT and depression. Tying feelings of being worthwhile to helping people and when i couldn't it triggered feelings of failure.

    You're a captivating speaker and this felt a lot shorter than 40 minutes for just that reason. Really appreciate the insight and there's 100% a couple of ideas in here I haven't come across before! It's always refreshing to hear people authentically express themselves, it serves as an example I can aspire to. This was a great video.

    Thanks for sharing all this. What i've learned from making major changes in my life that I wish I'd known earlier on - Try changing one thing - add one good habit, and wait until it becomes ingrained before changing anything else, there's no all or nothing. do things in steps. Also - changing your habits will be lonely and uncomfortable - cause your friend groups will change. You will feel left behind and lonely, but soon you realize that guarding the peace you've created is so important, and the people that either remain in your life or come into your life - you'll have amazing relationships with. Cause there's so much more respect.

    When i cleaned out the toxins holding me back i went through a phase of grief. Lots of grief for everything i lost, the time wasted, the people who were meant to be ride or die suddenly couldn't tolerate the healthier version of me. I started from scratch at 31. But i got to build myself from scratch the way i wanted to be. It sucked for a good while, but then I found better replacements for the crap i left behind. Now, I've got an upgraded life! I love who I am, and my life.

    when i was 22 i got arrested for "stealing" firewood from a camp store. the friend i was with had a warrant for his arrest for some gnarly drug stuff, so really i was just caught up in the wrong crowd. i was also lucky to have a good lawyer myself and wasn't convicted and only spent a few hours in jail. nonetheless it scared the shit out of me, and i really made a point to fix my life after that. went back to school and all that. i'm still working on the sobriety thing, mostly just sip on beers and puff on stogies these days, but seeing your content on this topic has really pushed me towards taking the path to get completely clean.
    really excited to see where you go with this channel man, would love to see some of the great sights out there in Ireland while you give us your wisdom (was very close to getting a PhD position at Trinity this year... but it didn't work out. sadge.) cheers!

    4 weeks into not smoking weed. It happened after I fell into a lot of anxiety over some life changes. It's the longest I've gone without after 15+ years of a daily habit. It was less of a conscious decision and more of something in me is rebelling against doing it anymore. Life seems grey at the moment but I've learned a lot about myself in the last few years, so I'm learning to support myself in a way I've never done so before. Would love to hear more about your struggle with weed dependency.

      I am a chronic weed smoker and the past few months I feel a lot less compelled to smoke because I added some great habits to my day. Exercise is the biggest. Breathwork is also my new high (getting high on my own supply). Be gentle with yourself. ❤

      Honestly going to the gym is a real good way to help you stay off at least it did for me, because you try to get healthy in the gym and smoking brings it back down. Like he said the bad habit brings down the good habit

    I found that when i started climbing, i started eating a lot better to fuel the thing that i love. When im on the wall all the problems i might have in my life fade away when im on the wall. All youre thinking about is the next move and the experience

    It's not the same at all but I quit Christianity seven years ago when I was 17 and I had a very similar journey with the kind of person I was and the ways of thinking about my life were so negative back then. What really inspired me initially at the time was Knowing Better's video on "Hitting Rock Bottom". I realized at the time that as it currently stands I had nothing in my life that worked. All my coping mechanisms and people that surrounded me aren't actually gonna help me enjoy living life, and I had to rebuild from scratch. Which, sounds daunting, but it was actually super relieving. It meant that there was a better way that I could live my life and all I needed to do was find the things that worked for me. It was a beautiful realization. "Even if this new loadout ain't work, the next one might"
    In the past 3 or so years I've found out that I am queer in most ways and I've learned to fill these voids in your emotional and physical needs with healthy habits. For me, that's been cooking, gonfu tea (it's so sick, look Wu mountain tea's masterclass on tea) and learning(in general). I've always been a person in love with nature and a couple days ago I got a travel tea set that's super light and compact and I'm planning on going out to a mountain that I love in a week or two! So, thanks so much for putting your philosophy out there and, I'm so proud of you for digging yourself out

      (also theramin trees's videos on religion were really eye opening early on. I remember. Watching them while I was 15 and feeling guilty that I agreed with them. But they just planted a seed that what I was taught was bad for me, his videos are unreasonably good.)

    I wondered if this video was worth 40 minutes of my time (it was). Thank you, Caoilté. I just wanted the bullet points, as I've never heard of this guy. The 'chapter-ization' helped, and you can watch it in installments. I've never had a problem with addiction*, but have been down on myself and want to work on various poor habits. Bottom line: it's worth it!
    Might see you knocking around ze woods.
    *(I mentioned this not to imply I'm better than others. I understand that addiction doesn't happen over night. It's like the way you don't notice yourself growing day-to-day as a child. It creeps up. You don't become 'suddenly addicted' one day, like you don't become 'suddenly all better' one day. The daily work aspect scares ppl. My point is this video can apply to anyone who wants to take an unflinching look in the mirror and live a more meaningful, heart-centred life).

    It's interesting to see how you could have such a transition in such a short space of time, what I found is giving up things you're addicted to leaves a void in your life and doesn't always make a person happier but I suppose taking up something else instead like exercise helps, if you don't change things in your life after giving up stuff then nothing really changes I suppose

    I have addicted friends in college, especially friends that use drugs and vape even during the class time. They just cant enjoy the lecture because they are addicted. For example, some of they need to go out of class to smoke cigarrets/vape/weed. So, i found my love for History and i have a dream: be a history teacher and maybe an academic student. To me, it feels like, if i use this kind of drugs, like weed or alcohool, it will destroy my dream and my mind dont will be good anymore to study. Of course, theres the good things like it is a social drug, as you said, but it feels like i have my dream and my passion and i dont want to use any drugs. So, the true it is that u have to do something you love, follow your passion and the way can be much easier

    Smoking was a hard thing to give up but vaping was worse. I didn’t find it very hard to not take drugs and drink but giving up disposables gave panic attacks and even now 6 months in I think about it most days
